Five star? Well.... It all depends doesn't it. There are a number of aspects to being truly 5 star and to be honest, for the most part, this place does ok. The standard and quality of the building, layout, facilities, food, decor and quality of the staff they have are all first class - 5 star. We had a small suite (sleeps 3-4) with a private pool. Fantastic and well worth the money. Bathroom big and super and all mod cons. Where this place falls down a little is lack of management. The staff do a super job and work hard but the place lacks coordination that's all. I disagree with so many of the stupid criticisms posted here. "The pool was too cold"! "It's not five star compared to the places I have stayed in New York"! Come on you people! This place is great for Greece. Ok, so I don't think you should have to queue a little at the main bar for a drink in a 5 star joint but hey, we got over it! Do not be put off visiting this super hotel. Just make sure you read the helpful tips. It is a bit isolated, you may need a car if you want to go places, you may have to stand behind 3 people to get a drink! You WILL have a lovely relaxing time and meet some lovely people. Like Stuart & Tina ;-)

BUT..... cannot fault the efforts of the staff - although Yanni - he did have his moments as well described by a number of people - nice guy but wanted the bar to be run his way even if you stood for 10 minutes - then a typical greeting - "have you been waiting long"

Clearly people have different perceptions wrt to what is 5* - whilst this is an above average 4* hotel it cannot begin to be called a 5* - the definition is widely mis - quoted and hence leads to the wide range of views - we stayed 10/17th September and can relate to many of the comments made in the reviews. The hotel is REMOTE - If you are unsure then use Google earth - it does have superb views - the food is above average - the main building is well decorated - the annex rooms vary in size, shape and condition - all are located down a steep hill. The taverna was closed - there are insuffieinet Sun Umbrellas v Sun Beds - simple maths will confirm. In general you cannot fault the staff for effort - reviews are so subjective and can only relate to the personal experince on the day. The hotel is being picked up by many of the "bucket warehouse deals" - they will offer upgrades/sea views etc. non of which are available. This causes immediate friction on arrival with reception - BEWARE -you will only get a basic room.
A very difficult hotel to rate - sadly for me the quality aspect is out weighed by the extreme remote location.

Room Tip: Must be in the main building.

It's the first time I've seen my wife close to tears on a final evening. Some friends we'd made during our stay wanted to say goodbye. We invariably dined earlier than they did. Would we be in the lounge after dinner? "I don't think I can" was my wifes response to the question "I think I'm going to burst into tears." Now, anyone who knows my wife knows that that's something she not prone to doing.
After a tough year - especially for my wife, we had wanted a break somewhere remote: Away from civilisation; away from hawkers touting their wares on beaches and pool-sides; away from sun loungers lined up like dominos; and, away from anything even vaguely resembling a "family" resort. But we did still want the comforts of home: Comfortable accommodation, good food, decent drinks, helpful staff.
The Mabely Grand isn't perfect. Frustrating, because it has the potential to be. A grand lounge, good accommodation, rooms with shared pools, excellent food and some excellent staff. Without Giota's attention to detail, we may never have made it to the hotel in the first place. Petros, the waiter for who nothing was ever too much trouble. An all-inclusive with smoked salmon, sucking pig roast and whitebait on the menu?
But, where was the Byzantine restaurant? The Taverna? The open-air theatre? Even the children's play area, covered in pine needles and tucked behind trees at the side of the hotel looked unloved.
The impression given is that this hotel, which opened in 2008, was never truly finished. It has the infrastructure to cope with more guests that it's current room count warrants and, as a result the Taverna is equipped with nothing more than redundant fridges, a mountain bike and an old wire rack. The open-air threatre can only be found by picking your way along a weed-strewn gravel track and the rooftop (an ideal location for a restaurant or bar) is nothing but an empty space.
Looking down on the hotel from the foot of The Cross that crowns the nearby hilltop, the hotel appears almost lost, surrounded by parcels of land that might have been the next phase of the hotels development.
This all said, it ticked almost all of our boxes. Yes, it needs to ditch the hopeless sunbeds by the lower pool for more practical longers and yes, it needs to invest in a shedload of parasols before the next season starts. But as a place to rest in quiet comfort and recharge batteries, you'd have to go a long way to do better.

Room Tip: If you can afford to, book a room with a sharing pool.

First a gentle pace of life that suited us to the ground nice people both staff and guests alike a place is what you make it and for some if it doesn't flog chips or coke a plenty it's not for them. I'm glad to hear the majority of staff are the same all power to them they work really hard with grace that's amiss in our backyard. Bit sad that mabely gets such good rating I was hoping to keep it to myself like a previous submission Giota and the rest of the staff are perfect pity I can't say the same for the odd tourist who will find it necessary to knock or blind for little or no reason. Not the place for kids a place for grown ups who are grown ups and that want to lay back and forget about the world around us

Booked the Mabely Grand Hotel despite the mixed reviews from Tripadvisor for a much earned retreat.

