“Disaster”
Reviewed 20 August 2014

I stayed in the hotel for a week during the last week of July 2014. On
my last night I slipped over a decorative light bulb located in the
entrance of the hotel and severely broke my left arm wrist. I slipped
over because the lamp was not safely embedded to the ground. There is an
architectural fault with the design of the lamps. Further there is no
first aid or emergency procedure at the hotel which is an hour away
from the island center. There was nobody responsible to assist and the
junior night receptionist let alone deal with first aid requirements
could not even bring a bag of ice or a cold bottle of water to sooth
the swelling because the kitchen and the bar was locked. The hotel might
have many stars but it is definitely a disaster when it comes to
dealing with emergencies, health and safety procedures or customer
care. The hotel management is negligent as well as arrogant. Accidents
can be fatal in that hotel and travelers should take this into account
when making any bookings.

the most lovely people and 5 star hotel with 5 star food, wonderful remote location if you want real Greece in the midst of ancient olive groves, easy walk to real Greek village, free hotel minibus to 2 fab coves for lovely rock jumping and swimming in the sea with fabulously friendly frantic tavernas... fantastic sunset views and possibly the best on the island.
negatives... we had 3 rooms at the hotel and none of them had 5 star bathrooms, the room towels are all past their best (and I am fussy on hotel bathrooms so this might not bother you), and don't expect to be able to access wifi from your hotel room if you need to check your emails.... but despite this we had a wonderful time and the restaurant manager deserves to be poached by the best hotel in the world whilst Maria at the pool bar makes everyone smile every day... go all inclusive.. it is great value and a proper relaxing Greek holiday with lovely gentle entertainment in the evening and a great ambience.

Room Tip: it is an escape... a real Greek holiday. There are some lovely rooms, we had 3 rooms but would descr...

If someone wants to taste greek summer at it's best, Mabely Grand is the right choice. All-inclusive offers a great variety of excellent greek dishes, other drinks and snacks. The only thing missing is WIFI and Vodafone.

The see was promised to be just 800 meters away, but nowbody mentioned that it would be 800 meters down the cliff away!!! But don't worry, you won't need it! You will simply have no time for the see at this hotel. The surroundings are magnificient: ancient olive groves, true Greek rural life with old grannies chatting while you pass the streets of the nearby village. Excellent cousine though sometimes too salty, peace and quietness will compell you to forget everything. A big disappointment though was the arrival of some Greek guys from Ahtens Friday evening on an old broken car who were trying (quite unsuccessfully) to repair it until midnight right under our noses. The kids could not go to sleep. And cannot but mention turbulent sounds when someone in the building flushes the toilet (sorry). From 6 am you can enjoy the symphony of noises and water music)))

Room Tip: Main building offers better suits with luxurious atmosphere and furniture.

As we came out of arrivals we were met by Ilyas holding our name card and he took us to the hotel, which was a lovely change, as we usually get a tour of the area and our hotel is always the last stop, this facility was 48 euro for 2 people both ways, well worth it.

As the hotel came into view it was obviously grand and in a beautiful location, the reception area is dressed in marble splendour and very impressive.

The room was nice, clean and comfortable, the bed was firm, but we slept well, the tv had one english channel for the news, but I didn't want to hear any news so didn't use it.

It is the 1st all inclusive holiday I have been on and I would do it again as the drinks were quite expensive, the cocktails were 9 euros each and after 10 days it could have been a large bill.

Every mealtime we were greeted by a really helpful and friendly head waiter and shown to our table on the terrace, the food was fresh and well cooked with plenty of choice, having had a few hols in Greece we are used to Greek food being slightly salty and warm rather than hot, but that didn't spoil it, we enjoyed the freshly cooked food very much, for the first few days we were having breakfast, lunch and dinner, but we soon realised we were eating because it was there so we changed to breakfast and dinner and that was ample for us, snacks were available in reception from 11am.
The position of the hotel meant we could dine on the terrace with a wonderful view of the sea and hills and we had a sunset dinner every evening, it was so romantic. what did surprise me was how many people came to dinner dressed in shorts, t shirts and flip flops, sorry, just not suitable for 5 star dining, to be fair the head waiter did have a word with some and the next time they were dressed more appropriately.

We could book the free minivan to take us to various places during our stay and Ilyas the driver was friendly and informative, we went to Alykes, lovely sandy beach, warm, clear blue sea and a relaxed place to spend the day, 2 sunbeds and a palm leaf parasol was 5 euros per day, the Buca bar had Mr Kev waiting on, a smashing friendly, chatty fellow who brought us food and drink all day for a few euros tip.

We went to Vromi to catch the boat to go and see the famous shipwreck beach, be warned, you may have seen the stunning photos of the forlorn craft beached in a beautiful bay with turquoise waters lapping the gleaming white sands, 1 boat with 3 visitors enjoying the tranquility, idylic! er no! the reality.... the "white sand" was white stones, sharp painful ones so take beach shoes, the bay, whilst stunning is a breezeless suntrap, take a parasol. we were allowed one hour on that beach, in that time 10 boats of 30 arrived and 3 boats of 300, there was at least 1000 people on that beach and 15 boats, it was dangerous to swim with so much traffic, the place stank of diesel fumes and the constant blahting of the ships horns made it unbearable, the journey back however was very interesting as the captain took us to view many caves, aptly named "blue".

