“Most enjoyable stay”
Reviewed 12 August 2014

We stayed here for three nights during the Commonwealth Games as we did not want to stay in Glasgow for that length of time. Extra tickets after we booked meant we spent less time at the hotel than originally planned and only meant we had one dinner at the hotel. This was an excellent meal looking out to Loch Long and finished off nicely with coffee in the beautiful main lounge. Service throughout was superb with none of that stuffiness that sometimes comes with country hotels and a refreshingly personal approach to guest wellbeing.
Having a drink on the front terrace when the sun shines after a day out in the countryside is a welcome bonus.
Room was the comfortable option, looked out over the Loch, had all that was needed for that length of stay and the Tunnocks tea cakes and fresh coffee went down well on getting back late from the Games.
The staff and owners were always friendly and happy and helped make the stay enjoyable.
We had a different breakfast every day from the menu which was a nice variation. Perhaps a little more self serve for juice and a larger coffee jug might save having to ask for more (though refills were always provided quickly).
Having quickly looked at some recent negative comments, some of these contributors seem to be blaming the hotel for their own lack of research etc. Bear this in mind when reading these.

Room Tip: A loch view is worth it.

I needed a place to stay for a night on a business trip in the area, but as my normal £50 per night B&B overlooking Garelochhead was full, I used Booking.com to find a substitute. I paid £100, but on arrival was told that that did not include breakfast. The website said "1 room left" and I was shown to it, No.5. This room, uniquely in my many years of travelling, has a window, which is almost entirely frosted to let in light, presumably. Through gaps in the patterning you can see tantalising glimpses of wheelie bins; is that a fire escape? We all know sometimes you will have a car park or service yard to gaze upon, but this arrangement is distinctly odd, and not worth the money when you add that the room has the tiniest of single beds (barely wider than my shoulders) and no mobile phone signal (O2). I left without having breakfast at an additional £12.50. I did not sleep well and faced a long day feely distinctly jaded. Sorry Knockderry, but you can easily find views and accommodation in the local area that far exceed your offering on this particular occasion at a fraction of the price. Suggestion: use this room as an office, or get rid of the frosted glass and improve the vista (window boxes) or drop the price considerably, then the old adage would reasonably apply, 'you get what you pay for'. Receptionist on both check in and out were charming. Sorry, but won't be staying again and playing the room lottery game.

Room Tip: Not Room 5!

Dear Navy8tor,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your stay at Knockderry Country House Hotel.

I am sorry you did not fully enjoy you stay, however, I would like to clarify on a few points you have made. On booking.com it does state that breakfast is an extra charge and that we have different room types. Room 5 is one of our traditional rooms which is situated in the centre of the hotel and does not have a loch view like some of our other rooms. It does have a traditional style frosted window as we feel our guests do not want to look at bins and such like, but it still does let the light in. Also, phone signal does vary depending on your network, but unfortunately being situated in the country this is somewhat out of our control. There are phones in all the rooms which guests can make outside calls from and if you had alerted staff that you were having difficulty with a signal they could have pointed you to the best place to receive one.

Kind Regards,

Linsey

3 Night stay, in which from start to finish was most warm, hospitable, sincere and customer focused. All front of house team were most obliging and any request was of no trouble ( especially freezing the locally bought kippers from loch fyne).
Evening meal was excellent with fresh and varied produce evident with a extensive wine list to accompany the quality food.
Stayed in room 4, which we would recommend, four poster ensuite room with beautiful views over the front lawns which sweep down to the Loch.
Beth and Murdo (owners) have created a fantastic friendly team approach Country House Hotel, offering a warm and refined stay. Strongly recommended.

We visited at the end if July for our anniversary and stayed in the Library Suite at the top of the hotel. It was beautifully furnished with amazing views, helped by the fact that the weather was glorious during our visit.
Enjoyed sitting outside for a drink before our evening meal on a sultry evening with no midges!
The food was delicious as always and the service faultless. A wee bit different this time as the dining room had been moved into the large room with the bar. I love the fact that they're always trying out new things.
Breakfast was great too. I had the egg Benedict and my husband had the full Scottish. Clean plates all round and we were set up for the day. Didn't need anything else to eat until dinner.
Beth and Murdo have transformed this hotel over the last 12 years and they continue to make improvements. Every room we have stayed in has been impeccably and tastefully furnished.
We go regularly, usually about 4 times a year and are never disappointed!

Room Tip: The rooms at the front of the hotel have views across Loch Long.

My wife and I had an incredibly comfortable stay for two nights in Room 4. Beth, the proprietor, and her staff were friendly, attentive and very accommodating. Our room was large and located in the main house. The restaurant was excellent. After trying it our first night, we decided to keep life simple and eat there for our second night. As other reviews have noted, the hotel is outside a tiny village (on a single track, lochisde road) on a peninsula. We loved the remoteness of this location (fear not, the industrial activity you see on the drive in is on a differnt loch entirely) and the hotel and the grounds are comfortable, so we felt it was a great place to relax. Tarbit is a 35 minute drive where you can cruise Loch Lomond, rent bikes and tie into the trails in the Trossachs Park. Beth was extremely helpful with that as well. The staff also were extemely attentive to my wife's celiac condition. Breakfast, dinner and even a take-away lunch one day were all great and reliably gluten free. What really made the visit special, however, was the chef taking on the challenge to produce a gluten free birthday cake for my wife (after I called ahead). She was extremely gratified - a wonderful birthday.

Less than a hours leisurely drive from Glasgow City centre, probably 40 mins from the airport, we went via Loch Lomond. Arrived at the hotel slightly early than planned, but the friendly staff sorted our bags and showed us to Room 1 which was beautiful and overlooked Loch Long, the shoreline is accessible directly across from the hotel. Lovely bathroom with a view of the next door neighbours castle walls. Lunch was delicious. Dining room is oak panelled and overlooks the Loch towards a dramatic backdrop of wild mountains. Nice lounge and siting rooms decorated to a good tasteful standard. Small book and DVD library free to guests. Our evening meals from the fine dining menu was most excellent using fresh local produce ; we ate out only once during our three day stay only when we went off exploring into the mountains. Sumptuous breakfasts; my favourite was the smoked local haddock. Of note the young waitress staff were very polite, clean and smartly dressed. Friendly house maids. The young waiter Nacho was very helpful and ensured every whim including minor changes or additions to our food choice was requested from the chef- who always surpasses our requests. Good wine menu and of course a selection of whisky ! The owners Beth and Murdo were very nice and found time to make all guests including ourselves welcome. We have already recommended this hotel to family, and will likely go there again. Three days well spent; flying time from Glasgow to East Midlands less than an hour !

Stayed here for a couple of nights recently and have stayed before - food always absolutely excellent at breakfast and dinner. Good wine list; staff very helpful and approachable; rooms very comfortable with DVD player - the hotel has a library of films to watch in your room; adequate parking; great lochside views with a beautiful countryside silence to enjoy. A fine old country house with classical interiors and wifi. We are going back if it's not fully booked!
