Wanted to stay at a MN resort that had things to do. Many of our trips are to larger cities where we may go to zoos, children museums, historic landmarks, aquariums, amusement parks, etc. This time we tried a relaxing trip... and it was a great time. The staff/service was excellent at the front desk, maids, restaurants, boat rental, etc. Very friendly people. There was lots to do -- several paddle boats, bicycle boats, kayaks, canoes - to use for free -- there were pontoon boats to rent and tubes to rent. Lots of beaches, indoor pools, outdoor pools, planned activities (bingo, movie night, campfire and smores, free pontoon rides, etc), tennis, lawn bowling... many things to do. The resort is so large that just strolling around the place is something to do. Our room was in the Sunset Villas -- just a larger size typical hotel room with 2 Q's, table and chairs, another chair, etc. The room was okay - kind of updated... not brand new but the place was clean - the bedding was the white sheet/white comforter style typical of the newer Courtyard by Marriott. There are so many rooms and cabins at this resort -- that if a brand new style room is manditory to you (which is almost always what I prefer) - I am sure that is possible at Maddens. The best things about the room was the (1) location and the (2) view. The location was great for us -- right on the beach so we were close to take the kids to make sand castles -- and could sit on the balcony and watch them play too -- we could walk north down the beach to the other swimming area with the water trampoline etc -- and we were super close to the boat rental place (we used all the types of water craft they offered - it was free) . The view was great for the sunrise and just having a deck/balcony to the lake. Did not golf (had young kids with). The pools are basic - no water parks -- but if we wanted water parks, we would have gone to the Wis Dells. The resort grounds had nice landscaping. Had art store, ice cream store, general store, gift shop, etc. Brainerd has several restaurants (mcd's, famous daves, culvers, kfc, bonanza, etc) and stores (target, walmart, fleet farm, menards). Restaurant at Madden's was good - we tried the Pizza place -- but never got to the other Madden's restaurants this time. We tried the Italian Garden at the Grand View Lodge -- that was very good -- but a little spendy.
