My boyfriend and I stayed in about ten different places in our visit to mexico-- some places were definitely questionable but this place takes the cake as far as a crappy place to stay. We arrived shortly before the part owner left for the night (this town closes up early-and we wanted to get checked in so we could go get some dinner before it was too late) and so we were relatively brief with our inspection before deciding that we would stay there. It looked clean and therefore I didn't suspect anthing. I had no idea we were in for a night of hell!. When we returned to settle in we discovered that the air conditioner produced air that SMELLED LIKE CAT PEE!!! So we try to open the windows to cool down, and unbeknownst to us there is some kind of sewage problem in back of the hotel so when we open the windows air that SMELLS LIKE SEWAGE fills the room. We try to turn on the fan and it swings so unbelievably wildly we were sure it was going fly off the ceiling-- and it thumped and whirred super loudly . Despite these setbacks we got in bed to go to sleep and then we discovered the real kicker--THE BEDDING AND MATTRESS REEKED OF MOLD!!!! So badly that we couldn't sleep. In desperation we tried taking the bedding off-- it was hot anyway, but the matress was just as bad smelling as the bedding!! We tried to find the part owner's room in the hotel because we thought that she said that she lived at the hotel. We knocked on the door that we thought was to her apartment, but it turned out to be another patron's room. When we apologized and explained to the man why we had disturbed him he offered us his blanket. He said he was way too hot and that he had put it aside anyway. In desperation and gratitude we accepted it. We put the 'new' blanket on the top of the matress and then we placed our bathroom towels on top to try and keep the smell at bay-- but we were still overwhelmed by it. My boyfriend is NOT sensitive or picky, and even he was driven crazy by the smell! Hours went by and we seriously considered sleeping on the linoleum floor or even out in our car. We turned the super loud fan on to help circulate the air. Somehow we eventually were so exhausted that we managed to fall asleep despite the mold and the unstable, loudly knocking fan. When we got up, exhausted, a few hours later, we put our moldy-smelling clothes in a seperate bag and both showered ( we smelled like mildew). We spent an hour making calls, trying to track down the part owner to talk to her about our experience. When we got a hold of the maid she said that the woman lived in cancun and that it we would take an hour for her to get there!! We explained that we would have to be on our way to the airport before then. The part owner showed up about 45 minutes later and went about busying herself taking care of other things and when we tried to approach her she said that we should have " checked everything before we rented the room"! Really? We should have known to get into bed and sniff it to check for mold? At first she tried to deny culpability for anything, but then when we took her to our room and showed her the air conditioner she admitted it smelled like pee. When we told her about the sewage, she aknowledged the problem and said that that was why she was out her so early. when we told her the about the bedding she tried to deny it, but then she smelled them and her face drew back in surprise and disgust (which she then tried to blow off ). However after further discussion she said that she had ordered new matresses, but that they hadn't come yet!! She told us that we should have tried to call her last night. We told her we thought that she said that she lived her so we tried to find her apartment, to whch she gave us a stern lecture for disturbing her other guests! We told her it was a mistake and that the patron was happy to help- he insisted on it. She seemed to ignored this. We also told her that we didn't have her number and she said it was on a phone downstairs outside of the locked lobby. Had she explained this to us the night before? NO! We told her we only got a few hours of sleep. she said she would talk it over with her co-owner. We told her we were late getting to the airport and that we would settle for a half refund. In the end she only gave us 100 pesos back (because of the smelly air conditioner) out of the 450 went spent! What a lousy way to spend our last night on vaca. LESSON LEARNED: check everything-- even the bedding smell- and know how to get a hold of the manager/owner at all hours!!
