We stayed there one night during our vacations in Romania.

The place: was like a paradise in the middle of nowhere, we are driving through bad muddy roads and villages reminding us of previous century, not from aspects of medieval villages you see generally in Europe, but third world images as far as the quality of life people live there. Imagine that the majority of the houses have no central water facilities. Hens and ducks are all around and the cows too. It is like watching a movie depicting life from another century, truly an unforgettable experience.

The Room: we stayed outside of the main building in an independent spacious room with antique furniture. The sheets were clean but worn out and the room had that kind of characteristic -in very old places- smell.

The service: people were very helpful, very kind, very welcome. The women in the kitchen don’t speak any English.

The Breakfast: was excellent with homemade products from their farm.

The food: traditional and very tasty served in a cellar diner room

General atmosphere: very nice

The Price: was comparable with most western European standards but expensive for what we have used in Romanian. Consider that normally you pay 25 to 30 Euros for a double room in a bed and breakfast and there we paid 80 Euros.

A dozen of us headed east to celebrate a friend's 50th birthday and Count Kalnoky's guesthouse promised something a little out of the ordinary. Communication was excellent from the outset with all emails being clearly answered. Transfers were efficient and flexible - we were able to stop in Sighisoara on our way from Targu Mures airport. It was bitingly cold (-25C) when we arrived but the rooms were super warm and very comfortable and charming - lower guest house. Food was hale and hearty - expect to eat a lot of Pork - and we all enjoyed some of the local specialities. Wine was excellent too and there was never any problem with opening another bottle on the house. The wine cellar made for great evening meals, with the fire blazing, hot food, robust wine. laughter and much chat. The guides were delightful and went the extra mile to ensure that we had everything we wanted. Out wild days skiing in the Carpathians was memorable in many ways and Gabor saw to it that we got the most out of it as he also did on our wildlife walk. This is a part of the world recovering from years of communist rule and it does have a very provincial and unspoilt feel to it. The old manor house that the count is restoring has a rather beautiful 'Anna Karenina' atmosphere to it and the peace and quiet is sublime. It was a truly memorable stay and left us all with a feeling of having been somewhere rather special and unique.

I felt moved to write this review after reading one or two of the more negative responses to this hotel.

My sister and I stayed here for a week back in January 2008, and had fantastic and unforgettable time. Count Kalnoky's Guesthouses are anything but conventional and in order to appreciate them, guests need to be prepared to leave behind their expectations of smooth, standard and boringly predictable experience. This hotel is REAL. Rooms are not finessed and plush, they are characterful and quirky. Guests are not supplied with an endless stream of entertainment in the evenings - they are expected to make their own, in front of a crackling fire with home-made drinks provided. Food is authentic - my sister and I found every meal absolutely delicious, but if you require a French-style cordon bleu dining experience then you won't like it. The trips we went on were fascinating and all went very smoothly - but they were not riddled with health-and-safety protections and small risks are taken which inevitably I guess might occasionally backfire. Though to be honest the greatest hazard was slipping over on ice, and nothing can protect against that.

This part of Transylvania, as others here have already noted, exists in a different century to anywhere else I have ever visited: it is an absolute privilege to have seen it, and I would not have missed it for all the world. In order to appreciate it, however, you need to leave behind some of your 21st century expectations.

I have been to this guest house many times, with friends and family, and each time was better than the last. It is the one place in Romania I've come across that take care of you completely in terms of daily trips -- to ancient villages and forests and caves. If you are in Romania or planning to come here this is the ideal base of operations

We chose this location to celebrate my mother's birthday. Miclosoara is not far from Brasov, only 36 km, and the directions provided on the website helped us to reach easily. The village is very beautiful, with typical Transylvanian houses. We were greeted very warmly, with traditional tuica (local brandy). Accommodation was made to "lower houses", in a large courtyard, there are beautiful individual homes. Rustic furniture is reconditioned. The rooms are very comfortable, with bathroom and hot water, heated in winter. The atmosphere is rustic, unique. In the courtyard is a large wood gazebo with a table and wooden benches. We chose the option to have lunch and dinner. The food was very tasty. Particularly interesting was the soup is apples. In the area there are many apple orchards. Dinner was served in very nicely designed cellar with fireplace. Breakfast was very tasty, with local dishes: butter, cheese, bread, jam, honey, eggs, ham. The staff was very helpful. In the area you can visit the fortified churches in neighboring villages or hiking.
