“Worth the splurge!”
Reviewed 8 August 2014

The hubby and I splurged on a 3 day mid-week getaway here, we didn't want to leave!! Yes, at first glance the Post Ranch Inn is expensive (the rooms vary from around $1,000-$3000) per night. However, this particular resort tucked away among the mountains and the ocean in Big Sur is always on one "Top 10" list or another for a reason; it is so gorgeous here!

Rooms: 5 stars: We went for a treehouse the first night (how can you not??) And an Ocean House the next night. We got lucky with the treehouse, they put us in the Borona treehouse with an excellent view of the ocean from the window on one side, and a forest view on the other side. The room is very rustic but chic, I mean what other tree house comes with heated bathroom floors? :P The windows are situated very nicely and you can see the stars come out at night; magical :)
The Ocean House is definitely a must-stay, especially if you luck out and get gorgeous weather! The weather on our second day had a heavy marine layer and thick fog, which was haunting and beautiful too, but on the first and third day the sun came out and the gorgeous ocean was literally right outside our deck. This room is bigger then the tree house, and very private. Each room comes with a stocked mini bar with all the drinks you could want (wine and beer included) and a variety of snacks, this is complimentary for the guests and gets refilled daily. They also provide a good stock of wood for their fireplaces, and the decor is very charming and rustic.

Service: 5 stars: I read that some of the staff can be rude and condescending, but we didn't feel that was the case at all! Everyone from the guy at the security gate, to the bellman, were so friendly. Since they only have 39 rooms here, they usually know you by name, and the service throughout was prompt, courteous and what you'd expect from a 5 star resort like this.

Food: 5 stars (note: we only got room service from Sierra Mar) Post Ranch has its own on-site restaurant called Sierra Mar and they provide a complimentary breakfast for their guests each morning. The breakfast is buffet style and very delicious, with a huge range of savory and sweet to satisfy any palette. They also have to-go coffee and tea cups readily available which was a nice touch, plus you cannot beat the view at Sierra Mar! We also ordered lunch and dinner from Sierra Mar to have in our rooms because we literally didn't want to leave lol. The sandwiches (turkey and burger) were good, they can also pack it for a picnic, but I highly recommend their Ranch dinners. The portion is for 2 people and includes bread, salad, main entree and dessert (price range is around $150) we got the ribs and it was sooo tender and delicious. They also have their own on-site organic garden where the chef gets his greens.

Tip:
*They have 2 on-site open top Lexus Convertibles if you want to take it around Big Sur for a spin
*TRIPLE check the weather before you come if you are going to be disappointed with the marine layer. Post Ranch is very highly elevated above sea level, so most mornings start out super foggy and it clears by 1PM, however, there are days where the marine layer never leaves and you don't get an ocean view at all.
*The Jade Pool by Sierra Mar has an amazing view, it's a hot tub at around 110 degrees and is so relaxing
*You can order a picnic lunch to go from Sierra Mar if you want to go enjoy your food during the hikes around the property, or on the beach.
*The Borona treehouse is their best treehouse :)

After a long drive from San Francisco we arrived at the Post Ranch Inn feeling in need of a drink, some fresh air and a rest. We picked the perfect location for all of this.
We were met on arrival by the very friendly staff who made check in a breeze.
We were given a quick guided tour around the property - saw deer and squirrels along the way. It was just so peaceful.
Our room was named "Pick" and was a lower coast house room. Was absolutely perfect. We had a full view of the ocean, a great open fire place, deep bath and everything in the room we needed. I loved the no TV policy as it forced my husband to rest and read a book!
The restaurant was divine. Attentive staff, a view to die for and some absolutely delicious food. We can highly recommend the duck, ravioli and chocolate cheesecake.
We used the very warm outside spas - the weather was chilly so this was very welcomed.
We both slept so well - combination of a comfortable bed, fresh air and tranquillity.
I had an amazing massage with Carl - he does a great Swedish massage - highly recommended.
Breakfast was delicious - fantastic buffet, great coffee.
I cannot fault the Post Ranch Inn and only wished we had stayed more than three nights.
On checking out we were shown the new cliff Houses that had their own outside tub. Definitely on my list for next time.

Room Tip: "Pick" was a fantastic room. Great views, close to everything and we experienced no noise...

