Always delicious and always a nice crowd, this is great lounge where you can watch sports, play board games, watch the sunset, listen to live music or just hang out and dine. Whichever way you go, you cannot go wrong!

Over the years, this bar has been hit and miss, but there is one gem on the menu: Bacon Cheddar Cheese Burger. Made with a generous helping of Plath's bacon-a local favorite butcher. Other choices on the menu have been average for me. This is a bar/lounge. Ok for kids, but ideal to sneak away for a drink and a burger, and watch a little football.

The guitarist-singer on Friday night was very good, as was the meal. The best part was the Tigers game was on the TV and the Tigers beat Cleveland indians. (We're Michigangers) Outdoor dining is available, and the sunsets are fantastic as you overlook the water from any seat in the place, inside or outside.

The bar tenders were very friendly, personable, and made great suggestions while being tentative. The live music was great and provided a lively atmosphere. Only downside was that the bar closes by 11:30.

Frankly, the view saves the day, hence the "average" rating. If you can, weather permitting, get a table outside on the terrace and marvel at Lake Michigan's beauty. Then there's the food. Nothing special... certainly, not in keeping with the quality of the view. The usual assortment of burgers, salads, local fish. Okay stuff, but at best, average.

Then we get to the service and the hotel. Oh... and the restaurnt's name. Why on earth would you name a Northern Michigan restaurant "The South American Grille...?" Are you kidding? Is there anything at all Latin about the location? The food? C'mon guys, pay attention. And while you're at it, train the servers. Train them to occasionally stop by their tables to see whether everything's okay. I had to leave the table and hunt my server down for more salad dressing.

Which gets me back to the hotel, itself. Inside the restaurant, piles of recently bussed plates with half-eaten food were left sitting on a cart. Why weren't they taken into the kitchen to be washed? I'll tell you why. Lack of staff, poor training and no management oversight. The signs are everywhere. The hotel just has that neglected, "no one really cares" feel. The lobby tables had empty glasses left on them. The men's bathroom was filthy. The entrance door was black with dirty smudges... puddles of urine under the urinals... discarded towels all over the floor. Not good signs. I can just imagine the kitchen...

I got the distinct feeling that whatever management did exist had one objective: keep costs to a minimum, which means skimping on service and cleanliness. But that lake view. Oh my. I think my next visit, if there is one, will be for drinks. Hard to screw that up, right?

Note to Marriott. Are you really involved with this property? I'm not much of a Marriott fan, but they do know a thing or two about management and cleanliness. Maybe the Renaissance name is a tip off. Maybe they're managing -- or mismanaging -- the joint. But now you've been warned, so plan accordingly...
