Best Western Willerby Manor Hotel
Ranked #1 of 3 Hotels in Willerby
Reviewed 22 August 2007

We have just returned from a visit to Hull and chose to stay at the Best Western Willerby Manor Hotel. On arrival the car park was full, a wedding reception was taking place. After eventually finding a space we approached the reception. Three members of staff where behind the desk. After a few minutes, when their conversation was over, I gave them our book in details. 3 out of 10 for friendliness of welcome. We then carried all our luggage from the car into our room, no help being offered.
The room was fine, big comfy bed, nice view of garden. En-suite facilities good. My only complaint was the lack of a decent shower. I wish hotels would get stronger showers as opposed to mixer types.
Wedding reception disco goes on until very very late. There is some noise but not too bad. perhaps they should tell you when booking if there is to be a disco 200 yds from your room!
Breakfast, well.. wanted scrambled eggs and was told " Chefs too busy at weekends, you can't have them". There is in fact a weekend menu and weekday menu, not mentioned at booking. All in all, nice hotel, good bar and room service.

I have just returned from WM after a year's hiatus, so I thought I would update my last report. In the manner of some TA reports I will do the good, bad, could be improved. Overall I still think it is a good choice.

Good

The bar, its staff and the food you can buy there. Very relaxing. The leisure facilites-pool gym overall. The staff - especially breakfast lady and the reception. The bathrooms and the views into the gardens if you are at the back of the hotel. The standard of cleanliness overall. The cooked breakfasts. The Gilchrist and Soames toiletries.

Bad

I had forgotten about those awful hairdryers and they are badly positioned too! Ladies go to the pool to dry your hair. The pool towels- are they smaller or am I larger? They could be bigger really. The croissants and cakes at the breakfast buffet could be presented better, so maybe that should be in

Could be improved

As I say I have been several times here. Improvements could be made in the pool area, which is not quite as good as it used to be in terms of upkeep and generally showing age. I still like it though, and the jacuzzi is a good size. The buffet at breakfast has been moved from the end to the middle of the room and the tables rearranged, which I don't like. The smaller tables now don't have garden views, The buffet could be presented better- more French perhaps? I also think some of the decor is reaching its sell by date, carpet, wallpaper just in terms of colour etc. A rolling refurb perhaps at some point?

There were lots of guests of various nationalities and it would be great to know what they thought.

Overall then, if you get a good rate it is good value. Ask for a room that overlooks the garden not the car park.
And I may sound hair obsessed but what used to be a wine shop attached to the hotel is now a hairdresser, so you can always book a blow dry.

We stayed here several times last year whilst sorting out father-in-law's estate and the staff couldn't be more helpful. They always upgraded our room when they could, food in Icon restaurant was excellent, (room a little chilly with air con on full in height of summer, but nothing major).
Beautiful grounds, reception staff excellent - bar staff a little slow but still learning English. Would definitely stay there again.

Ignore the previous review, This is a commercial hotel in a pleasant suburb of hull. We booked a one night stay on the strength of the leisure facilities and two AA rosette restaurant.
We had never been to Hull before, we were researching my wife's ancestry
On arrival we were very apprehensive, the reception is accessed from the rear of the hotel and it bears little resemblence to the picture on the website! there are some steep stairs to the reception which are carpeted and inevitably marked by the transfer of dirt from the outside. However, that was the last poor impression!
Check in was efficient and the staff very pleasant. Even though we arrived at 13.30 hrs the room was ready. We booked the evening before and requested the best rate for an executive double room. We were quoted the normal rate for a standard room and were delighted to find that we were allocated the Latour Suite which was immaculately clean and very spacious.
Leisure facilities were excellent, pool was large and spotlessly clean, and the rest of the facilities were of a similar standard.
Dinner in the Icon restaurant was originally only available at 9.30pm. We agreed but were very impressed when the receptionist telephoned us back about an hour later to say that there had been a cancellation and that 8.30pm was now available - this was a very nice touch and typical of the hotel's caring approach.
Dinner was excellent and the service attentive. Yes there is a pianola but it was not intrusive and added ambience. The Icon dining room is modern, intimate and imaginatively decorated. wine selection was limited but very reasonably priced and of excellent quality.
Breakfast was served in another restaurant with several french windows and lovely garden views.
This is an exceptionally well run busy hotel which offers good value for money. It is conveniently located and I would recommend nearby Beveley and the historic "old city" area in Hull.

A beautiful building truly ruined, poor Willerby Manor has seen better days. It's crying out for a sensitive restoration and for all those temporary-looking additions to be ripped down and burned. The staff, however, are friendly and helpful and the food at Icon good (if you can ignore the pianola belting out the greatest hits of Phil Collins). If you're there in hot weather, bear in mind that the windows only open about three inches. The grounds are lovely though...
