We stayed for 2 nights in the Fireplace Room. It was very comfortable; updated but still has a rustic feel. The room was on the bottom floor and quite close to the main office. We thought it might be noisy with people coming and going outside, but not at all. I’ve never been to Post Ranch but people mentioned that the rooms at Post Ranch have not been updated although the views there are spectacular. Weather was great. We loved the fact that the hotel was for adults only and really enjoyed the peace and quiet. We loved the continental breakfast and the Wine and Cheese reception. The spread for both was fantastic and perfect for a 2 night stay. If you stay longer, the novelty might wear off, but for a weekend trip, it’s a really nice touch. Service was superb and everyone from the front desk to the gardening staff were polite and friendly. Hotel has free wi-fi and morning newspaper. We joined in on the Morning Walk Tour, which was very enjoyable. The hotel is in a good location – close to Nepenthe and the Big Sur Bakery. They have a shuttle which will take you within a 1 mile radius of the hotel. We ate at the Ventana Restaurant for dinner both nights. The food is good (the starters are fantastic!!); the entrees were a good size; and the patio is gorgeous. Lots of people took advantage of eating outside or enjoying a drink.
A few observations – the wood floors and walls creak. So we could hear the people upstairs walking around and we could hear our neighbors. It didn’t bother us, but there isn’t much insulation. We also thought it was a little odd that the hotel charged for making coffee or tea in your room. They had one of those Keurig machines in our room but basically if you used it, they charged you. Fortunately, the hotel has complimentary coffee and tea in the main lobby all day so it wasn’t a big deal. Lastly, one suggestion for improvement would be to expand the spa or figure out a better way for people to change. We scheduled massages one afternoon, but 2 other couples did too around the same time. There are no changing rooms or showers. You basically have 1 bathroom and a closet to change into your robe. If you want to shower, you have to walk to the pool and use the outside shower stalls. The spa has small lockers to hold your stuff but they’re located right outside the bathroom and are low to the floor. So while you’re on your hands and knees putting your things away, other people are coming in and out of the bathroom and it’s just a big mess. Not at all relaxing. There was a traffic jam both when we arrived and when we left.
But overall, a pleasant stay and we’d definitely go back.
