“Many handmade items”

We enjoyed visiting the Collectivo. Many of the crafts are the same items from the different vendors, but they are talented and the prices are much better than in the hotel gift shop. And you can meet the artist.

We spent an afternoon in Puerto Morelos and found this artisans' collective to be one of the best shopping opportunities during our trip. In particular, we were impressed with the man seen in the photos below. I wished we had written down his name in order to give him the credit he deserves. He was mentioned by name in the Lonely Planet guidebook as one of the best makers of hammocks in the area. We got to see him demonstrate how they are weaved. He has a large selection of handmade Mayan hammocks and he has lots of hooks to hang up different samples so you can try them out. We enjoyed talking with him and we ultimately bought two well-made hammocks to take home to commemorate our trip. He told us the hammock we bought typically takes a week to make! I've already enjoyed lying in it at home underneath the Fall leaves and fondly remembering our recent trip. We told our friends (who traveled with us) about this place and they took a trip out to Puerto Morelos the next day and bought a hammock for themselves as well.

Collectivo de Artesanos at Puerto Morelos was a great experience reasonable prices were found by us as well as being able to watch some of the artisans at work making necklaces wind mobiles, etc.. A great place off the beaten path and away from the almost pushy vendors in some of Cancun's markets. We highly recommend a visit here in the early morning and just down the street catch a great little breakfast spread at Ojo De Agua right on the beach.
