Everything about Mabula is pretty much 3 star. The food at the breakfast buffet and at the evening bomba is pretty average.
We stayed at the Sunset Hill timeshare unit which was nice enough but getting pretty dated now. the rustic atmosphere of the place is good as well.
The most disappointing part is that there are insufficient game drives during the midweek period. Couple this with the fact that you cannot either drive or walk around the reserve on your own, means that all that is left to do is to swim. If you don't enjoy swimming (or during foul weather) you are pretty much a prisoner in your own chalet with nothing to do...

Safari game is really a game, they do not show the animal one at a time. You will see lions if you are lucky, rhinos, hippos, lot of impalas, zebras and buffaloes. Another trip will be for elephants and giraffes. There is nothing much to do in reserve. Maybe you can swim. Rooms and showers are clean and there is a nice ambiance in it.

Mabula is a gem not far north of Pretoria. The pool and pool bar is excellent and their are lots of other activities on offer apart from the game viewing. The Staff are excellent, Lizzy in particular is great and really looked after us. The game drives are stunning and the terrain is really varied. You can head up to the top of the mountain for a sun downer with a nice cold beer.
Mabula is far enough away from the bright lights of Pretoria and Sun City to give you a "real Africa" feel, but not so far that it would hamper a short 2 night stay.

Stayed here with a group and was so very disappointed. The morning game drives take you to a sealed part of the reserve to find the 7 tigers they have all of which are tagged and monitored. They were already sound asleep in the grass yet we spent the next hour circling around again and again as only two of the many vehicles could stop at a time, to see if they had moved at all which they had not. In the afternoon the big find is the elephants so when one jeep found them they radioed around and we spent another hour waiting at a distance for our turn to drive up and take a picture.
Add to this the fact that the food was awful. We were promised an outdoor BBQ but despite the beautiful weather that never happened and we were forced time and again to have the luke warm, dried out buffet items in the unairconditioned restaurant.
Deficiencies in the room including lack of air conditioning where also never looked into despite being reported early.
Will definately not be back.

Good Day,

I take this opportunity to thank you most sincerely for your feedback. I have noted all the points raised and have discussed them with the various departments as this is definitely not the standard we pride ourselves in or are renowned for. The fact that no Boma Dinner took place during your stay is disturbing and this too has been raised with our Executive Chef.

The minute we got there I was gripped by the rustic beauty of the lodge. It is a great place to visit for some peace and quiet, and the food that we had was really good. There are even warthogs and small deer (can't remember the name of the species) roaming freely at the lodge.

The room we stayed in is cosy and comfortable, but my biggest gripe was the painting work that was being done to our row of huts. The smell of paint was really strong, especially in the bathroom. It was also really awkward when I went to the bathroom to use the toilet, only to see a figure of a man at the window. I figured that if I could see him, he could see the inside as well so I had to hold it in till he left. I thought it was ridiculous to let the workers do painting work on huts that have people staying in them. It ruined part of my experience.

We took an evening game drive and an early morning one; while the latter was a bit disappointing because we hardly saw any animals, the former one was brilliant. We managed to spot giraffes, zebras, buffalo, hippos, rhinos, etc. That being said, our ranger was not engaging at all. He kept quiet throughout most of the ride, only pointing out animals when he saw them without providing any information about them unless you asked. But some other groups said their rangers were informative and made the drive so much fun, a vast contrast from our experience with our ranger. Nevertheless, the view at the private game reserve is breathtakingly beautiful, and the drive is pleasant enough even if there aren't animals to be seen.

My mother turned 60 and our whole family stayed at Mabula Game Lodge at one of their Bush Camps. Spacious chalets with a main kitchen and braai-area for all! See the rhinos, buffalo's, giraffes and a lot of other species from your camp. Game drives were wonderful!! Very good service as well!! PS DO NOT FEED THE ANIMALS AND TREAT THEM ALSO LIKE WILD ANIMALS! My uncle got hurt while passing a warthog on his way to the swimming pool and they wanted food that is why they are there! But overall - Will definitely go again!! :)

What a truly special South African experience. Had heard so much about the resort, but had never been there before. The units are large and well appointed. Views of sunset (and sunrise) on surrounding koppies is spectacular. Children loved seeing buck close-up, at our unit. The entertainment area and pools are also lovely. Having heated pools made the experience 'summery', even though it was the end of winter. Kids swam every day!

The game drives were also excellent. Did night-drive, lion drive and general morning game drive. (Nice to know that there was no additional cost for drives.) Was reassured to see so many rhino. kids loved seeing wild animals so close.

Oh, and make sure you attend the Monday eve braai with huge bonfire and the Wednesday Reptile show. Very educational. Kids loved it.

We had a great time and I have already booked our next holiday in April.

Room Tip: Unit 16, Madjadji is probably best. Closest to the pools and recreation area.
