“Perfect place”

We stayed over Christmas and had a truly magical time. The staff who looked after us, the accommodation (we stayed in the little blue house), the meals and facilities were all excellent. On Christmas Day, children from the village entertained us to bell ringing and carol singing after breakfast. Then we took horses and carts into the forest for a BBQ. Later in the evening before a great dinner, a small orchestra performed for us. A very different and special Christmas Day. The visits and trips out to other areas of this fascinating region were also very good. I would love to return in the spring time.

Room Tip: Little blue house is lovely and quite close to the main lodge for meals.

We have just got back from this beautiful retreat and we miss it already. The bedroom and communal spaces were so cosy and each night an open fire was lit - a real treat after a day out in the snow. It is really is a special place and we will always remember the scenery and wonderful hosts. Thank you so much! We highly recommend you!

Our stay at Count Kalnoky;s was beyond our wildest expectations. To experience Medieval Europe virtually unchanged from then to now, you must spend time in the countryside of Romania, and a few days at Count Kalnoky's.
Multilingual guides will accompany you on a variety of excursions to the cities, or the countryside surrounding Miclosoara, and in the evening you'll return to enjoy an authentic meal prepared by the local townspeople, while you share your experiences with fellow travellers from around the world in the dining cellar.
One morning, we rose from our cozy down filled beds to watch the bugler lead the cows out of the village to the hillside pastures for the day...a ritual repeated day after day for centuries...unchanged. And later in the evening, the cows returned, each finding their way to their own barn to rest for the night.
My father chose to take a tour that went high into the hillsides to see the sheep herder, learn of his way of life, and enjoy a picnic lunch prepared over a fire. He returned and after wandering around the town for a bit, found himself in a small cafe enjoying a beer with the locals at day's end. My mother and I chose to go on the trip to the city to Brasov, and some of the nearby fortified villages and churches. My mother was born in Romania and came to Canada as a child. To see that way of life, and learn a bit about the history of her homeland was and experience beyond compare, and a once in a lifetime privilege made even more authentic by having Count Kalnoky's as our home base.
Do not miss this glimpse into the past.

Truly magical spot. We stayed in little blue house that felt like a fairy tale spot come to life. Service was beyond (way beyond) wonderful! Dinner and breakfast were delicious, and they even packed a lunch for us to take on the road back to Bucharest. Count's Hunting Lodge is not to be believed, and we were lucky enough to get a tour. Even the train ride to the area was something from a movie. It is a rare treat to visit this magnificent area and charming resort.

Room Tip: We loved the blue house

Visited the two locations with tourists by bicycles.
Excellent locations, great accommodation and food.
Great for kids, but also ideal for quiet retreat.
The old existing houses are well renovated, with old renovated furniture.

We stayed 4 nights at Miklosvar & 3 nights at Zalanpatak. Both properties were equally beautiful & unique. Zalanpatak is more remote & quiet but so very lovely and surrounded with great mountain views. Both properties have ample outdoor seating areas. The candlelit wine cellar at Miklosvar was magical. The wine served at dinner each night was excellent & plentiful. Our only complaint was with the food. Although the food was tasty, it was repetitive. There was very little variation which can be a bit tiresome after a week. We greatly appreciated the efforts of the manager at Zalanpatak to make the meals a bit more varied for us. But that would be our only complaint - everything else was fantastic. The rooms were extremely charming & authentically decorated. The excursions were wonderful & the staff (property managers & guides) was very friendly and flexible. Staying at either one of these properties (or both) will bring you back in time & give you a true sense of authentic, rural Transylvania.

We spent three nights in Zalanpatak, owned by Prince Charles but managed by Count Kalnoky. The village is remote and lovely, and like stepping back in time to a Thomas Hardy novel. The rooms was beautiful, with local furniture and ceramics. Food and wine were great. Locals and staff were warm and friendly and guides were knowledgable.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Travel to a place that time forgot. Count Kalnoky's family has returned to Transylvania after 50 years of exile. They set about finding ways to save their heritage and restore the Estate to its former character. Through the development of a unique tourism venture, the Kalnoky's are turning their vision into reality. Our guesthouses in the Transylvanian village of Miklosvar / Miclosoara date back to the 1800’s and before. The buildings have been carefully restored in order to preserve their original charm and character. The guesthouses are situated within spacious gardens, some with storks nesting on nearby rooftops. They have been beautifully furnished with antiques in the Transylvanian Szekler and Saxon styles. To ensure that our guests have a warm and comfortable stay also in winter, we have enhanced the original wood stoves by a hidden central heating system. The village has little infrastructure, therefore we cannot (and do not wish to) claim technical perfection. Some streets remain unpaved and pot-holed, so can become dusty in the sun and muddy after the rain. There can be no denying the rustic charm and original character, which offers an opportunity to step back in time, as if you were in a 19th century novel and had come to visit friends in Transylvania's countryside.  ... more   less
