“Great Place in Beautiful Woods”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 June 2013 via mobile

We stayed here in our RV for one night and loved this beautiful place surrounded by beautiful woodland. The Park felt a bit crowded in public areas and in the rocky river next to the park which got a bit busy in the hotter parts of the day. But there is a lot of fun to be had on the river. You can hire tubes for $1 an hour after you have paid the $10 deposit and ride down the tame rapids next to the park. There is also a big rock to jump off into the swimming hole. Staff were friendly and helpful. There is also a shop to buy camping goods on site which is conveniently open until 9pm. Overall this is a great park in beautiful surrounds!

The day we arrived here the weather was blowing a gale and really cool on the coast. But it was warm and tranquil at the camp and we spent a lovely afternoon sitting by the river as the kids rode the tubes you can rent there for $1 an hour. A beautiful setting amid towering redwoods. I loved the clean and modern wood cabin showers. Friendly staff, a good laundry, and an on-site store which sells campsite necessities at reasonable prices. My kids loved the organic soft serve ice-cream at $1.25 a pop. There's a general store 300 metres down the road if you need something more. We had no cellphone reception here, but there was a couple of public telephones on site. Loved our stay here.

Camping here was a breeze and offered just the perfect location for hanging out in Big Sur.

We camped here specifically because we were traveling with our Shiba Inu and their cabins do not allow dogs. We were just here for one night and it served our purpose. One is hard-pressed to find accomodations in Big Sur that allow dogs.

The setting is very fairy-tale like...redwood trees, wooden bridge...The Big Sur river runs through the property, or the cabins are built along the river. Ha! Considering it was a weekend night in the summer, the campers were very respectful and adhered to the curfew.

Our campsite had privacy, a fire pit and was near the bathrooms past the basketball court. The bathrooms were kept clean and had hot water.

The location can't be beat - close to Molera State Park, The River Inn (for live music), Nepenthe (lunch or dinner), hiking trails and Pfeiffer Beach State Park.

If you're low maintenance and looking for a place to pitch a tent for a night or two, this is a great lodging alternative in Big Sur.

I would like to stay in one of the cabins next but I'll have to save that for when my dog stays home. :)

Room Tip: Ask for a tent near the river

My husband and I booked a cabin at the Big Sur Campground & Cabins. We love tent camping but decided to upgrade to a cabin for our honeymoon ($240/night). The cabins pictured on the Big Sur Campground & Cabins website looked clean, simple and fairly remote. When I called to book the reservation, we were promised a quiet cabin. When we arrived, we were disappointed to find the cabin was surrounded by tents with a busy basketball court well within earshot. The campground was extremely overcrowded and it wasn't even a weekend. We couldn't enjoy the smells of the forest because we could only smell pot from the nearby campers and our bathroom had a really intense urine odor. After five minutes, we returned our key and asked to speak with the manager to get a refund but there was no manager onsite who could help us. The manager, Neka, never called us back after several attempts to resolve the situation. Luckily, we ended up finding a vacancy at a lovely nearby establishment and had a really amazing time. Please be forewarned - the website is seriously misleading, the management is unresponsive and the campsite is really overcrowded.

We go camping here every year and we live in Monterey. It is great in the summer -- it is warm when the coast can be foggy and cold. It has nice clean! bathroom facilities (flush toilets, hot showers) also: compressed air for filling up mattresses and inner tubes.. There is a little playground for the kids, basket ball court for the older ones. Bring bikes- they can bike around the campground too. They have a little store on site so kids can go buy ice cream after dinner. Lots of fun!! The also water down the dirt road so it is not dusty. The river is great and nice swimming hole. We like to float down to River Inn - have lunch and drinks and then we walk back to camp. Great afternoon experience. Downside - camps are close together. The redwoods can make it chilly in the morning and evening -- just bring layers and you will be fine.

This was technically my first time camping, although we did have an RV so it wan't real camping I'm told. But we had 2 sites (10 and 11) because we had a total of 9 people and a dog. These two sites were spacious because we had room for cars, RV and 3 tents. We mostly stayed around site 11 and just setup the tents at site 10. We didn't use the table or firepit at 10 because it was too far away. It may have been better for us to get sites 11 and 13.

But most people are correct in that some of the campsites are packed in there. Also, we were across from the playground and there are children playing right at 8am. We also had a pathway down to the river in between our campsites and often had people walking through to get to the river, which was a little annoying. To get an idea of which sites are good or not, check out this review: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g240329-d295074-r8708203-Big_Sur_Campground_Cabins-Big_Sur_California.html#CHECK_RATES_CONT

Other than that, I'm told the bathroom/showers were some of the cleanest.

This place looks great on the website and in many ways it was - location is just off the highway but surrounded by beautiful redwoods. We stayed in a camping cabin - basically a wooden hut but with a perspex roof so you can lie in bed and look up to the trees - good but the roof needs to be cleaned more than it is for you to really enjoy this! No heating in the room but despite it being a cold night we were warm enough with the provided bedding. The mattress is solid foam which I haven't slept on since I was a student but it was surprisingly comfortable. The facilities (showers, toilets) are shared so your average campground - not overly private! My main disappointment was the issue we had with our booking. We pulled in and booked and paid for a cabin the night before - and went to have a look at the cabin they said we could have which was right on the river. As the previous 2 nights accommodation had been in average motels we were looking forward to being in the forest, next to the river and the campground on the other side with no-one in it. When we arrived the next day to check in however, that cabin was somehow no longer available - despite us having paid in full the previous night - and we were given one right at the back of the property, far from the river and surrounded by other cabins and RVs. We were annoyed and the offer to make up for it was a load of wood for the fire - which we passed on. While the cabin we stayed in was the same, we were disappointed - and walked past the cabin we were supposed to be in after dinner and it was in darkness with no car parked next to it, and it was also car-less the next morning at 7am - so I am not sure what the issue was. I also think it is overpriced for what you get - but this was my general experience up and down the Big Sur coast. There is also no wireless but you can get free wireless at the pub - which did a good dinner and has a great range of beer on tap. Deetjens down the road does a FANTASTIC breakfast and the service was excellent.
