“Excellent Romantic Anniversary”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 July 2008

We celebrated our 4th anniversary and have never experienced such a romantic atmosphere as we did with Excellence. We were greeted at check-in with a glass of champagne. We were pampered and catered to, never wanting for anything. The room was exquisite with rose petals on the bed, luxurious bath robes and slippers, bowl of fresh fruit and bottle of champagne on the table. We thoroughly enjoyed the in-room jacuzzi along with breakfast in the room whenever we so desired. The bellmen were very informative and courteous and they remembered our names throughout our stay. Our main bellman was Jose and he often stopped to greet us throughout our visit. The restaurants offered a variety of delectable food with most time, more than we could consume. We also experienced a variety of atmospheres like French, Mexican, Mediterranean, Asian, etc . They do stick to their dress code requirements which is quite nice. The waiters were friendly, courteous and very attentive. The night of our anniversary, they placed rose petals on our table which made for even a more romantic evening. During the 4 day stay, we heard 3 different music groups to include caribbean, mariachi, latin/rock along with an awesome violinist in the Martini Bar. The beach was beautiful and there was always space to lay out. Waiters again catered, assuring we had adequate beverages throughout the entire time we were out in the sun. Walking on the beach at night was simply beautiful. Excellence is spread out over a large area so you never feel like it is crowded even though there were alot of people there in June. If you are looking for a romantic getaway with adults only and everything all-inclusive, we highly recommend Excellence. We also recommend Go Away Travel who booked our trip for us and did an excellent job. Kudos to Brenda Troy. We also want to recommend using Olympus Tours who handled our transportation from airport to hotel along with a Cancun tour. We are looking forward to booking another trip next year, with a longer stay.

Recently spent a week at this resort and loved every minute of it. Food, staff and facilities were all excellent. We had zero complaints for the entire stay and are planning on going back sometime soon. We also booked some watersports from the activities reps located there. The "Jungle Tour" offered by several companies is a waste of time. There is no jungle involved and the snorkeling time you get is not worth the effort. The reef they take you to is swarmed and you are forced to wear a life jacket which makes seeing anything somewhat difficult. On the flip side we did two SCUBA dives to Cozumel which were both excellent. We had photos taken by the photographer at the hotel, Mauricio Clayton. His work was excellent and he had fair prices. He gave us digital copies of all the finished photos including a waiver to the rights for reproduction. We would highly recommend him for terrific pictures of your trip to Excellence.

My Honeymoon Nightmare in Mexico--Please do not stay here! This has happened to too many people here!!

We booked our trip through GOGO and the Excellence was very highly recommended. Before leaving for the Excellence Riviera Cancun we were reading www.tripadvisor.com everyday and couldn’t wait for the trip. We’d see about 10 good reviews and one bad. No big deal we thought, you can’t please everyone. Well I’m hear to tell you that we had a terrible experience and realize after being robbed that you have “no rights in Mexico”. I will never go there again!

We left for our honeymoon bright and early Sat. June 28, 2008 and we arrived in Mexico at about 11:30 a.m..We were so excited and ready to have the time of our lives. We were greeted with a drink and cold towel by the Excellence staff about 12:30 p.m..The grounds were beautiful and we couldn’t wait to see our room. We were told check in was for 3:00 p.m. In the meantime we decided to grab some lunch at the Barcelona Restaurant were we were asked for our room number and waited on by Franke. We had very good service and my husband dug in his pocket after lunch pulled out his “money” and tipped Franke $5.00.

We went back up to the lobby at 3:00 p.m. and Christopher brought up our luggage and again very grateful for everyone’s help we tipped him $3. Once at our room we were told it would be ready at 4pm. No problem we’d go sit at the pool. We had a wonderful day the first day there. Our room was beautifully decorated with roses and swan towels. Man we thought “this is service”. I was truly overwhelmed with everything.

Sunday June 29th..Day two-- our nightmare began..We woke up early and couldn’t wait to relax and enjoy the grounds. We were served a romantic breakfast with mimosas in our room for 7 am. We got dressed and ready to go to the beach and pools. We placed all our valuables in the safe including $2000 cash that we planned on spending on spa treatments, excursions, and souvenirs for our children. This is all the money we had. We locked everything in the “SAFE” with our code because that is what you are told to do when you check in and we left the room at 7:45 am. (Matter of fact in the hotel service’s book in your room there it states under “SAFETY DEPOSIT BOX”: “To insure the safety of your documents and valuables you will find a safety deposit box within your room at no additional cost. Please contact your Host if you need additional information or assistance. We remind you that the hotel is not responsible for the loss of any items that were not stored within the correctly closed safety deposit box.”)

