“Idyllic weekend retreat for those wanting peace and quiet.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 August 2012

We stayed for 2 nights in the Fireplace Room. It was very comfortable; updated but still has a rustic feel. The room was on the bottom floor and quite close to the main office. We thought it might be noisy with people coming and going outside, but not at all. I’ve never been to Post Ranch but people mentioned that the rooms at Post Ranch have not been updated although the views there are spectacular. Weather was great. We loved the fact that the hotel was for adults only and really enjoyed the peace and quiet. We loved the continental breakfast and the Wine and Cheese reception. The spread for both was fantastic and perfect for a 2 night stay. If you stay longer, the novelty might wear off, but for a weekend trip, it’s a really nice touch. Service was superb and everyone from the front desk to the gardening staff were polite and friendly. Hotel has free wi-fi and morning newspaper. We joined in on the Morning Walk Tour, which was very enjoyable. The hotel is in a good location – close to Nepenthe and the Big Sur Bakery. They have a shuttle which will take you within a 1 mile radius of the hotel. We ate at the Ventana Restaurant for dinner both nights. The food is good (the starters are fantastic!!); the entrees were a good size; and the patio is gorgeous. Lots of people took advantage of eating outside or enjoying a drink.

A few observations – the wood floors and walls creak. So we could hear the people upstairs walking around and we could hear our neighbors. It didn’t bother us, but there isn’t much insulation. We also thought it was a little odd that the hotel charged for making coffee or tea in your room. They had one of those Keurig machines in our room but basically if you used it, they charged you. Fortunately, the hotel has complimentary coffee and tea in the main lobby all day so it wasn’t a big deal. Lastly, one suggestion for improvement would be to expand the spa or figure out a better way for people to change. We scheduled massages one afternoon, but 2 other couples did too around the same time. There are no changing rooms or showers. You basically have 1 bathroom and a closet to change into your robe. If you want to shower, you have to walk to the pool and use the outside shower stalls. The spa has small lockers to hold your stuff but they’re located right outside the bathroom and are low to the floor. So while you’re on your hands and knees putting your things away, other people are coming in and out of the bathroom and it’s just a big mess. Not at all relaxing. There was a traffic jam both when we arrived and when we left.

But overall, a pleasant stay and we’d definitely go back.

This is an amazing space - the natural surroundings are gorgeous but the resort itself does an amazing job of capturing that essence and translating into your stay. The rooms are beautiful, the hospitality fantastic, the on-site activities (yoga, hikes) are top-notch, the spa services are some of the best, etc. I loved taking the walk from the main resort property through the woods to the restaurant (which is itself excellent), and the complete peacefulness of the space.
Note - this is very much a spot for couples, they say no one under 18 and while I think that some people try to sneak a child in it is really an adult resort and lovely for being so!

Can't say we had a bad time..
Service is good, rooms are clean and large.
the patio Jacuzzi was awesome
Views from our room as very cool.

Morning breakfast was OK, not much selection but good.

our couple massage was OK, I didn't leave as relaxed and rejuvenated as I had from other spa experiences.

Service is good, though like some others said.. a little snotty from the staff

I really can't pinpoint why I didn't have a great time.. I don't mind blowing it out on a high end resort but I just don't think we got the most bang for our bucks on this trip.

I first stayed at the Ventana over a decade ago when I was taking yet again, my favorite drive in the world, up the PCH all the way to Napa Valley.
It was a wonderfulstay back then with an incredible room (we saw deer outside our room in the morning!) and absolutely incredible food.
This time, we decided to make it a 2-night stay, and we took full advantage of the hotel and all it offers.
All I can say is the Ventana exceeded all our expectations in evryway possible. The spa is terrific; we had a fireplace room and it was wonderful.
We will make the Ventana Inn a stop each and every time we make this trip!

Nothing to say about the location or the rooms, both are great; I admit I still prefer the Post Ranch Inn over the Ventana but the latter still has plenty to offer if you're looking to relax and have a nice meal.
All the conditions are there to turn this peaceful haven into a truly luxurious resort except for those details - that are never just "details" - and which make the difference between a good hotel and a true luxury hotel such as the ones from the Relais & Châteaux or Small Luxury Hotels of the World chains. Management definitely needs to travel a little and learn.
In conclusion: great location, great rooms, good restaurant, luxury prices but ... no luxury perfomance

Try the Ventana inn and Spa in Big Sur on your next visit. It is beautiful, quiet, has excellent service, room is generous and comfortable. The meals at the restaurant is delicious. Wine tasting with cheese samples in the afternoons. SPA was very very good. The staff friendly and capable. We had a lovely stay.
