The ruin is fascinating, the sight is amazing. The remarkable thing is the walk up and down the bush: half an hour, more or less, to reach the castle and just a little more if you want to reach the top of the hill in front of it, to enjoy the amazing view of the castle from the other side. Many legends were told about this castle, one of them was connected to the Abbey of San Liberatore. Here, you can live the legend breathing the air on the top, or you can simply enjoy the privilege of this historical location for an overal view of this mystic land.

We could see this castle from where we were staying and had to go and see it even though it was a hot day! it was worth the effort. The views were AMAZING! It is deserted and ruined but the historical links can be researched.

Viewed as simply a ruined castle, even though the walk up from the road is as pretty as they come and the views from the top will take your breathe away, there are other castles in Abruzzo far more spectacular. Taken as a whole however, as part of a day of exploring Serramonacesca and these beautiful and aloof foothills of the Majella, the Castel is a treat indeed - a wonderful place to pause and take in the scenery and the sense of history before continuing on your way.

If you have no reason to visit Castel Menardo then the hard climb is worth the effort for the view. It will take you half an hour to walk to the top from Serramonacesca village and when you leave the road, the footpath follows a steep valley. You get glimpses of the castle, through breaks in the trees and you wonder how much harder the climb is going to get. The path is marked by a rickety fence that is in desperate need of repair. About a third of the way up a naturally spring trickles from a rockface and it was welcome refreshment to wetl my head and soak my cap which kept me cool for the remainder of the ascent. The path crosses the valley via an ancient stone bridge and the climb begins to get steeper and there are flights of uneven steps. When you approach the walls of the fort, you wonder how did they get the rock and materials up to this lofty peak to build such a large structure. As you skirt the outer walls the view is laid before you from the coast at Pescara 20 miles away the vista sweeps around to the peaks of the Grand Sasso with the terracotta rooftops of Serramonacesca way below. Inside the castle walls there is little to see but loopholes and the evidence of postholes a cellar and holes for floor joists. There are no information boards in English so insight to the purpose or history of the fort is not possible and therefore disapointing. Like I said the effort is worth it for the view and you are likely to be completely alone.
