The surroundings play a huge part in this review of course - Pohara Beachfront Motel is right on the beach, and oh what a beach. The owners were lovely and friendly and even though we had booked their cheapest room, they gave us a better one because they had one available and they had decided to no longer let their cheap room because they felt it wasn't nice enough!
So anyone with that kind of integrity gets my vote. We stayed for three nights, but could have stayed for three weeks. All amenities were available - loved that there was also a compost where we could put our food scraps. The room was clean, linen was clean, views were fab, hosts lovely. We don't have kids, but it would be an ideal spot if you did - you can sit on your deck and watch them play on the huge lawn.

Room Tip: They are all great, although some are closer to the beach than others.

Of all the places our group stayed on South Island this was the best all around. The rooms were all clean and well appointed. Nothing extraordinary, just very nice and completely adequate. The view of the Bay both day and night was a memorable experience. The local eateries were like most we found in NZ, very good! The AC remote was a the only thing with a glitch. You won't be disappointed if you choose Pohara Beachfront. Fiona was very accommodating to all of our group, as I'm sure she will be to you.

Room Tip: Choose upper floors of two story units.

This was the highlight of a trip to the South Island, with stays in several locations. Hosts are superb, and the motel units are located right by the beachfront - in a quiet cul-de-sac. Peaceful The units are tastefully decorated, every need met. Reasonably priced. Great furnishings, quality bedding and attractive art work on walls. Extremely clean. Located near great local restaurants. Scenic beach for low tide walks and has a walkway above the beach as well. Lovely limestone cliffs further round the bay, interesting boat dock area. Good walks. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay, relaxing and special. Would love to stay there again.

Room Tip: Choose a unit with an ocean view - wonderful to wake up, open the venetian blinds, and lie back in b...

We had a wonderful 3 night stay here. It is absolutely beautiful with lovely chalets and a warm and friendly welcome from our hosts. Our chalet was on the front overlooking the Bay with lovely views and sunsets over the water. Spotlessly clean and well appointed this was a great place to stay and recharge our batteries whilst travelling around the country. The laundry room is convenient and the washing machine, for a small charge, is easy to use. There is a tumble dryer which I didn't use. I borrowed one of the drying racks and used it back at the chalet. There is a local store which is well stocked and a number of restaurants all an easy walk away. If required a larger supermarket can be found at Takaka. There is so much to do and see. We enjoyed the Art trail between Takaka and Collingwood. There are many potters and artist's studios to visit including Paul Winspear's pottery
where we had great fun purchasing a number of pieces! Collingwood is lovely and worth a visit and don't forget to pop into the museum. Takaka has a 9 hole golf course which is a bit of fun and paid for by honesty box. My husband enjoyed his round using clubs which were kindly lent to him by Fiona, I meanwhile enjoyed the view whilst walking the course! Walks on the beach and a visit to Tata beach nearby this is a great place to stay and make it longer than 3 nights!

Definetly a great location, the beach fron units have an awesome view and within walking distance from the beech.
Different units different distribution and floor plan. The facility is clean and well equiped as far as the kitchen is concerned. Comfortable and actually with unlimited WiFi which is not a comon thing in NZ. Every one elso charges by 30 min blocks.
The backyard with BBQ and a nice firepit and herb garden are a plus, We used both kitchen and BBQ as well and had a very pleasant stay.
There are a couple good restaurants whithin walking distance and of course the walk to the beech is a must. At night, star gazing was one of the best we had on our trip.
Great for a romantic and relaxing retreat.

Room Tip: The Units near the office are also close to the laundry and the BBQ. And you stil can get an Ocean V...

Our first time in NZ and we went straight to Pohara and stayed in an ocean front unit at the Pohara Beachfront Motel. Great location, wonderful comfortable bed and all the amenities of home with a gorgeous view of the ocean right off the deck! Not a good beach for swimming but great location for getting to Abel Tasman, Farewell Spit and all the other interesting places in Golden Bay. After a long trip over, it was a great place to unwind. Fiona & Barry were great hosts and gave us lots of ideas for the rest of our trip - would highly recommend and will definitely be back!

Overall, we enjoyed our stay here in a garden 1-bedroom unit. Positives: unit was clean, kitchen was well-equipped for self-catering, on-site bbq with herb garden was excellent (we used it), covered parking adjoins unit, a private covered deck with table and chairs is available, location is right on Golden Bay, and it had an old-time Kiwi retro feel that we liked. Negatives: bathroom is so small you have to go outside to change your mind. Seriously, it had one of those super-narrow sinks and was extremely cramped. Also know that there is no actual sand at Pohara, the bay here has more of a mud consistency. Not exactly inviting to lounge around on. So to call this "beachfront" might be somewhat misleading as there is no actual sandy beach. But the grounds of the motel are nicely landscaped, and there is a public walking track right along the Bay. Overall, recommended, just be aware of what you'll get and not get.
