Tenuta Barco di Emera
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 28 May 2013

A friend and I returned yesterday from a girl's trip (also with my 8 month old son) long weekend in the south of Italy. She really enjoyed the primitivo variety of wine, and had arranged for us to attend two wine tastings in Manduria on our second day of the trip... Tenuta del Barco showed up as a unique, inexpensive place to stay that was relatively close to the town of Manduria.

As far as agriturismos go, this was the most affordable that I have stayed at during my year and a half living in Italy. There are two types of rooms that are offered-- the rustic "cabins" (small duplex-style cabins without a kitchenette), or the more conventional rooms that do come with a kitchenette.

The staff was incredibly friendly (some spoke English), the food was amazing (we had two dinners there, as well as breakfast every morning... breakfast was your traditional Italian fare of meats, cheeses, fruit, and baked goods and was included in the price of the room). There was never any pressure to buy any of their wine, but there were four or five varieties grown and produced in the region (6-12 euro per bottle) that you could drink or purchase to take home.

I would definitely return, and highly recommend this site to anyone heading to the south eastern portion of Italy.

We've really enjoyed the stay in the historic residence room. I should now what you’ll get during the stay - it’s filing of country side of Italy. The room was great and large. You don’t the phone and TV in the room but we don’t need them because we heard the sings of birds every morning. Fresh air, excellent home cuisine, excellent local vine, friendly staff. My small sun said: “Father, it’s not the hotel – it’s a castle!». Some facts: the farm is located at least 2 km. away from the sea; it’s not easy to find it – use Google map before and print the agenda; sometimes noisy because the guest in the restaurant; wi-fi internet is very expensive (12 euro per day); renting the car is a must. Use the internet to find the better rate than on official site.

This place was much more "rustic" than we expected. No phone, no television, spartan furnishings were ok, but no hot water and no drinking water were too much. 150 Euros a night is a lot to spend to brush your teeth with (expensive) bottled water. Rather than being "a few hundred meters" from the beach as the website claims, the beach it actually more than 2 kms away. The address in Marina di Pulsano is deceptive. The restaurant was fine, although dinner there was the most expensive meal we had in a week in Puglia. The real scam is that the hotel makes you pre-pay for the entire stay (50% at time of booking and 50% 30 days before arrival). There is NO possibility of getting your money back if you do not like it. In the end we decided to leave after one night and throw away about 600 Euros rather than ruin our vacation. Consider carefully whether you want to take a risk before you book at this place.
