“la Dolce Vita on a budget”

We stayed in this medieval era village for a month as our sabbatical, as a base for touring italy, and for our mental health. This is not your 5 star hotel with great restaurants. It is authentic Italian living in a non- touristy village where time has stopped. Enjoy the sweet life, festivals to celebrate wine, donkeys, olive oil, St whoever, or just being Italian, and feel how real Italian life feels. The owners, Mario and Lexi, offer customer service to the nines, but you will not see them often. They live and work in Rome and come north during the summer. Lexi is American but has lived in Rome about 16 years.

From Roccalvecce, it is driving distance to most of the Tuscany hill towns, Florence, Orvieto, and Assissi. Rome is a 1 1/2 train ride so one day trips are easy. Venice is 5 hours but worth the drive thru beautiful Tuscany and Umbria. Civita di Bagnoregio is 10 minutes away and is an awesome sight.

At night, all the surrounding hill towns light up with flood lights making incredible views. Give up your selfish expectations and come enjoy real life.

i cannot recommend the Hilltop Village Home enough. The owner, Lexi, is one third American, one third Italian and one third Angel. Her hospitality was second to none and had to be seen to be believed. The property itself was ideal with a huge living/dining/kitchen area and a large double bedroom upstairs with en suite toilet. It was fully equipped and had many extras we fully thought that we would have to provide, given that we were self catering. The village itself is medieval and picture postcard stuff with very friendly inhabitants... try the local bar for a quiet drink before bed. The area abounds with great site seeing all within easy reach [by car] and there is plenty to do and see. Free car parking at the house. If you are looking for a "chilled out" holiday then this is the place for you. There is the opportunity to increase the number of occupants to 4 by utilising 2 single beds in the downstairs area.

Liked best: Hospitality shown by owner and stunning scenery from village.
Liked least: Nothing really, but be aware that stairs to bedroom are rather narrow if you are not completely mobile.
