We recently went on a private tour with a friend who volunteers at the lighthouse. I had previously been on a guided tour with a larger group. Both experiences were excellent. It is really interesting to look back on the history of shipping along the coast and to see the measures that were taken to prevent disasters. A group of very dedicated volunteers is gradually restoring this tiny islet, which once housed four families, to its original state. The visit does involve a bit of a walk with a few hundred feet of climbing, but that adds a lot to the experience.

The hubby and I did a night tour and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's basically run now by all volunteers and you can tell that they're truly passionate about the Lighthouse. It was interesting little community on the hill... Slightly creepy like a ghost-town. My favorite part was when we climbed the lighthouse steps and rounded to the outside and got to feel the wind whipping at us at around 60MPH. Coolest feeling - had to catch the cute little girl in front of me from flying back! Very enjoyable, would definitely go back and bring guests. You do have to park at the side of the road and follow each-other in and then have to hike up the steep hill. So people who are mobility impaired beware!

We happened to be driving to Big Sur from Carmel on the day that they had special tours of Point Sur LIghthouse Station. We parked our car at the base and were driven up by van. The cost was $25 per person. The proceeds goes towards preservation of this historical place. We toured the lighthouse and the home of the lighthouse first keeper's home. The home has been restored and decorated in the style of the 1950's. The kitchen table and chairs were almost identical to the ones in the home of my youth. We learned a lot from the tour of the lighthouse. The weather was beautiful and clear. We had amazing views of the sea. There was a telescope for whale and other sealife watching.

My husband and i drove fromSan Francisco to Los Angelos via Carmel and Santa Barbara i can only recomend this trip the scenery was wonderful the places we visited were fantastic. The reason we drove this way was because the pacific ocean was on the right as you drive so you can make the most of the scenery. If you are thinking of doing this trip go for it you will not be sorry. We also took in Las Vegas and Palm Springs and San Diego love it all.
