“Excellence is excellent!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 July 2014 via mobile

This was our 2nd stay at Excellence Riviera Cancun & our 4th trip back to the area. We can't say enough wonderful things about this resort! If you are looking for a 5 star quality resort Excellence this is your place. A lot of resorts claim to be 5 star, this place truly is. The rooms & grounds are clean, the bathrooms are huge, the service is impeccable & the food & drinks are abundant! The food is not all "fine" dining quality but keep in mind that most all-inclusive resorts are similar in that sense. They offer a ton of food to a ton of people round the clock so it's not all gonna be to your liking. We found things we liked and stuck to them. It was nice to have the option of room service anytime of day & the menu was pretty expansive. Since the last time we visited in 2011 they definitely upped their game. Guests now can dine at all of the restaurants w/o having to make reservations & there are way more options on the room service menu. They also provide full bottles of liquor in the rooms ranging from tequila, rum, vodka & red wine. We stayed from Thursday 7/3 to Monday 7/7. We only had the chance to see one show & it was "ok". I recall in the past the shows were pretty good. The one we got to see was " Rock and pop" and was just a bunch or guys breakdancing & some tricks w/ hula hoops & crystal balls. Meh.... We also opted to try hookah while we watched the show. Boy was the lady in the cigar shop a trip! She was super busy and made it known in her attitude! Won't be doing that again. Other than that, stay was terrific! The service in the main bar "Martini" was great. I forget the bartenders name, but he knew everyone & provided service w/ a smile at all times & never left our drinks empty. The Mexican hospitality can't be beaten in my opinion. They know how to do all-inclusive right. I know there are a ton of 5 star resorts out there. I'm sure they are nice but this place I can vouch for. It's beautiful, it's peaceful & the service is great. Can't go wrong!!

We went to the Sian Ka'an adults only resort in Playa Carmen in 2013 and absolutely loved it, but decided to try the Excellence Riviera Cancun based on amazing Trip Advisor reviews and a recommendation from the agent at Blue Bay Holidays (Caribbean Warehouse). We were not disappointed in any way, as the Excellence was another level of luxury.

We had private taxi transfers to and from Cancun airport which took 20-25 minutes. On arrival, we were impressed with the grand entrance and were greeted with a glass of fizz. We had a bit of a false start as the swim-up rooms we had booked were not available due to overbooking. We were offered a $150 per room credit and after making it clear that we weren't happy we were given a voucher for a romantic couples' dinner on the beach which was usually an extra $100.

The initial disappointment was quickly forgotten as we were shown to our rooms. They were spectacular (see photo with this review). After satisfying ourselves that the swim-up rooms were actually no real advantage for us, we settled in for drinks at the Martini Bar which was very plush and relaxing. They have a good range of cocktails and martinis (as you would expect) and the bar staff are happy to make anything you would like to order, using premium branded spirits.

We then too a walk around the resort and realised that it is very extensive, with beautiful pools running throughout the complex. It seemed that there was always a quiet area where you could laze by the poolside on a wooden lounger and if you were luck you could use a free cabana to shelter from the sun. It was 30 degrees + every day so some shade was very welcome. The pools appeared to have no chemical taste or smell - just crystal clear, ultra clean water. There were plenty of foam li-lo beds so we enjoyed floating around in the sunshine.

A waitress would wander around during the day to bring you drinks from the bar whenever you wanted. We used to tip them 20 pesos (around 90 pence) or a dollar each time - not much, but over the course of a day by the pool it added up. We noticed that several people chose not to tip and there was no expectation of a tip from the staff, but they were grateful when one was given.

The sea was a short walk from the main hotel lobby. It was a lovely sandy beach and there were nice walks along the shore from both sides. The sea itself was very choppy, which was the only aspect which we felt was better at the Sian Ka'an, where there were floating barriers to create safe, clear bathing areas. The reason for the choppy waters at the Excellence was that the world's 2nd largest barrier reef is a short distance from the shore, so there were plenty of options for boat trips, snorkelling and scuba diving on the reef.

But where the Excellence really excels is with its restaurants - a choice of 8 a la carte options, all with lovely settings, great service and lovely food. We would highly recommend the Basmati (Indian), Chez Isabelle (French) and the Agave (Mexican). Chez Isabelle in particular was amazing - as good as anything we have eaten in France!

The Lobster House was always very popular, but we actually found it to be the least appealing as the staff were very rushed due to the constant stream of diners and the lobster tails really weren't that great in my opinion. But it seems to be a real selling point that guests can eat unlimited lobster at no extra cost.

The Oregano is a great place for lunch by the sea, but our favourite place for lunch was the Las Olas beach bar where there were themed party events most lunchtimes - Caribbean, Mexican, Asian etc. and there would often be live music too. The food there was more snacks and finger-foods but the setting was lovely and the atmosphere was great.

The Spice restaurant was another lovely venue for an evening meal and we enjoyed some very nice pan-Asian dishes there. The only disappointment was that we wanted to book one of the Teppanyaki booths and were told that we would have to queue when they opened at 5.30pm, so we did this only to be told that there needed to be a minimum of 8 people to make a booking. By the time we discovered this it was too late to try to find some more like-minded people to make up the required number, but we will make sure we make friends early next time as everyone seemed to have an amazing time in the booths.

