On our arrival we were welcomed at reception and given instructions for entry etc. After seeing the room ( No 6 ) we were very impressed as the room was quite large and clean. Although we only stayed the one night we had a nice meal while our grandson played in the safe play area at the rear. Nice setting opposite the river and overall an nice experience.

We are big fans of Marston Inns and the Unicorn doesn't disappoint. It is located very close to the River Trent in a very picturesque and tranquil setting.
The pub itself has lots of character and is a pleasant place to have a meal and a drink. There seems to be lots of indoor and outdoor seating although its popularity means that it is rather busy at weekends. We arrived on a sunny and busy Sunday afternoon and the car park was near capacity. The individual car spaces were generous so there was little concerns about parking. Despite being busy we were very quickly and smoothly booked into our room and given all the relevant information regarding breakfast etc.
There is more outdoor seating at the rear than at the front which is a little unfortunate given the great views to the front.
The food choice is very good and the quality is high. We had several meals here and enjoyed each one. The prices were very reasonable for the quantity served.
In view of previous negative Tripadvisor reviews we made a point of watching the bar and restaurant staff in action. I'm happy to say we had absolutely no problem at all with the service which was always polite, professional and very friendly.
We stayed in Room 12 which overlooks the river. The room was not particularly large but more than adequate for our purposes. It was very clean and had a very comfortable quality bed and bedding with duck down pillows although the towels were a little thin. There was a desk with two chairs, a double wardrobe and bedside cabinets with individual lights. The flat screen TV worked well. Ample tea, coffee, biscuits and bottles of water were provided each day. The bathroom had a good-sized shower cubicle with a powerful shower on a hose. Dove soap dispensers were provided.and the room had ample lighting without a window.
Breakfast was the standard Marston fayre, with a good selection of fruit, fruit juices, yogurt and cereals as well as toast and hot English breakfast. Very Tasty!
There is a selection of Cafes and other pubs/restaurants within easy flat walking distance and a pleasant riverside walk. There is an interesting lock/weir complex heading left out of the pub. You can also take a reasonably priced river cruise from immediately opposite the pub.
In summary if you stay here you will find the service friendly, the room clean and comfortable, the food tasty, the beer cold and the surroundings very pleasant. We are already considering when to stay again and are recommending it to friends and family.

Went out for afternoon lunch with a couple of girl friends as it was a lovely day and the location of the hotel is gorgeous, right near the river where you can go on boat rides however that's not the issue have with the hotel, it's the service and food. When we arrived we ordered drinks and received them quickly, we then went to sit down inside and looked at the menu, and as we had never been before we went to the bar to order food to be told that a waiter/waitress would come and take our order. Once back at our seats we waited 20 minutes until our order was finally taken. The food came out about 15 minutes after ordering which was good however two of us ordered steak, a rump steak medium/well done and sirloin steak medium were mixed up and done the other way round, we complained to the waitress and she was quick to take them back to the kitchen to change and as she was not the one who took our ordered she asked how it should be done. The waitress who originally took the order came and asked what was the problem, we explained and not once did she apologise for her mistake and asked if there was anything she could do, to me that is disgusting service to not even apologise for her mistaken as we are paying for a service! Once the new steaks came out 15 minutes later, the supervisor/manager brought the food out neither did he apologise for the mistake or ask if there anything else we needed. Didn't feel very looked after as a customer so goodness knows what the hotel service would be like and to be fair I wouldn't like to know! Overall it's poor service and a poor lack of communication within staff. Wouldn't go there for food again although three out of five meals were nice, the service was a complete let down and ruined what is a lovely location to have a drink!

Wanted a walk along the River Trent on a hot July day, with our small dog. Decided to visit the Unicorn for a mid day meal, but found that dogs were not allowed in any part of the bar. We were directed to an area at the rear - with some picnic tables (no umbrellas) adjacent to the dusty car park.

This is a riverside pub in an area popular with dog walkers and families. Not exactly the most "exclusive" of places, so it is surprising that they are unable to make better provision for the likes of us.

Took our trade to a café / bar just a few minutes walk down the riverside walk and adjacent to the locks, where we had an excellent meal in clean and pleasant surroundings under a covered patio and with our four legged friend under the table.

Bearing in mind its location, this place needs a more enlightened attitude towards daytime visitors - though we could accept the restriction in any part that might be deemed a restaurant, if there is one.

Having drank in the unicorn for many years but never stayed here we decided to stay due to a family party.Booked family room but childrens beds like sleeping on mattresses on the floor, large room, limited tea and coffee.Shower head loose and will flood bathroom. when asking for late night drink told bar shuts at 1030 and there won't be a till, does not matter whether you are a resident or not.staff rude and service very slow.Would not recommend breakfast. Not value for money, shame because location is excellent. would be nice if it could get back to how it was ten years ago, friendly staff, good decor and excellent service.Until then not in a hurry to stay but might have a drink if staff speedup AND SMILE.

Room Tip: go 4 high level with river view try room 8

Eaten here on quite a few occasions. Food is typical "pub grub" type fayre but of a high and consistent standard. Recent menu change is a good move and that coupled with a well priced wine list makes it a good place to eat. Table service is always good although bar service can be slow.

We stayed here when we attended a friend's wedding reception. It was very good value for money and the room was clean and comfortable. One criticism would be the use of UHT milk, you accept it in the room but a jug of it at breakfast? Yuk. Other than that, for £62.50 BB, smashing.
