Big Sur Lodge
Reviewed 3 January 2014

There aren't many reasonably priced accomodations in Big Sur so we chose this lodge. Despite prepaid reservations for 2 nights we had a very basic room.No fireplace, no TV, no phone (and no cell service) and no internet.the small lmission style lamps had really dark lampshades and very low wattage bulbs - which made even reading a book fairly difficult. Since it was Nov 1 we did not experience the pool. The room was spacious - but with spartan furnishings it just seemed big and empty. Also placed in between two noisy room even though the property did not seem crowded at this time of year. The restaurant was very nice and the food was good. Staff very friendly - but the lodge experience was lacking.

DMKofNJ-Thank you for staying with us. We are glad that you liked the restaurant, the food, and “very friendly” staff. We are sorry that the room décor and amenities did not meet your expectations. As shown on our website, Big Sur Lodge is a retreat-like atmosphere in an outdoor nature setting. We hope that you might join us again someday. Happy New Year to you.

All the joys of camping ... but with warmth and running water! We enjoyed our spacious room and the deers grazing about on our front lawn. The local pool was fun for a quick suntan and hiking through the redwoods magic. The local restaurant waaay to overpriced, other than that - totally great experience.

This November we were driving Highway 1 and the sun set and darkness quickly set in......we saw the lighted sign and pulled in to the lodge. It was delightful and reasonably priced, fireplaces with wood in many rooms. The accommodations were spacious, delightful and clean. We were greeted with Stellar Jays, deer and turkeys on our morning walk to the main lodge for breakfast. The food was very good and the lodge was lovely. It seemed to offer many family activities and would be equally delightful in the summer. It is set into a beautiful Redwood forest with the Julia Pfiffer waterfalls a short hike away.

We were able to locate only one quiet off-road reasonably priced ($150 for two) attractive non-camping accommodation in Big Sur.

The Lodge cabins have it all, including a kitchen if needed.
- Delightful one- story condo-style cabins in redwood setting with plenty of room for sun.
- Beautiful and peaceful; no TV
- Quiet; nowhere near noisy Route 1
- A well equipped spacious lodge with dining room
- Wood-burning fireplace
- Lots of choices as to type of cabin locale.

This is probably the best location, and great for the price range, in the area. Rustic is the word that will come to mind. Big Sur Lodge is old, but a comfortable well maintained property in a national park (park pass included with stay). Beautiful landscaping and wild turkeys roam the parking lot. Great hiking/walking trails that start on the property. We did the Buzzard Loop, which took about 1 1/2 hours and then spent maybe 15 additional minutes at the top enjoying the view. Not suitable for strollers but not an overly strenuous trail.
The service at the lodge main desk was not exceptional. Expect to stand at the counter and go unacknowledged, possibly more than once. You will get what you need, but not much enthusiasm from the lady at the counter.
Our shower had someone else's razor still inside and didn't look like it has been cleaned very well, maybe not at all. Overall though, our cabin was clean and comfortable. If you are a light sleeper, you might struggle with the old fashioned heater next to your bed.

cor f-Thank you for staying with us. We are so glad to hear that you liked the location, the “beautiful landscaping and wild turkeys”, the “great hiking/walking trails” including Buzzard’s Roost trail, your “clean and comfortable” cabin, and the value for the price. We are sorry to hear that the Front Desk staff member lacked enthusiasm and attentiveness and we thank you for letting us know, so that we can address this situation. Also, we sincerely apologize that your shower didn’t seem clean and that the heater interrupted your sleep. Thank you for telling us about your experience. Any time you are here, and something in your room concerns you, please feel free to reach out to us, so we can have housekeeping correct the issue while you are here. We look forward to your next visit. Thank you for your nice review. Merry Christmas!

It's a state lodge so don't expect personal service. The cabins, at least mine had a big fireplace that without a fire sucked out all the heat or with one, smoked up the room causing the smoke detector to go off several times. It had a small heater in the corner of the room but it didn't come close to warming the room. There were two extra twin beds in the room so I was at least able to load on more covers. The bathroom was always quite cold. I mostly had food prepared for our conference, which was plentiful and just a tad above average. The lettuces were fresh with lots of baby greens and I enjoyed the fish. If you want gluton free or vegan you'll find it challenging. And... when I had a craving for really good chocolate there was none to be found. They sell moose droppings in the lobby and just commercial grade sugar candy in the gift shop. So come prepared with your own stash of gourmet chocolate and healthy snacks.

skylar60- Thank you for visiting us this December during your conference. There was an unexpected cold and freezing spell in early December that hit the entire Monterey Peninsula including Big Sur. Very cold weather is highly unusual and unexpected in Big Sur. We are very sorry if your room heater and fireplace did not provide enough warmth during that cold spell. Thank you for telling us about your experience, so we can correct this situation.

The food provided through your conference program did offer gluten-free and vegan choices including the pasta entrees. We will make sure to communicate the menu items in your welcome packet the next time you come to a conference with us. We appreciate your feedback. Thank you again for visiting us.

We looked at several places before landing here! The ones we wanted were "no vacancy" or stupid expensive, offering NOTHING for the crazy rates! THIS PLACE WAS GREAT! right in the middle of giant redwoods... quiet... wood burning fireplace (they ALSO provided us with a bundle of wood each night!)... clean... cozy... BY FAR the best value and we supported the park system! This is where we got engaged and it will always be special to us!

Room Tip: choose the cabins with the fireplace... SO WORTH IT!!!!!! and the food in the lodge was great too!