Another lovely touch was the afternoon speciality coffees served at Cafe Kafe - iced liqueur coffees with a range of different ingredients. Very moorish, especially with an afternoon pancake from the nearby stall which sets up at 4pm every day.

As my review title says, we can't wait to go back and are in the process of booking a 10 day holiday at the Excellence in May 2015. Bring it on!

Room Tip: We had a 2nd floor room in block 3, a short walk to the main hotel and restaurants but far enough aw...

We visited Excellence Riviera for the first time in May 2013. In June 2014 we were back for another helping!

I actually can't fault this hotel. The resort is amazing, with a great choice of swimming pools, great food (my favourite this year being The Grill restaurant), a wide variety of cocktails and other alcoholic drinks, friendly and helpful staff and some quality entertainment every night. The rooms are fantastic. Again, we got a free upgrade to a Junior Swim-Up Suite in Block 6 (the quieter block). A large, clean room with 2 queen size beds. Large shower room and plenty of toiletries in case you run out! The sun loungers outside your suite have been replaced by a large, comfortable bed to while away the days. Free WiFi with a signal that sometimes reaches the beach! All this and only a 20min private transfer from the airport!

If you haven't tried All-Inclusive before, I thoroughly recommend choosing this hotel for your 'first time'!

Not related to the hotel, but I do recommend paying a couple of hundred pounds more and flying with Virgin. We flew Thomas Cook this year and it was terrible in comparison (a long haul flight with short haul service(s) on a relic of a plane)! Also...take Mexican Pesos for tipping etc. rather than USD!

Room Tip: Block 6 looks onto a much quieter pool area. Junior Swim Up Suites are great (especially if given as...

We just returned from our first (and certainly not last) visit to Excellence Riviera Cancun. The entire trip was TOP NOTCH!!! Ariana was fabulous, she was our tour guide for the bike tour (be sure to do this, you go through a small town and can get some great souvenirs!) as well as the host for multiple on site activities and the evening entertainment.

The rooms were fabulous and housekeeping was the BEST I have experienced! We would leave for breakfast and upon our return the room had been freshened up, even though we were gone for a short period!

We were on this trip with a group of 9 friends and family for my 30th birthday. We had trouble one evening at the Italian dining venue getting a table for 9. They informed us that they were not allowed to seat a table larger than 8 (even though we arrived close to 8:30 PM). We broke into a table of 7 and a table of 2 which were serviced by the same waiter...figure that one out! The food at this restaurant wasn't that great compared to the Japanese and French restaurants (they were my favs), Lobster House followed closely.

We set up all of our transportation through Seasons Tours for our airport shuttles and then a private tour to the ruins. If you are able to , request Alberto he was great and full of information. He even picked up a birthday cake for me since the tour was on my birthday!

All and all this was a trip that I will never forget! I can't wait for the Oyster Bay property to be completed, Jamaica here we come!!!

Room Tip: If you can be in the 7 building this is closest to the center of the resort. While you may hear some...

Never posted a review before, but This hotel exceeded my expectations and deserves recognition!
The staff is wonderful, the food is great, the swim up rooms are so convenient and the beach is beautiful.
We went to the shows every night and they were very entertaining.
Never had a problem getting drinks on the beach or at the pool.
We will definitely return!

I've visited this hotel twice now, once for our honeymoon in June 2010 and once for a holiday in March 2014. The weather was much better on the March trip, outside of the hurricane season (i didn't know this first time round) We stayed all inclusive.

On arrival you are greeted at the door with a champagne or orange juice and a cool towel to wipe your hands/face after your trip which is a nice touch. Your bags are take off of you when you arrive too. From the minute you get out of the taxi, you are looked after, it's a real treat!

We upgraded our room for the March 2014 to the rooftop terrace. It was expensive but worth every penny! You have your own huge hydrapool, sun loungers and two huge beds! It's all spotlessly clean too! The minibar is loaded with drinks and snacks as well as having your own nespresso coffee machine and alcohol optics so you can relax on your terrace all day without having to hunt our food or drinks. Even if you don't upgrade to the terrace, it's definitely worth upgrading to the excellence club - the swim up suites are in a much better location.

The food is brilliant - an enormous choice of food and drinks for breakfast, lunch and dinner! You literally could not fault it! Something for everyone and it's easy to eat healthy or splurge on treats as they have it all to cater for all tastes.

They have a range of restaurants there - all included within your all inclusive package. It's like eating out every night! The only restaurant i didn't like was the Agave (mexican) - the food was pretty awful, and the chicken so undercooked i had to send it back. I visited on both trips and found both experiences poor. All the other restaurants were lovely but SPICE was a real treat! If you go on the boat trips and catch your own fish, they will cook it for you at the grill which is nice.

There's not much to do outside of the hotel but there is lots of entertainment from dancers, singers, live music, fire acts etc. We visited Coco Bongo on the first trip which was nice however it became a bit rowdy and i got pushed by a man i don't know in there which was quite frightening.

The spa here is wonderful! A real treat, luxurious and relaxing!

Would recommend to anyone looking for a luxury holiday. Perfect for couples and honeymoons! Can't wait to come back!

Room Tip: Upgrade to the excellence club rooms for a better location and pool! Even better are the rooftop roo...