I stayed at Post Ranch Inn (PRI) recently and was quite bowled over by the envronmentally friendly design, location, rooms, views, infinity hot tub and service. While this is a very expensive property, it is worth every penny of the experience. I was upgraded to an ocean view room the first night and stayed in a treehouse the last two nights. Both were great with amazing, but different views. The resort is very quiet, nestled on a cliff above the pacific ocean. The infinity hot tub overlooking the coast is a beautiful place to enjoy the views and relax and read. The rooms are nicely decorated and comfortable and had ready to light log fireplaces. The resort is high enough that even when fog is clinging to the coastline you can enjoy the sun above the fog. Great yoga classes and hiking trails are on the property...and there is even better hiking at the parks nearby. I am already planning my next trip to PRI! The only downside was the PRI bottled (in glass containers) water. It tasted like clorine, even when put in the PRI supplied metal water bottles. There was a stocked refrigerator with complimentary snacks that were yummy. And the breakfast, which is included, is extensive and fabulous. Dinner at Sierra Mar, the restaurant on the property was good as well.

Room Tip: The ocean rooms are to die for, but the treehouses are very cool as well. The tree houses not direc...

PRI was exactly what we were looking for on our first visit to the CA coast. Room view was our main criteria, and we couldn't have been more pleased with the ocean house room we had, cliff side, on the Pacific with a balcony. My wife loved the window seat overlooking the ocean. The staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfasts and dinners in the restaurant were excellent and the setting is just beautiful. At nearly $2K a night for a primo view room it is very pricey, but it is truly an exceptional place. Watched whales spout from the deck off our room. If we're ever back in this part of CA, this is where I'd want to stay again - it is worth the high price.

Room Tip: The ocean house or ocean view room is great. Free-standing room and balcony, totally private, right...

My partner and I stayed at Post Ranch Inn for a belated birthday. What a treat! Spectacular in every way. The property is so unique consisting of multiple award winning architecture. Site placement of all buildings is impeccable.
We had a villa overlooking the Pacific Ocean several buildings up from the Dining Area. Our view was breath taking and mesmerizing! The villas a nice, a bit rustic in a sophisticated way and private.
Staff did a great job making our special stay even more special. Food was superb in a Ding Area perched over the pacific cliffs. There is also a small outdoor patio that was perfect for breakfast.
Overall, it is a treat that is so worth it. We cannot wait to return!

Green Features: Post Ranch takes great effort to be Eco Friendly. It is appreciated and an added value to a brilliant hotel persona.

For our 20th anniversary my wife and I drove to Big Sur. Same route we took when we were dating, but now we can afford to reward ourselves a little.

Post Ranch Inn was ideal. the rooms felt so private and connected to the environment. It almost felt like we were camping. There is abundant wildlife . You can see wild turkeys, coastal birds, and if you forget binoculars there are some in your room! We could see the stars each night through the spacious glass in our "tree-house" style room.

The food was delicious, inventive and featured local sourcing. The service was exemplary. From the guys at the bell desk who can advise you on hikes around the property or Big Sur, to the restaurant staff, they were really attentive and friendly. The small number of guest rooms for the size of the property is what makes it feel so private and uncrowded.

If I had to find fault, the spa was small...No separate shower facilities for men and women, no whirlpool or steam rooms, but the massages were great. You have to walk a little to get to the larger pool or gym, but the grounds are so beautiful and there are small pools very near the rooms.
Expensive? we're no longer starving students, and I felt like the luxury we we treated to was worth every penny. This is the perfect retreat for a couple to appreciate each other in a spectacular natural setting.

I will definitely be back!

Room Tip: the treehouse rooms are as good as the ocean view...The forest is beautiful and we sat on the patio...

Everything is anticipated for any whim. While ocean views are wonderful, the tree house is a master suite 650 sq ft with cornerless windows, bringing the outdoors in. The real treat is the ' moon roof' over your bed --- windows in the ceiling to bring in the night sky. Up 1,500 feet from the ocean, the view from the salt water 'warming' pool with the invisible edge is exquisite. House made snacks in the frig were perfect after the day's hike to reduce the hunger pains before feasting at sunset. Included breakfast offered house-cured salmon with chive cream cheese with gluten free bages (which were tasteless).
