“One of THE best hotels ever!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 June 2012

I have just spent four nights and 5 days with my partner and another couple of friends at this wonderful hotel near Usk. The hotel is beautiful, and our rooms were wonderful: our friends' (32)had a queen-sized bed with overhanging canopy and ours (35) was a massive suite underneath the roof, with spectacular sloping ceilings and dark wooden beams. The split-level bathroom was very old-fashioned and stylish, again with sloping ceilings and a beautiful washstand. I've never loved a hotel room as much as the one here...For another reviewer to complain about creaking floorboards: it's hundreds of years old; what would you expect?!! We had a deal for dinner to be incuded in our stay. The menu was extensive, with several choices, and an unusually high vegetarian selection for myself. Our lovely server Kate was extremely knowledgeable and efficient, and they are very accommodating about specific diertary requirements. The spa and pool facilities were extremely good. The large pool was a little warmer than is usual, which suited me immeasurably! The sauna was top notch, and firing on all cylinders even on the mornings I went for an early swim.
None of us had been to south Wales before, and this was an ideal spot to explore places like Usk, Chepstow, Newport, Abergevenny, Merthyr Tydfil and Hay-on-Wye. The Brecon Mountain Railway is definitely a great afternoon out, and the Roman Amphitheatre at nearby Caerleon was truly spectacular.
To sum up: we couldn't fault this hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful, the food first-class and the rooms wonderful. The location is tranquil and scenic, and the prices reasonable.
Absolutely first-class and thoroughly recommended without any hesitation.

Booked this Hotel for an Anniversary get away for my wife and myself. On arrival the Reception girl was very nice but the room we were given was right above reception looking into the courtyard and was very small. The room itself was very dark and ALL the floorboards creaked. Just for our entertainment there was a wedding taking place at the same time. Just our luck that various Wedding Guests kept congregating under our window to talk and shout very loudly whilst smoking.
This went on for a while so we guessed it was liable to be happening all night. I went to Reception and they were apologetic and moved us to a better and quieter room,

We had dinner in the Hotel and it was not too bad. However they spoilt breakfast the next day by serving me a Hash Brown that you could build a house with it was so hard and some lovely microwaved scrambled egg that the chef was too lazy to make properly that was just a solid lump.

The Health Club is a featureless barn which lacks any ambience. The changing rooms were okay but the shower area had a rusty ceiling, a cracked sink and the cleaning left a lot to be desired. The pool area was in virtual darkness for some reason in complete contrast to the pictures on the website.

The website also did not show the bottles and large quantity of cigarette ends lying outside in front of Reception and that was when we arrived!!

Overall my summary is this:
The Staff are friendly
Do not get a room overlooking the courtyard.
Dinner is okay but nothing to shout home about
Do not expect a good breakfast as it is awful. An extra couple of minutes preparing it would have made all the difference.
The cleanliness leaves a lot to be desired.
The Health club has no ambience whatsoever.
If you want a lovely weekend away for two look elsewhere.

All in all a wasted weekend and WILL NOT be going back to this establishment again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the back and avoid the Annexe.

Our room (17) which was a junior suite was amazing. Dual aspect windows onto countryside. Expansive bathroom with separate loo. Contrary to previous reviews the food in the restaurant was delicious and definitely not overpriced. I noted you could eat in the bar if you prefer a cheaper option. However, I had the rack of lamb twice during our stay as it was so yummy.
Pool and jacuzzi were very good with luxurious changing room. Pool long enough to swim unlike some other hotels. The only slight niggles were that the tv reception is bad at times although BBC channels are good. The fire doors are a bit noisy when shutting. Lovely
rural setting away from the madding crowd!!! Would highly recommend

Room Tip: Room 17 is gorgeous with wonderful outlook

First impression was good, lovely old country house with mowed lawns and plenty of parking. We checked in at 3pm and there was a wedding reception on. We noticed the courtyard leading to the front entrance was littered with cigarette butts and ashtrays on tables were full. We had to go through smokers and clouds of cigarette smoke on the front entrance doorstep in order to get in to reception (no designated smoking area elsewhere?). Check in was quick & efficient.

