“Excellent from every aspect, especially the food!”
Reviewed 21 April 2014

Just spent the Easter weekend here and we were very impressed. All of the staff were very welcoming, helpful and efficient. Garden area was very well tended, lots of parking near to the hotel and a children's play area. Lots of comfortable seating available in the reception area and bar and plenty of dining space. The bar I think, was a little expensive, but we booked dinner, bed and breakfast and this proved to be an amazing bargain! Breakfast was quite typical but very delicious, especially the pancakes and sausages with eggs cooked to order by the very attentive chef. The dinner was fabulous on each evening, three courses were included and there was sufficient choice for each course for the three days. Each course was obviously prepared on site and was quite delicious and to a very high standard - exceptionally pleased with every item we ate - every ingredient could be tasted and cooked to perfection. Plenty of space in the room which was very clean and maintained well, despite being very busy and close to a train track, there was no internal noise in the room. We used the gym and pool daily and it was quite sufficient for our needs and both were exceptionally clean at all times. There was a lot more offered at this hotel that we didn't use but based on the standard of everything else I would only expect the highest standard. As a bonus all the premiership football games were televised in the bar but not in a manner that would have disturbed those not wishing to watch. All-in-all an excellent weekend. Well done and thank you to everyone at Holiday Inn Colchester. (Worth becoming a member of Holiday Inn to get free 4 hours of wifi)

I booked to stay here on Good Friday as a trip for my husband and myself as my daughters were away on a trip.
My family live nearby and we could easily visit them.

We were greeted warmly on arrival, told that we had been upgraded to an executive room, lovely suprise. Check in was very smooth and efficient.

We went to our room and on the way were greeted by various staff .. nice to see and all seemed happy in their work.
Our room was gorgeous very clean bed comfy with lovely pillows, bathroom with bathrobes slippers towels and complimentary items..lovely massage shower.
There were complimentary waters and mars bars and obv tea and coffee. There is a mini fridge but if you have items you are billed after exit.

We dined in the restaurant for dinner and had gammon ham, double egg and chips... this meal was beautiful .gorgeous chips and ham .. enough for two people. ..

We had a decent nights sleep.. there was a wedding celebration on during the day and evening .but no noise was heard from any guest after 12 and we slept extremely well.

We enjoyed our full english breakfast, eggs cooked to perfection and to order, and everything was perfect.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay tho we didnt get to swim in pool as I have a family member in hospital and had to spend time with them, but fully intend to stay again .. with my daughters. Thank you

This is third time we have stayed here over the last 3-4 years and will stay again in the future for the following reasons.
The hotel is easy to get to, just off the A12 five-ten minutes drive outside the centre of Colchester, close to the seaside resorts of Walton, Frinton, Clacton along with Constable counrty close by and there is ample free parking.
The staff are very friendly, requests dealt with very quickly, the restaurant food at breakfast and dinner is of a very good standard and portions are plentiful, the waiting staff very attentif, polite and courteous. My son, wife and i had steaks for dinner which were cooked in the exact way asked along with being tender and presented well, the choice of wines was good as well, the bar is at the side of the restaurant, small but cosy witha couple of t.v's showing sport/news where you can order a good selection of bar food up to 11.00pm There is and outdoor area when the weather is nice to have a drink and relax along with a small childrens play area, the hotel is well geared up for families with rooms with double beds+double sofa beds,my teenage son is a big lad and my only gripe is the hotel does not offer a room with two double beds which is a shame but would not deter us from returning.
The best thing the hotel offers is a health club which has a 25mtr swimming pool divided into two, one half for lane swimming, the other for free swimming, paddling etc, there is a jaccuzi,Turkish steam room and in each male/female changing room a Finnish sauna along with a gym which has the usual gym equipment all available for members and hotel guests, towels are provided, there are lockers(require £1 coin refundable when finished) and showers with soap/body wash dispencers in the changing rooms. The club offers spa treatments as well so if all you only want to do is relax and be pampered this hotel can provide it.
There are no amenities near the hotel so a car is essential to venture/explore the area around the hotel, we came to visit famliy in the local area but had some unexpected fab R & R for ourselves.

Room Tip: The hotel has two levels/floors with no lifts ask for a ground floor room is stairs pose a problem f...

Travelled from Exeter, not advise able on a Friday afternoon/evening.
We had 3rooms but one mine was on the second floor and there is no lift so reception very kindly upgraded it to ground floor Executive room. The staff were really friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble, the food in the restaurant was very good and the eat all you want breakfast was excellent. I would recommend this hotel to anyone and will stay there again when necessary

Room Tip: Make sure you book ground floor if you have trouble with stairs

Our family party of 7 stayed over the weekend. My husband and I both use Holiday Inns / Express when travelling for work, but this has to be one of the best. All the staff from reception to restaurant, cleaning staff and the leisure suite staff were at all times friendly, helpful and accommodating. Nothing was too much trouble and it made for a great atmosphere.

The rooms were extremely clean and comfortable and we had a great nights sleep.

At meal times staff were attentive and patient (we took ages to decide about food as we were so busy chatting). The only slight reserve I have is the limited choice of menu for healthy options / vegan e.g there was no side salad option for a main meal. Having said that, one of our party was a vegan and the chef adapted one of the meals on offer to cater for this - having checked the ingredients with the vegan first.

Overall I would highly recommend this hotel and would love to return.

We were up from Devon for a family 80th birthday and my father booked 3 rooms for the seven of us. On their arrival my Father, who has mobility issues, explained that as there was no lift the room he had been given would be a problem and immediately they were upgraded to a ground floor room, no fuss made at all! Our rooms on the first floor were lovely and even though we didnt ask for them to be cleaned we had a bag left outside replenishing our teas, coffes etc. The breakfast was fantastic probably too much choice if anything, my 9 year old took an age deciding between croissants or "make your own pancakes". We ate in the restaurant on the Friday evening and, as with every other aspect of the stay, the service was wonderful. Would I recommend it? Yes I would infact I wish there were more places in our area that gave this high level of service!

Room Tip: There are no lifts, bear that in mind when booking.

We came to Colchester for a birthday party and chose this hotel for it's vicinity. We have used Holiday Inns before but this is the best so far. The welcome of the desk staff, who were under pressure at the time, was faultless. The room was very clean and had all the facilities that you would expect.

The one negative comment would be breakfast time. I think the hotel was nearing capacity and at peak breakfast time there were not enough staff to cope. Queued for a good 5 minutes waiting to be seated. The table was quickly wiped. More juice had to be fetched, glasses had run out, fruit had run out, even hot plates had run out. On a chilled Sunday it didn't matter to me but if you were in a hurry it would have been annoying.

That said, would I come back and recommend? Yes