I'm afraid the Greek Tourist Authorities must revisit how to allow hotels to award themselves 5* status.

Summary

Reception area and main body of hotel very grand though small attention to detail let's it down. For example I noticed the same piece of rubbish on a table for over three days, the stairs were dusty and the gentlemen toilet urinals were out of order all week, and for some bizarre reason the toilets were like a sauna.

Reception Check in okay, not a lot of information, other than a sheet of paper to explain the rules!

Concierge assistance when checking in - excellent !  Though if you are fortunate to stay at the bottom of the hill, this assistance is very much a necessity !

Room summary

Bathroom

No bath
My two year old can grout better than the Greeks - awful finish!
Difficult to feel it was clean given the finish despite housekeeping doing their best.

Bedroom

Air Conditioning welcomed and working
Nice balcony with pleasant view of the pool and the coastline
Fridge in room Nice but empty.  No real point as unless you have a car and can travel to a shop (there arent any close by) or brought items requiring chilling, they may as well remove them.  I turned it off as it was noisier than the Air Con through the night
No bottles of drinking water in the room unless you took it from the bar. 5*?
Tea & Coffee making facilities - none.  It's a good walk either up the hill of an evening for a drink or during the day down to the pool bar if you wanted a hot drink.
No Iron / Trouser press in room
TV was as much a waste of time as the fridge.  Quite a few channels and of course BBC World though the picture quality was as good as standing on top of Mont Blanc in a snow storm.
No Film channel to purchase any films in the evening if you wanted to retreat to your room to avoid the nightly entertainment which every night was a Quiz, except Thursdays.
The bed, whilst a king size (with two singles pushed together) is big enough though was as hard as my wooden dinner table so not really upto a 5* luxury one would have expected.

Restaurant

We arrived on a Thursday evening - the one night when there is no Quiz as its Greek night.
Food was excellent and was a good example of what 5* Hotel should have.
The following evenings are not so elaborate and whilst the buffet food is pretty good it doesn't have that 5* feel.  Still very good however.

If you appreciate a nice glass of wine the hotel house wine from the Bar or Restaurant is very poor quality, in fact it is in the shops for a little over 1Euro.  You can purchase a nice bottle for circa Euro 30.

There is a Blonde waitress in the restaurant also whom is as warm as an eskimo's nose, who doesn't smile at any of the guests and is quite uncomfortable to engage with should you require something.

Upper Pool area

Is the nicest of the two pools on offer as the sun loungers are very comfortable however if the hotel is slightly busy there are not enough of these.

The two toilets by the pool are okay in terms of cleanliness.

There are no refreshments available by the upper pool, unless you dry yourself, get dressed and climb the many stairs into the hotel to wait by the only single hotel bar which isn't manned during the day.  When you manage to find a waitress or anyone you can get yourself a drink.

Failing the hotel bar, there is a pool side bar by the lower pool if you want to walk down the hill and then back up to where you were sitting.

Once a day a waiter will come and serve you around the upper pool which saves you at least one trip a day. 5*?

Lower Pool

Very nice clean tiled area around the pool with a lovely view out over the coastline.
Pool bar available with rules on what you may have, ie food is excluded (as in snacks) from All Inclusive package.

The sun loungers are nice and comfortable whilst lying on your back though unless you are a contortionist you can't lay on your front and therefore the hard tile floor is your only option.

The toilets for the downstairs pool are a disgrace and are not cleaned throughout the day.  The ladies was covered in a red liquid, all over the wall and door - I will leave the specific point there suffice to say whomever the disgusting women was needs to appreciate others and was no doubt someone who has never cleaned up in their lives !!!

The hotel bar was manned by a single person who despite his best efforts did his best to provide a good service despite the rules imposed on guests and him and his ability to provide a good service to his patrons.  I expect more staff in the 5* star Hotels I stay in.  British are famous for queuing, here you will not be disappointed if this is something you like.

Entertainment

One would have expected some form of entertainment in a 5* hotel, a singer, a pianist, etc other than on the Greek evening.

Other than the every night Quiz of varying subject matters there is of course many people (British unfortunately) talking over one another telling their new "holiday friends" about themselves, all rather annoyingly as clearly not remotely interested in one another, though rather amusing to watch and listen to. Why do so many people who clearly have money talk absolute rubbish...largely about themself? Anyway plently of people of this nature to entertain oneself.

