Big Sur Lodge

Big Sur Lodge wasn't the worst place I have stayed. It was clean, roomy and convenient to the park, at least. But here is a list of reasons why I won't go back:

-check-in attendant was slow and rude to other staff in front of guests
-rooms dated, and not in a good way
-soap smelled like old lady perfume
-trails in the park were ok, but my least favorite in Big Sur
-restaurant wasn't impressive

Basically, there was absolutely no character at this place - especially compared to the other amazing resorts and lodges in the area. And for the same price, I was expecting something equal.

The only reason I could see booking Big Sur Lodge is if you had a family w/ children and booked a room with a kitchenette. Anyone else, try someplace else. You won't be missing a thing.

We were very disappointed. Although we didn't expect a five star hotel, we were surprised at how little value this lodge offers. The restaurant has the slowest service we have ever experienced. When the family we were traveling with forgot to ask for a separate restaurant bill in advance, the waitress lectured them about when to ask for the separate bill instead of graciously accommodating them; after we waited for over an hour and one half to receive our oatmeal, eggs, and bagel breakfasts! We were unable to gain access to our room upon check out due to the restaurant delay. Our key cards had expired. We waited well over an hour to gain access to our rooms; no apologies offered!
Amazingly bad customer service. We will never return.

Weather I’m planning an extended visit or a one night stay at a hotel; I always consult Trip Advisor because of its accurate reviews. My boyfriend and I were traveling down the Pacific Coast Highway and stayed at the Big Sur Lodge for one night (May 23th). We arrived at the hotel around 7pm and check-in was a breeze. Rooms are big, clean, and comfortable. There are no TV’s or phones but you won’t miss them. Get outside and enjoy the wilderness. Among others, you must visit Pfeiffer Falls, Pfeiffer Beach, and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. Bring your camera…..unbelievable scenery. The staff is helpful and full of suggestions on restaurants and must see sights. The Big Sur Lodge restaurant was surprising good. We ate outside right on the river with plenty of heaters keeping us warm. The food is average but a little pricey, as was the lodge.
I was a little disappointed to hear that the pool was closed for renovations but don’t let that keep you from visiting. Overall the Big Sur Lodge was perfect for a short stay. One more thing…..try and get to Nepenthe for lunch. Great food with breathtaking views of the Big Sur coastline.

A very nice hotel, cute cabin type rooms and very clean. No TV which was no big deal but if your family relies on it, be aware. Great location at the state park!! Enjoyed the restaurant too. Would stay here again.

We loved this hotel so much we are going back this summer. The Big Sur Lodge is a great getaway. We loved it! Our room was so serene in the middle of the redwoods, we had the best night of sleep we've ever had.

The location is beautiful and we went hiking as well as finding the obscure pfeiffer beach which we had to cross a river to get too, but it was so worth it!

I recommend this hotel to anyone who loves nature, but doesn't like to rough it for accomodations. The food at the lodge is great too!

We booked a room at the Big Sur Lodge in the state park, expecting convenience, but not expected the beautiful (if slightly spartan room) with an incredibly comfy king-sized bed with quilted sham, and with lovely slanting celings and a skylight! The room was spotlessly clean, the in-wall heater was wonderful at night, and the small fridge was perfect for our small foodstash. The bathroom had a profusion of wonderful towels, and the shower was hot and lovely after a long day hiking. The infrared heater in the bathroom as well as the hairdryeir were much appreciated!

The park staff who checked us in were wonderful--helpful with suggesting hikes, etc. We never used our car during our stay--just hiked directly from our room!

After reading some of the other posts, I was worried that the Big Sur Lodge might be too rustic or run down. However, I can only assume that these were baseless comlaints or perhaps were written prior to some rennovatons or something. I went with a group in April and we rented five rooms. All were clean and modern and spacious. Tables and chairs, etc., were new.

If you are staying for a couple of days and you are the frugal type, I would advise getting a room with a kitchen. That way you can bring in your own food and save money that way.

I found that one of the benefits of staying at the Big Sur Lodge is that it is located within the Pfeiffer State Park. Therefore, there are literally trails right outside your door through the Redwood forest and on to points such as Pfeiffer Falls (a nearby waterfall). The weather in April was mild and pleasant (about 65 degrees). The pool was not open at this time of year. I assume that in the summer, the pool would be a fun hangout for children. That area is also surrounded by plenty of grass. In other words, children do not need to "play" in the forest. They can play ball on the grass, etc., as well.

Overall, I'd recommend the Big Sur Lodge.