Our day was tons of fun and laughs. We started out at the beach relaxing and headed over to the main pool area where we sat out by the bar on lounge chairs. We hung out with Jean Paul, an employee and 2 other couples, Jill and Dave Lamb from England who stayed in room 3004 and Terry and Diana Knox from Illinois in room 2104. Jean Paul was very nice, he even took some pictures of us, one at 2:15 and the next at 2:17. (by the way, my camera has the time programmed in it). At about 2:15 or so we decided we were hungry and would go get a bit to eat at the Lobster House. We got there just in time before they closed and was greated by Antonio Garcia who asked our room number (by the way they write done the room # and the time you eat on a log or type it into the phone..The hotel knows where you are at all times).

While we were eating someone had gone in our room, opened our safe and took the $2000 cash out of our safe. But our proof means nothing when you stay in Mexico because everything will be covered up by the time we meet with the Managers of the hotel. Our pictures by the pool say 2:17, the pictures in the restaurant say 2:35 pm. Not to mention, Mr. Antonio Garcia remembers serving us and Jean Paul remembers taking pictures of us and yes we were sitting with the two other couple all while we were being robbed .

We returned to our room at about 4 pm and took a nap. When we awoke at 7pm to get ready for dinner we noticed our safe open. We latter would notice our “x-box” also open to the outside of the room. This is a door that you put your dirty dishes in and the maids are able to open it from the outside and take dishes out of it but it should be locked on the outside and inside of you r room.

When noticed the money missing we immediately phoned the front desk and was told security was on the way (a joke!). Security Guards, Fredy and Carlos, along with Panfi from housekeeping came up. They plugged a machine into the safe, opened it and got all the information out. This machine told them all the times the safe was open and by who. They also plugged the machine into the card slot on the door and extracted all the information out of the door as to who was in our rooms at what time. We were told that “THEY KNEW WHO WAS IN OUR ROOM AND WOULD NEED TO QUESTION HIM IN THE MORNING BECAUSE HE WAS OFF OF WORK and we would need to see Mr. Carlos Lopez in the morning at extension 2811”. At 10 am we went to the front desk to see Mr. Lopez, AKA head of Security, to find out about the investigation. All the information was lost and they would need to go back up to the room to get it again. When I questioned Mr. Lopez about Mr. Panfi saying they knew the gentleman that was in the room, he responded that they had searched his house and would need to do so again today. OK, sure! I asked to see the information from the safe. It showed “locked with code at 7:38 am”, opened at 2:26 pm, closed at 7:37 pm”. We were not in our room at 2:26, there it was, now just find out who came in the room through the door and you have your thief, right. Not in Mexico. We were then told to give him 2 hours and he’d come back to the room to meet with us with information on the “investigation“. We received a message from Alan, the concierge, at 1:55 pm saying he needed to push back the meeting til 4pm.

Enough was enough, we went up to the front desk and asked for a meeting with Mr. Gregor Beck, the hotel manager. We were told at first he wasn’t in. Well I knew better because I had just spoken to another hotel employee who insured he was there. Sure Mr. Gregor would look at all the proof and at least be willing to help us, right. WRONG..Even offering us a rebate of two of the 4 nights would of helped us with all the trouble and stress we had been under. We walked over to The Grill and right after sitting down with some chips the front desk had found us and came got us to meet with Mr. Gregor. (They know where you are at all times!!)

In the meeting was Mr. Gregor, his female assistant, Gabriel with Olympic Tours and Mr. Lopez whose blood pressure must have been very hight because he was sweating. It was all a waste of my time, all they could say is they’d bring us to the police in Mexico only 15 minutes away. No thank you. What’s the point, they had covered all the information up. By this time, they had computer printouts saiding we closed our safe at 7:38 am, WE opened our door at 2:22 with our key, and we opened our safe at 2:26 pm. Our proof meant nothing and no one was willing to help us. Not the manager Mr. Gregor Beck, not the security, not no one. Everything was COVERED up. Even though we had pictures with the times, the Lobster House’s Mr. Garcia who waited on us at that time, and 2 other couples who were with us. Nothing mattered Mr. Gregor truly doesn’t care about his guest.

I hate to speculate but I believe everyone was in on this theft and when there is theft the management tells the security to cover the tracks so there resort can remain a 5 star resort.

