“We'll be back”
Reviewed 14 June 2014

We genuinely enjoyed our 6 night stay at the Sandcastle. Having our morning coffee on the deck, listening to the sounds of the birds, with a beautiful view of the bay. Enjoying a yoga session in the studio, a relaxing massage in the treatment room, and soaking in the spa to the light of the full moon. Our 2 year old toddler loved exploring the little bridge, stream, fountain, and greeting the horses, sheep, and Sal the doggy. The host was friendly and very accommodating, our golden lab was accepted as part of the family. We'll be back!

We really enjoyed having you stay, I miss your daughter exploring everywhere. It seemed Sal and your Lab hit it off in the end. Do come back - I understand with a new member of the family. The very best for the future. Steve

On arrival we thought beautiful location and a charming kiwi style but that is where the joy ended for us. We didn't mind that it was run down but the cleanliness was awful, crumbs, beds looked like they had been slept in the night before, our feet were black from the floors and when you have two young children crawling on them this is not acceptable. This however wasn't the worst part. We had been offered the use of the travel cot which was folded up in the corner, as I unfolded it in the evening a shower of rat and mouse poo fell out if it! Needless to say we did not use it. When I told the owner when we were leaving he did say sorry and that he really should have checked it and would have shaken out the poo.....this is NOT OK, the thought that other peoples children might sleep in a cot that has had vermin in is disgusting. His attitude was almost as if it didn't matter as long as the user didn't know it had been in there...NOT OK. There is not excuse for selling rooms which as dirty and certainly not cots which could transfer disease. We have both worked in the hospitality trade for 20 years and cleanliness is king, at the end of the day it's your main job to make sure rooms are clean and customers feel comfortable, if you can't provide this then you should not be in this business. And if you don't really care when a customer complains about something as serious as rat poo in a cot then you are going to get a bad review for all potential customers to see and this will harm your business.

I wish you had popped over to see me Fiona as I could easily resolved our mistake with the cot and this would have made your stay more comfortable. I am very sorry the cot offered had not been checked and fell well below standards we expect of ourselves.
At The Sandcastle we take our host responsibilities very seriously and are always approachable.
We have taken this seriously and are making sure nothing of this sort can ever happen again. We also understand the organization needed as a mum to bring two small children to Golden Bay for a night away and sincerely regret we did not meet your expectation in this instance. Very best wishes Steve

We are a family with a boy of 8, we just begin our 8 months journey to come back to France after 15 years living in New Caledonia : after 3 weeks travelling all around South Island, from Cristchurch, Dunedin to the Catlins and Queenstown, and looking for such a place without finding it, we've finally found it here !
And what we've found is just perfect to us : a cosy cottage, with everything you need (if not, just ask to Steve, he always has the solution !), espacially great views and lovely sounds of nature (singing birds are everywhere and the small fountain and stream create a music in the background you'll miss when you leave here...). We appreciate a lot of things here, it's hard to speak about everything... : yoga courses every monday, the pizza party in the garden (thanks a lot Steve for the dough and to prepare the fire/oven !), the special atmosphere of the Golden Bay, the Abel Tasman coast track, Wainui beach (and collecting mussels and cockles there !), the perfect climate (espacially for us, tropical islanders, in this season !) and, of course, the very friendly feeling with Steve and Hayley, the owners. We need a quiet place, with enough privacy but with some relationships when it's possible too, and we've got it here ! All of that for an affordable price : perfect !
We first have booked for a week but will extend for nearly 3 or 4 and so we create our "new home" here. A very good place, with very good people inside ! For sure, we recommand the Sandcastle !

Thanks for taking time to write a great review. Hayley and I are enjoyed telling you all the things to do in the bay and seeing you visit them. We both felt you are spot on describing The Sandcastle. The very best with the rest of your trip.

The Sandcastle was a perfect basecamp for exploring Golden Bay, beautifully situated between the sea and hills. The bungalows are spacious and offer you everything you need, including a fully equipped kitchen and a sunny terrace. We enjoyed the sauna and the common room for yoga as well. If you are looking for a basic, good-spirited and self-contained unit out in the green with very welcoming hosts, here you go! And: very good value for what you get!

We had such a truly wonderful weekend here. From the instant you arrive your cares start to drift away as you relax, relax, relax. The cabins are exceptionally clean, and well equipped with full kitchen facilities. You wake in the morning to bird song, and the owners are incredibly friendly and helpful. Our group enjoyed a fantastic evening cooking together and sharing food around the pizza oven on Friday evening. Conveniently located not too far from the harbour for boaties, plenty of parking and a gorgeous setting.

Highly recommended for a weekend or even a week-long getaway!

A charming location with convenient access to the northern entrances to Abel Tasman Park and to the beaches and attractions of Golden Bay. There are several restaurants nearby and many more traveler services in Takaka, a short drive away
The sandcastle is a group of cottages, not motel rooms. Our cottage was comfortable and clean. The setting feels rustic and rural. I was disappointed to find that our cottage (#2) did not have either a water view or wifi service. Cottages 4-6 would offer the view and presumably wifi as well, since when I walked in front of these cottages I would find myself in wifi range.
It is disappointing to find lodging that does not live up to how it is represented on the business web site

Girlfriend, dogs and I had the pleasure of Staying at Steve's fabulous Sandcastles in Pohara. Firstly Pohara is a great place - you can't go wrong. Secondly and most importantly Sandcastles is a fun place to stay. We had a cottage in the complex. It was clean and tidy, plus had room for visitors. Steve's breakfasts are to die for. It was kind of fun seeing Steve collecting the free range eggs, then out breakfast would appear a little later. The place is very relaxing and peaceful. The only interruptions are bird noises :)His dog and our dogs enjoyed eachother's company and had some good games, without disturbing the other guests. Our hosts are the most genuine warm people you could hope to stay with. All the best, Bill Douglas.