We hired a scooter for 4 days, 60 euros, well worth it, I haven't rode 2 wheels for 25 years, but soon got used to it, we toured all over the island, great fun, we even went to the neighbouring island of Kefalonia for a day, a 90 minute trip, but be warned if you want to go by car you have to go to Zakynthos in the south to book a ticket for the ferry from Porto St Nickolas in the north, you can take a chance and just turn up at the ferry, but pre-booked vehicles get on first, so if there is no space you don't go, it was full when we went.

Back to the hotel, evening entertainment was a bit sparce, with the odd quiz, but we did have a pianist and an operatic singer one night, the animation team chap Richard was very friendly and did all sorts of sporty stuff during the day including, yoga, aqua gymn and walking, he played the piano one evening and did a very good job of it.

There are 2 pools, the lower one has a bar for food and drink with free snack for A I customers it also tends to be where the kids gather, the other pool is at the main hotel and is always quiet and peaceful, the staff will bring you drinks, but usually about once an hour, so order double if you don't want to climb 36 steps to the bar, from the lower pool to the restaurant in the main hotel is 107 steps, so check where in the hotel you are booking. however they do have a golf buggy to take you back and forth if you ask.

Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our 10 day stay at the Mabely Grand and would highly recommend a holiday there, it is a lovely classy hotel with friendly staff and high standards, ok the bedroom wasn't quite 5 star, but for Greece it was.
2 friends have booked it on our recommendation, I hope they enjoy it as much as we did.

Poor point was the Wifi, the reception was not that good.

Room Tip: Rooms at the lower part of the hotel involve a long climb to the restaurant.

were what we wanted and that's exactly what we got. We stayed here in June and from the moment we arrived were made to feel welcome. We were up graded to a junior suite free of charge (809) and whilst furthest away from the main building (though still not that far) the views were amazing and it was very quiet. All the members of staff were very friendly and quick to help. Maria at the pool bar was wonderful and really made us feel like we there to eat, drink and relax. She even invited us to one of the local tavernas for their Greek night, where we met her family. Whilst we were there on an all inclusive basis, which I would recommend, we did enjoy the bbq food at the pool., which came with a standard 25% discount, like all the non all inclusive drinks and food. Richard from animation team was lovely, not too pushy and we even partook in the aqua aerobics "woohoo". Elizabeth at the farmshop was a mindful of local knowledge and made excellent Greek coffee. We also enjoyed her cooking demonstration. The food was lovely and whilst buffet style, with standard salads, soup and cold meats and fish, the hot food was freshly cooked in small batches and different every night, along with "show cooking", dishes freshly cooked in front of you. Yannis in the restaurant was a lovely chap with his little jokes and pleasant manner. All in all a great stay, nice and quiet as it was not yet the main holiday time, we were told it does get really busy, and somewhere we would return to. Thank you!

Room Tip: Garden rooms are very basic one room, ensuite with a patio area. Pool view rooms are just that. Juni...

On arrival you cant not be impressed with the reception area, welcoming staff and overall splendour. My room was down a steep hill and I was given a lift by means a small golf type buggy which was very useful.
I had a standard room(some have their own outdoor pool) and the room was clean but pretty basic considering my expectations on arrival.
There was a complimentary bottle of water, and a fridge which although non chargeable was empty.
The shower was over the bath but it drained ever so slowly and after a few minutes you were standing in two-three inches of water within the bath. There was also a bad stench coming from the drains.
The TV was cheap with poor quality sound and only one English Channel which was BBC world News.
There is no Internet available in the rooms nor is there a mobile phone signal.
Wi Fi is available but only within the reception area which is a bit of an uphill trek.
The staff are aware of the problem with wifi ,internet etc but keep saying that you are on holiday so just unwind.(I wasn't on holiday).
The All Inclusive package was an additional €45 per person per day.Slightly annoying was that if you were in the lower pool area to have your lunch you had to go up to the restaurant area at the main building. The Pool Bar did snacks etc but these were charged extra.
Other reviews have been critical agianst the cliental who use the lower pool area, totally disagree and I actually wonder if that reviewer bothered to walk down the hill to experience the lower pool area.
Daily entertainment was poor with a rather annoying Animation Team.
The staff were very good and communicative at all times.
There is very little for kids to do. A very small park area and the pools is about it. There is nothing nearby so a car is essential.
The hotel claims also to have a shuttle service to the airport. This is pot luck as the minibus seems to get priority to take guests to the beaches and places of interest throughout the day. The airport transfer is also chargeable. A Taxi to the airport is around €48 each way.
Food was okay but very repetitive. I dont know what part of a turkey a turkey roll is from but it was tasteless. Pasta always had to much oil and garlic. Breakfast from the heat warming devices was always luke warm. The chef who I assumed was there to make omelettes just stood there and kept pointing to a tray of omelettes he had made earlier which were also cold.
Overall a nice place to stay but starting to age and needs attaention in both the rooms and guest experiences. A hotel without wifi or mobile siganl is poor by todays expectations especially for the kids.

Room Tip: Not to near the pool but ideally looking out to the sea with no obstructions(trees etc) to take adva...