There is no way we as a couple could have been in two places at one time. Someone opened our room door at 2:22 pm and our safe at 2:26 while we were at the pool and restaurant. Bottom line. This theft ruined our whole trip, we were paranoid thinking if we pushed it to far we’d be poisoned by our food so didn’t want to eat or something worst.

Thank God I’m home and I hope that the Lord takes care of these people who ruined our trip.

We decided to book the excellence over a couple of other resorts in the area, i must say we were not let down in any way by this hotel. We stayed at the hotel for 15 nights and feel that we got a good feeling for the place. The beach is towed every morning, and there is always something going on. The service from the staff was not just good or up to standard it was excellent! the hotel also offers two free trips into Cancun every week which is a 20 min drive away. Also worth a visit is Playa Del Carmen, 5th Avenue, its a long street full of shops and bars. The room was very comfortable with a nice private sunbathing area (swim up suite) i really liked having this area. The spa is nothing short of amazing well worth a trip and i don't normally do spa's and the likes, we did the couples millie massage and it was just brilliant. I cant really say anything bad about the hotel or the staff. The Spice was our favourite resteraunt. I would recomend this hotel to anyone! well worth a visit, and i think i might even go back! that would be a first.

We were at the Excellence June 4-11 and had an absolutely perfect time. It was our tenth resort trip and we traveled with relatives visiting for the first time. This is the perfect resort for us: 30 minutes from the airport, no tired little ones crying, beautiful just the right size grounds, great rooms with lovely views, wonderful food, warm and welcoming staff, and lots of little extras that made it worth paying about a third more than we usually do.

Loved not having to make reservations at the restaurants. I also loved not having a buffet at night and getting to visit all the specialty restaurants instead of being limited to three visits in a seven night stay which is typical. We thought the food was wonderful and never had a bad meal. Enjoyed the Chez the most and Spice second. This is the first time we’ve had lobster at a resort without having to pay extra and it tasted great to my Midwest palate. Plan to dress for dinner…half the fun of resort life is getting all the sand out of your ears and sprucing up for the evening.

Loved not having a plastic bracelet messing up my outfits! Loved the little shelf above the vanity. Loved the turn down service and fresh towels (happened about ½ the nights). Loved the jetted tub. If you’re a reader, be aware the lighting is very dim in the room.

Loved the spa. I’ve never visited a spa at a resort before thinking I need the spoiling worse when I’m NOT in paradise, but this one is so stunning you just want to be a part of it. I chose the marine scrub with the marine circuit before…heaven! Do the marine circuit with someone and it’s twice as fun. One thing I don’t remember reading is: take a dry suit or some shorts to the spa so you don’t have to put on that wet suit afterwards and ruin the delicious smell on your skin!

Loved the yoga class at the top of the spa and the massage class (you have to take your own partner). Not so impressed with the Pilates class. Although I‘ve done yoga regularly for years, I had never taken a Pilates class before and can’t think it’s a typical class. I made it through but it was a killer…definitely not for beginners and was very sore for a couple of days. Loved the kitchen tour…Leticia and Fernanda were a hoot! You snack your way through the tour so plan lunch accordingly.

I’m probably one of those rare people who actually look forward to the exuberant dance and lip syncing shows with the great costumes so common at resorts but these are definitely not up to par especially with everything else being so outstanding. They were fine, though, and the lovely cushy seats after a hard day in the lounger were heaven! The dance band night was my favorite.

Not a big drinker but loved the Rose’ wine with dinner and was happy to see that Coca Diete tasted almost the same as my beverage of choice! The first few years in the Caribbean the Diet Coke always tasted flat to me. We kicked ourselves when we got home and remembered we forgot to try the drink in the coconut. It’s offered daily around lunch for an hour.

It was oddly windy the whole week we were there more like spring break weather than June. We’re beach bums but headed to the beautiful pools after lunch when we got tired of fighting it. With all the beautiful foliage, the wind wasn’t even noticeable there. Otherwise the weather was beautiful. Loved, loved, LOVED the sun beds.

If you have trouble getting around ask for Spa building 1 or 2. We were in the top of Spa 4 and it had not a hint of a musty smell or a single bug or ant…but it was a hike to both the beach and the lobby. The resort is a little larger than it appears and there are no trams but we all need to walk off all that food anyway! I finally ditched my heels the last night, though. We didn’t upgrade and got great toiletries, robes and slippers, etc.

