My husband and I visited Glen Oaks Motel during the weekend of the U.S. Open (June 18th/19th) due in part because we could not find a room until Sunday, June 20th in Pebble Beach. BUT oh what a huge find in Big Sur, one amazing motor lodge: Glen Oaks. We stayed in the "Fireside Guest Suite - King" room five with a pvt patio. Our room did not have the two sided gas fireplace (where you could view the gas fire from either your pvt patio and/or your bedroom), no big deal to us since the room is so pvt (backing up against a hill, surrounded by trees, away from the parking lot/cars and Hwy 1, corner room) the room was superb, we kept our bedroom and bathroom windows open at night while the bedroom gas fireplace was on (Hwy 1 noise was not an issue to us). The room was beautiful, cozy and clean, king bed was very comfortable (blankets, sheets, pillows all wonderful) we esp. loved the heated bathroom floor. In other words, we loved our room. We had no complaints during our two day stay. Yes there are no cell phone "bars" but really when you visit Big Sur do you really need to talk on your cell phone? WiFi works great at Glen Oaks and/or drive up the hill four miles to get cell bars. There is an outdoor gas fireplace/benches to sit and chat with fellow guests while enjoying a night cap and taking in the view of the beautiful stars (Jake and I met a great couple from Long Beach Friday night who were also attending the U.S. Open, we could have talked all night with them). My husband and I drove from LA to Glen Oaks on Friday, Hwy 1 (six hr drive), checked-in (welcoming/friendly staff), unpacked and headed out for dinner at Nepenthe Restaurant (about five miles from Glen Oaks) for a beautiful sunset dinner. The view of the Pacific Ocean from the cliff top of Nepenthe will seriously take your breath away at its beauty of Big Sur. IF you miss the sunset, no worries, the beautiful interior restaurant with the wood burning fireplace, tall silver candelabra's/red candles noted on the dinner tables and pillows scattered around will do for a romantic dinner. We had brunch the next day at Big Sur Bakery -- GREAT (about three miles from Glen Oaks). The staff, food and outdoor patio was so perfect for brunch. Drove into Carmel for Saturday afternoon/evening and spent our day on Carmel Beach until dark, where I surprised my husband with a romantic bonfire at sunset (www.romanticroomdesigns.com). As my husband stated "I punk'd him", the bonfire setting was PERFECT!!! Overall, our trip to Glen Oaks was truly a little piece of heaven!!