Over all whilst I appreciate the stay did not cost as much as I am used to paying, I naively assumed this was a promotional arrangement and not indicative of the reduced quality of service one would have received.

A good week in the sun, at a nice hotel though over promised under delivered. Very quiet and very pleasant to be away from the rough areas of Zakynthos.  So much potential for a lovely setting, with the right management in place (of which you rarely see) to make right the small differences.  This could be a very nice 5* hotel given some attention to detail.  For now it's at best a low 4* high 3*.

If you want Five star go somewhere else.

Room Tip: If the room is poor complain and don't let the reception staff fob you off, stand your ground on...

We contacted Giota on reception a couple of weeks before our stay at the Mabely Grand and received a couple of very prompt and charming e-mails answering all our questions in detail.
Our shuttle service was friendly, on time and a lovely 40 minute drive at a leisurely pace giving us chance to chat to the driver and find out a little about the hotel and the island.
On arrival Giota was on reception with a smile and a rather nice upgrade that came as a lovely surprise. A very friendly porter loaded our luggage onto a golf buggy and drove us to our room where he carried the cases in and showed us our suite.
We arrived in time for a late lunch which was beautifully presented and well cooked.
To be honest the range of food types and styles was extremely good at breakfast, lunch and dinner during the whole of our stay. Our compliments to the chefs.
The hotel itself was spotless, well decorated and spacious with two pools to choose from although we do agree with a couple of the guests complaints and think a lot more shade needs to be made available in the form of brolleys but this is our only small critisism.
The room was cleaned each day, beds made up, bins emptied etc by a very friendly and attentive housekeeping team.
All other areas were clean and tidy and the pools were cleaned daily.
We had a day out at the beach and the trip was pleasant and on time both ways with a very friendly driver who could not do enough for us. Gave us loads of information on the way and told us the best part of the beach to go to, where to eat etc.
In short, the Mabely did everything that was promised and more.
Our only complaint would be about some of the other guests.
Some of the comments on trip advisor from people there at the same time as us are extremely unfair and I am sure very upsetting for the staff who face an unsure future in a very difficult financial time for their country.
Signs by both pools with basic rules on safety a two year old could understand were ignored completely. First a glass was broken and after a miserable attempt to pick up the pieces the couple promptly left for lunch without mentioning it to any staff member.
Then a fouresome thought it was a good idea to let us all know they could afford champagne, wow, and one of the girls thought it a good idea to sit with a fragile glass on the edge of the pool just in case some of the quieter guests had not noticed her. I can assure her we all had, several times, as she complained continually at a volume not really suitable for a five star hotel.
We think it is such a shame that these types of people bring their three star lives to a five star hotel and then feel the need to complain about it constantly .
I notice someone else has complained there was no chef to cook an egg for them. Get a grip.
We had hard boiled, scrambled and fried eggs to chose from as well as a fantastic range of cheese, salad, cold meat, bread, cereal, juice, sweet things and coffee or tea. Where do people who complain about an egg come from. I must have missed the security guards and did not realise Elton John was staying.
As already stated the food at all meal times was fantastic in taste and presentation.
We would go again tomorrow if we could get the time off work and would like to offer our congratulations to all the staff for a job well done in dealing with a small group of spoilt brits trying to spoil things for everyone else with their pathetic demands and loud and vulgar manners.
Thank you Mabely.
Our holiday was terrific and worth every penny.
(we stayed from 06/09/12 for 1 week)

Room Tip: If cost allowed I would pay for an upgrade to a sea view

We find it difficult this one. On one hand yes it is restful peaceful and service is great. On the other you are miles from any real life as we know it and so may appeal to some, but to us it was just a bit over remote. The rooms were fab and exceptionally clean. The towels, changed daily, were out of this world and would gladly buy some if I knew where. Bedding was changed daily. The TV only had basic channels so SKY a non starter. Food was good and desserts were the best but honestly had better at other non 5 star hotels. It did seem that the hotel was winding down its season. Evidence lay that show cooking should be had but nothing had. First dinner we had a cavery, that was it. Sorry food did disappoint. The pool area are great and drinks etc usual AI standard. Entertainment was a quiz a night, then back to books and kindles ! Weather was poor for first 2 days and the remoteness of the place was bleak so put us off but weather improved and the sun makes everything better. You must use the free shuttle bus to beach area and the small coves for swimming. Sunset views are spectacular and was a social event of the evening ! Hotel does provide pool towels and free safe. Bottles of water are all available on AI.

Room Tip: in the main block as some room were far to walk and lots of steps