Only left the resort twice. First, we took a taxi to Puerto Juarez in Cancun and the ferry to Isla Mujeres. It was my fourth trip there and is one of my favorite places in the world. Watching the water turn from blue to aqua on the way over alone is worth the trip. It was everyone else’s first visit so took them on Map Chick’s Cando Map Isla Mujeres tour. You can buy these maps for $8 online (www.cancunmap.com/), rent a golf cart, and she has a perfect day outlined in it for those who prefer doing their own tours. My husband was so happy to finally taste the Tic-n-Xic fish at Lancheros I’d raved about for years—and I usually don’t even care for fish. I tried to recreate it at home but it just wasn’t the same. As usual, the quaint cemetery with the pirate’s grave was a hit. For some reason, we always miss the shell house (remember seeing it on Extreme Homes?)! Taxi was $37 each way (a little more on the way home after an hour’s visit to Market 28 in Cancun), golf cart rental $40 (with lots of not worth the time bargaining but my husband loves it…regular $45), and roundtrip ferry for four was $30. The Tic-n-Xic was about $8 per person plus drinks (the strongest best Margaritas ever!). So for about $50 each we had a great day out (not counting the jewelry purchases at Market 28!!!!).

The only other outing was a long walk for snorkeling to Puerto Morales. We hired a boat off the beach for $25 each for the four of us—always a little risky but too many bad memories of being packed like sardines with a hundred other people on a tour. I think the way it works is the guy who speaks the best English drums up the business and then passes you to the guy with the boat who speaks no English at all! Anyway, it worked out fine but was so windy that it seemed like work rather than fun. We opted out of the second stop and were so thankful he dropped us off right back at the resort and we could flop gratefully back into our loungers. We love snorkeling and have religiously hauled our own equipment back and forth each trip after those first few times of using a mouthpiece directly out of the watery bottom of a tour boat. With the new airline weight requirements I’m going to just take my mask and mouthpiece from now on. That should save some weight and room in the suitcase and still do away with the gross out factor!

Email me with questions at thelears@tri-lakes.net. I honestly can’t imagine being unhappy at this resort. I think I have a great life in the states but can’t even fathom what the lives of people who think the Excellence is somehow lacking must be like. Maybe I’m not discriminating enough…it’s pretty much, give me a beach and some turquoise water and life is good…but come on, this place is AWESOME.

My husband and I stayed at the Excellence Riviera Cancun May 10-May 18 to celebrate our 3 year anniversary and his birthday. We had the most wonderful time at that resort.

My husband and I stayed in room #2104 (spa view). The room was very beautiful. The floors were gorgeous; the bed was dressed very pretty (especially with the towel swans and rose petals everywhere); the shower and whirlpool were huge! The eating area and balcony were spacious. Our room was cleaned daily; turn-down service came daily. Our fridge was re-stocked daily; they even accommodated a request for less beer, more Coke. One thing I didn’t like was a musty smell that the room had. The hotel provides incense and we would just burn those when we were in the room but I wish I had brought in a plug-in air freshener. Another thing that I didn’t really like was the coarseness of the towels, robes, and bedding; I am sure it was probably from the use of starch but roughness in the material did not help our sunburns! Other than that, it was wonderful!

The resort itself was beautiful. The landscape was amazingly well kept; we would see landscapers out daily doing maintenance. The resort was always kept very clean. There was an abundance of fountains and statues everywhere. The detail put into every building in that resort was exquisite. The pools were nice, all shallow though. What I didn’t expect was the two salt water pools, which includes the lazy river. Our favorite pool was the freshwater pool at the middle of the resort that leads to the inside of the spa. That pool, once in the spa, has four bubble beds (nice massage), four waterfall type shower heads that if you position your back at gives a great massage, and two pockets that are supposed to have whirlpool type jets (which were not on when we visited). Also, even though it was really hot, we dipped into the beautiful hot tub by the spa… it was very relaxing.

