“The "Gold Standard" of Holiday Rentals”

Over many years of travelling in Europe our preferred style of accomodation is two bedroom, self catering which we usually take for a week so that we can explore an area then move on. Occasionally we stay for two weeks. Over the years we would have stayed at 30 or 40 such places in Italy, France and America. We have a check list of essential features and over the years rarely have we been disappointed although of course some are better than others.

This one is one of, if not the best we have stayed at. A great base to explore Basilicata and Puglia, a house with real character, everything you could possibly want for a comfortable stay, breath-taking views, secure, free parking and attentive and helpful owners.

You won't find better than this.

There is literally nothing about this house that could be improved: its location; the quality of its interior, fixtures, fittings, and equipment; its views, its outdoor terrace and balconies; the helpfulness of both the owner and of the local people who help guests.
And Irsina itself is an 'undiscovered gem'.
I would only add that the photos both of the interior and the views do not do them justice.

“Amazing house, fantastic view”

The house is absolutely beautiful, with high ceilings helping to keep the rooms cool. The furnishings are lovely. Sit in the Queen Anne chair and enjoy the magnificent view with a coffee or glass of wine, if the weather is not quite right for sitting on the balcony. As the house looks on to the countryside it is extremely quiet and peaceful. Plenty of good quality linen and towels. The house was very clean.

The kitchen is fully equipped and enabled us to make ample use of the fantastically fresh produce from the local shops, try the Cardoncelli mushrooms, if they're available. We also made use of the roof terrace and BBQ.

Car parking was easy, in the Piazza 3 mins walk from the house. The old town is very interesting, the new town really just flats and shops. However, it was great for taking the regular evening passeggiata. The townspeople are very friendly and the shop keepers really want to show off their produce. We saw half a lamb hanging in the butchers window and were invited in to see it and the local speciality of involtini made from the liver and intestines - which are very tasty.

The weather was unkind to us for 6 days, so having Wi-fi helped but it also meant that we didn't get out to the local restaurants as much as we'd planned. Went to La Contessa, although the meal was nice we didn't want to rush back. We really liked the Caffe Ducale either just for a drink, a breakfast pastry or a fantastic pizza. It is family run and very friendly. The cakes at Pasticceria Lucana are delicious as is their ice cream, that was our Sunday treat!

Didn't particularly like Metaponto, it was very run down, although it was good to get to the sea. Matera is really interesting and despite being a World Heritage Site, wasn't terribly expensive.
The countryside in this particular part is dominated by wheat fields, further into Basilicata is greener.

We had a great holiday and would recommend this property. We only found a couple of English speakers, but this wasn't a problem for us as we speak Italian. However, I don't think it would be a problem for non-speakers as the shop keepers are so keen to sell that a little sign language and pointing will go a long way! Go and enjoy the delights of Irsina and Casa della Gioia!!

“A beautiful and very quiet location”

This spacious apartment is located in the walls of an old fortified town. It has wonderful views out of almost every window on to a vast agricultural panorama. The apartment is bright and airy with lots of space. It is located in a very quiet town about 45 minutes from Matera which is a UNESCO-listed town containing cave dwellings which were occupied until 1950. Irsina is an ideal place to stay if you want to get away from it all in a picturesque area with documented history going back to Neolithic times. It provides opportunities for hiking, good food and visits to museums and ancient ruins. Overall, the apartment was clean, but the oven and microwave left much to be desired.