Our room was ok but smelt stale and clearly someone had been smoking in the room. Windows were shut tight. The floor hadn't been vacuumed and was very unclean. Ledges were dusty in the room and bathroom. We mentioned the dirty floor as we left to visit friends at 3.30 pm. We returned late, about 12.30 a.m., to be welcomed by more smokers, loud and drunk, and a carpet of cigarette butts on the doorstep of the front entrance. The wedding reception was still going and there were wedding guests, loud and drunk, in the corridor outside our room when we got there. One 'dirty look' from us encouraged them to move on! Disappointingly our bedroom floor had not been vacuumed even though I had made the receptionist aware of the matter 9 hours earlier.

Breakfast was good but the waiter was a man of few words and even fewer smiles. None, in fact, and wanted to know what we wanted before we had even got to our table and looked at the breakfast menu. Keen to finish and get off, I thought. The waitress was bright & cheerful. There was an air of 'fallout' at the hotel after the late function the night before. I don't think this hotel has got it quite right with making sure that functions don't spoil the experience of other guests.

Won't go to Cwrt Bleddyn again.

So sorry about your room not being hoovered and I have asked Simon to look into this as a matter of urgency as this is inexcusable, particularly as you raised it with Reception.

Smokers are having a hard time [not that I am one] but I can assure you that no one smokes in our bedrooms, but unfortunately they dont always use the ashtrays provided nor move to less conspicuous areas outside. Apologies.

On average we have 3 wedding a week at Cwrt Bleddyn and it is incredible diificult to get everywhere immaculate during the few hours that the wedding part eventually go to bed and gurests come down. We do our best but it is a very very difficult task and the team at the hotel are to be applauded for the work they do. What we can get done in those few hours is dependant on 1. How bad it is 2. How long we have.

Sorry if we cant always get it back to how we would wish, as quickly as we would wish.

Kindest regards

David

Stayed in one of the annexe rooms and whilst this was nice and quiet the bathroom fan didn't work so the room steamed up, and the quality of the bathroom just seemed a bit cheap. Bed was comfortable and even with the wedding we stayed for still going on, had a good sleep. We ordered breakfast in bed but this didn't turn up at the requested time, and after a phone call to reception took a while to still arrive.. They didn't charge us for the delivery but not sure if this was a mistake or a gesture of goodwill.

Lovely location though but bar drinks seemed very expensive for the area. Probably give it a miss for a return stay..

Sorry your fan didnt work, but unfortunately they dont give us any warning of when they are due to fail, so apologies for the inconvenience caused.

If we get it wrong you dont pay, so as you didnt get your breakfast when requested we didnt charge for it when we did deliver it. Not a mistake. Our policy.

Hope you do use us again. Kind regards

I recently stayed at the Cwrt Bleddyn for a nice relaxing get away with my partner as I arrived at the hotel I was met with a lady at reception who I think her name was Amy? also with Amy was a small child sat behind the reception desk I do realise it is half term but bringing your children to work when you work in a hotel is really unprofessional as they were messing around behind the desk and then later on I rang down to the hotel and the little girl answered the phone!! I really could not believe this surely this child should not be behind the desk for this reason!!

Thanks for your review and if I can clarify. The little girl was on Reception for a very short period of time as a member of the team who had called into the hotel on a day off had been told her partner had been involved in an accident and had to dash off. Sorry but at the time our first concern was for her and her partner so the team offered to look after the little girl in this emergency. Sorry if you found this offensive, but I hope now you have the full picture yoy may change your opinion.

Given the same situation again, I hope the team would react in the same way.

Glad you enjoyed the rest of your stay.

Kindest regards

My partner and I stayed here a few weeks ago. The building is a bit pink but apart from that we had an enjoyable two nights stay. Spacious room, staff were helpful and breakfast and dinner were very good. Mind you, the two day stay was made even more enjoyable because we booked it via a Daily Mirror offer. Two nights for the two of us, £30 per room per night. Excellent breakfast, £5.99 each...job done!!!