The food for the most part was wonderful.
-I didn’t think it would be, however my favorite restaurant was The Grill. My husband and I ate there about three times; twice for dinner, once for lunch. The steak was always cooked so wonderful and the chicken was magnificent. They also carried these wonderful tiny chocolate cakes that were so delicious.
-Our second most favorite restaurant was Spice. We ended up meeting a great group of people dining at one of their hibachi grills.
-Agave had great food as well. The night we dined there, they had this wonderful mariachi play. There was a female singer who had the most amazing voice. We ended up staying and watching their set well after we were done with our meal.
-We had lunch at Oregano and it was nice. We had a pleasant meal at their patio setting.
- Most mornings, we had breakfast at Barcelona. There was a great selection of food in a buffet setting. They featured made to order omelets and eggs, and fresh fruit. Anything you can think of for breakfast, they had it there.
- We only had lunch at the lobster house which had no lobster. I had buffalo chicken wraps and my husband had a cheeseburger. We both enjoyed our food.
- Toscana. That place we did not enjoy all too much. Their minestrone soup was very thin and lacked flavor. I had their mushroom risotto which was good but not fine dining good. My husband had a lamb dish (I do not recall the name) that he did not enjoy at all. Later on that night he felt a bit sick. He didn’t think much of it but we spoke to a few other couples that had the same account after visiting that restaurant.
-Chez Isabelle is a restaurant we never visited. We did a lot of sight seeing and just never got the chance to have a meal there. Most everyone else we talked to had a great experience there.
-Room Service was great! It was nice to be able to have food brought to you on lazy days. A tip for those going on early sight seeing activities: call room service before you go to bed and order breakfast for the next morning. Tell them you want it delivered at a specific time, and have them leave it in your “x-box” (a food cabinet for a more private delivery). Out favorite dishes were the Mexican breakfast, the fajita quesadilla, and their tacos.

Activities were good; they had multiple at the resort but the only things we tried were archery (they really need new arrows), the complementary shopping trip to Cancun, and ceramic painting. However, the amount of activities they provide daily are vast. It’s too bad we didn’t get to do more.

The service was impeccable. The staff was always very courteous, appreciative, and respectful; they seriously would go above and beyond to meet your needs. Towards the end of our stay, there was many staff that remembered our names or remembered what drinks we enjoyed.

Any negatives I can we saw really was just some rude guests. The worst experience was during our last few days there. Some guests arrived (about a group of six) who were very loud and obnoxious. They were all intoxicated causing quite a stir when males were carrying topless females on their shoulders ‘chicken-fighting.’ They left the area they occupied filthy, were extremely rude and condescending to the staff, and were just overall unpleasant. The area of the pool they occupied got very uncomfortable to lounge at because they made it so loud. We chose this resort specifically because it is NOT in Cancun and it is [mature] ADULTS ONLY. We truly didn’t expect to see people there to ‘party.’

Also, there were people that would reserve loungers (usually more than one) as early as 6am; we saw most of them doing it while taking our morning strolls on the beach. Then we’d return later to see that these ‘reserved’ loungers were still not being used, usually leaving us nowhere to relax. Also, because most everyone who reserved did it using two or more towels, the towel stations were constantly empty and it would be almost impossible to find a towel when getting out of the beach or pool. The staff could not wash and get new towels because they were all ‘reserving’ a seat not being used. There were two days that we not being get a towel all day.

Overall, I love this place. My husband and I cannot wait to visit again!

My mother-in-law and I just returned from a stay at ERC. We were aware when we planned to stay at this resort that it was more of a Honeymooners resort but were not interested in the hustle and bustle of a singles or family resort. Don't let the other negative reviews scare you! It is a well groomed, beautiful resort. The staff works very hard to please every guest. We encountered nothing but service staff who were eager to please. We found the daily "Excellence News" to be helpful AND accurate. We did the kitchen tour. Wow! You could eat off the floors in the kitchen! They make ALL of their own pastries, breads, baked goods and desserts! Yum! They don't re-serve food. Anyone who complains about bland food from the Agave (Mexican) Restaurant simply did not bother to use the delicious verde sauce or any other. They wash all fruits and veggies in a special iodine solution. Truly they go to extreme measures to assure no visit from the GI bug. The food in the restaurants was like everywhere else. Sometimes average -- sometimes exceptional. Room service food is very good -- service is quick usually about 30 minutes. We enjoyed a swimout room with a spa view. We loved the hammock and our own lounge chairs. The spa was beautiful and a great value considering you get an hours worth of the hydro circuit in addition to which ever service you choose. We heard nothing of theft, heard no other guests complaining. We saw and encountered only happy travelers. Occupancy was about 90% while we were there but there was only a short wait for dinner once at Lobster house (It seats fewer people at a time) we didn't wait for any other meals. We couldn't believe they were so close to capacity because we felt that there was plenty of room for everyone. Also, on the kitchen tour we learned the staff to guest ratio is just short of 1:1.
We would return and have already told others about this resort.
