“chilled out and friendly”
Reviewed 4 February 2014

I stayed in the cheapest cottage type c which had double bed and bathroom. The shower was working great. Not a bad bathroom for a wooden cottage. If you are a light sleeper you need earplugs. The crows, dogs, cockerls and monkeys are awake at 4am. Staff are friendly and attentive. The spa is great and 5 mins from the beach

Room Tip: A basic cottage is fine if you are a budget backpacker. Splash out on something more expensive if yo...

no reservation in advance seemed possible by internet, I trusted on getting there and see for myself. First I was in The Gate House, less expensiv but a hard bed.Than The River Edye, good view, good matress, good airing, clean, big enough for one. All Rooms have ventilators, and Moskitonets. Mr Harry , at the Gate to the beach is a nice help, with a fatherly politeness. In the night a securityguard is helpfull to keep away some disturbing dogs. The Restaurant is not expensiv, has good food and is the best airiest place in palolem to be around noon, because of the winds from the eastern hills. You can even experience monkeys changing trees, manymany eagles in the sky above the water and a nice pending stone on a granite boulder.

Room Tip: on the waterfront you have a better airconditioning and view, more sounds of nature

First impressions.
Not having visited an eco-resort and stayed in a beach shack in India before, I had no idea what to expect. First impressions were exactly as they stayed, a beautiful, cosy and relaxing environment with helpful welcoming staff. The huts are close together, each with their own outside area, although with the layout, didn’t feel particularly close together. The entire site has tree cover, allowing only cooling dappled sunlight through with hammock table and chairs outside each hut.

The Hut.
The facilities in the shack are pretty good for a hut. A ceiling fan, two electricity plugs in the main part of the shack and one each on the veranda and in the bathroom. Inside, the furniture is sparse with a bed, mosquito net, set of shelves, a mirror and one stool. The bathroom had a flushing toilet, sink with a cold tap and a heated shower.

Facilities
When you need to get the room cleaned, bedding refreshed, more toilet paper or clean towels you just need to request this at reception.

A safety deposit box is available free of charge from reception. You may need to bring your own 1 cm sized padlock or buy one locally as they didn't always have padlocks available.

Free Wi-fi is available throughout the site.

There are plenty of activities available on-site including yoga, massage and traditional Indian cookery classes.

There is a bar and restaurant on site which provides very good food and drink in a beautiful and chilled out surrounding.

Setting
The shacks are dotted around the site. Some are by the tidal river, these have a little more privacy although all the shacks have their own small outside space. At night you can hear every going-on outside as the shacks are akin to tents or caravans. The walls have small gaps in them and are made of thin wood, so you can hear all manner of wildlife like the or the dawn chorus of different birds.

Mosquito’s could potentially be a problem, but were a non-event really. The site was fumigated some evenings and as the huts have power, you can plug in a mosquito repellent overnight. Some people burn the coils. We just made sure we wore some spray each evening and never had any problems. The beds are covered in a mosquito net as well.

Nearby
Dreamcatcher is 50 meters from the beach. There is a small shop immediately as you arrive at the beach. Otherwise, it’s a 10 minute walk from the main entrance to the local shops. The same shops are accessible with a 10 minute walk down the beach.

There over 40 beach side shacks serve great food all along the Palolem beach.

Beach walk.
Patnum beach is a 25 minute walk heading south down Palolem beach. A Tuc-tuc will take you for 80R. At the south end of Palolem beach follow the footpath which passes the restaurant that’s up on the rocks. Follow the path down the other side through a tiny beach and a few more shacks. From there, follow the coast for 10 minutes and the next beach you arrive at is Patnum.

Patnum is split into two parts. The first is less busy than Palolem and takes about ten minutes to walk, then there are some rocks, which you’ll need to paddle around if it’s high tide, then you’ll arrive at the second part of the beach. This end of Patnum beach is much quieter. Walk to the far end, another ten minutes and you’ll find a river. There’s usually a man with a small boat who charges Rs.50 per person to cross a river. Then you can walk another 10 minutes long turtle beach which is a quite, beautiful and besides for two beach shacks, is almost deserted.

Location was great, safe, peaceful, relaxed, staff was a little better then average, although, were attentive when approached. Price was a little high, but this is thanks to Europeans and Brits flooding the place. Hey good for them, no hard feelings. Overall, recommend to stay here and enjoy a beautiful beach. Also, the spa massage was excellent, I was really worked over, a few days later, my muscles were so much less achy and painful. Very greatful for the experience!

Beach side shacks, clean rooms, great resturant. I loved the river side resturant which served good food and great views. The hotel is few meters inside with Palolem beach is just minutes away by walk, this makes it a quite and silent place at night.
