“quaint mountain experience but not convenient to activities”
Reviewed 14 May 2012

We were looking for a quaint, traditional experience in the mountains of South Korea - close enough to the National Park for us to trek into Jirisan and see some of the great mountains we'd read about.

Lack of English information on pensions or traditional inns in the area made it extremely difficult to find a lodging option that wasn't a crazy Korean SpaWorld, CastleWorld resort, or the like. So we took a chance on this one listed on the Tourism Board's website.

The pension itself is what you get for a pension - very bare bones. There is heat, TV, kitchen, but the bathroom is shared (not a problem since we were the only ones there at the time), and all you get is comforters on the floor for beds. Keep in mind - we wanted the traditional so we were up for sleeping on the floor.

It was just us and the owner of this 4 room Inn. Mr Jin was incredibly sweet and accommodating. We hired his car for the 2 days we were there, and he served as both driver and guide.

You will certainly get traditional here - Mr Jin's home also has a cellar for preserving bean paste - and jars of it line the backyard. There is a shared kitchen (with the Inn, not his house) where Mr Jin serves a very light breakfast but no other meals.

The bare bones of the pension would have been fine if we'd truly been in close distance to town or mountains/sights. The pension itself, however, is in the mountains but not truly remote or nestled into beautiful scenery. You are still in a neighborhood where there are roads, power lines, and neighbors. Albeit, you do wake to a beautiful mountain view and gorgeous clean blue skies.

You will need a car to get to any of the mountain sights. And many are 1-2 hour drives. there is a bus system, but wasn't highly recommended for convenience.

Stay here if you have friends, bring food and drink and want to bunker down playing cards for the trip. Not for comfort.
