“Rustic, comfortable, great value (for Big Sur)”
Reviewed 18 November 2013

My niece and I stayed in cabin #6, which was down by the creek amongst the redwoods, with no big views over the ocean. We decided on the creek rather than the hillside because we figured we'd have lots of opportunity to stop and admire the views while driving the coastal road. The nightly cost, including taxes, was a shade under $200.

The one-room cabin was comfortable, clean and cosy. We particularly enjoyed the quiet privacy of the porch facing the creek, although I don't think all the cabins were occupied while we were there and perhaps it would have been noisier if it had been peak occupancy. Particularly impressive were the helpfulness, friendliness and courtesy of the general store staff. We didn't eat at the restaurant, but instead had breakfast on our cabin porch.

Overall, a great experience. Definitely rustic compared to other overnight options in Big Sur, but great value for the area. Would certainly go back.

After staying many times at Deetjen's for our almost-annual trip to Big Sur, we decided to give Ripplewood a shot this time. What a great decision that was.

Our cabin (#2) was perfect. One large-ish room with a queen bed, small table and two chairs, faux fireplace (for ambiance rather than heat) and a big window that looks out on the Big Sur River. Small but clean bathroom (you have to squat down a bit to get your head under the faucet). Small but VERY clean kitchen.

We'd planned to make pasta one night, and I wasn't sure the cabin would have everything we needed. It did, and then some. Plates, cups, glasses (including wine glasses), colander, a big soup pot, multiple frying pans, utensils, etc. They also give you a little bottle of dish soap and a sponge for clean up (there's a $25 fee if you don't do your dishes). Couldn't find a cookie sheet, but they'd put fresh foil down on the two racks in the oven. So we just put our garlic bread directly on the foil.

Nice towels and toiletries were provided. The deck, off the kitchen, was the perfect place for morning coffee and cocktail hour. You can hear the river at night, and it's a very soothing sound. Plus, unlike Deetjen's, there are no common walls here. The next cabin (#3) isn't very far from you, but the way the decks are situated makes it feel like you have a lot of privacy.

Can't wait to stay here again.

Room Tip: Cabin 2 is on one end of the row of cabins by the river. Highly recommended. We peeked into other ca...

Our travel-guide warned us: expect to pay handsomely in Big Sur, but don't think more money will get you more amenities. While there's nothing we can say about Ripplewood Resort's competitors, we do know that our stay here (one night) was a great experience. The cabins have their own peculiar, corny charm. 'Rustic', as some described it, pretty much sums it up. It's not hard to imagine what attracted Jack Kerouac to staying in his friends cabin when he needed to escape the suffocating attention after publishing On the Road (note: if you're into Beat literature, read Kerouac's novel; if not, don't)

Perhaps Big Sur attracts two kinds of travelers. The first kind is looking for a full retreat in some luxurious spa or resort to get away from it all. The second kind is looking for a nice experience in the great outdoors, driving down the coast and marveling at the beauty of it all, hoping to find an unpretentious place to stay the night to intensify the sensation that life is best when uncomplicated. Ripplewood offers basic accommodations perfect for the second kind of traveller, and friendly service to go with it. Do have the pancakes for breakfast.

If you're looking for something in between camping and luxury accommodations, the cabins of Ripplewood Resort are a great fit. We stayed in cabin 12A, one-half of the duplex cabin 12, which is the least expensive accommodation of the resort. We preferred the layout of 12A as opposed to 12B, as the bathroom is closer to the door than to the bed. This particular cabin is on the east side of Hwy 1, near the gas station (one of only two we saw in all of Big Sur) and the cafe. The cabins on the west side of Hwy 1 are considered the "river" cabins, as they're down a steep slope near the running water.

The cabin was comfortable if bare bones, although there was a mini-fridge, which came in handy. It was perfectly warm at night, and we opened the windows during the day to allow fresh air to flow. (The bed and pillows, however, were a bit lumpy and not the most comfortable of our trip.) There's a little patio set outside the cabin, and it has an assigned parking spot just down a few steps from the entrance.

The downside is the very, very thin walls. You can hear EVERYTHING going on in the cabin next door, including entire conversations.

But the phenomenal location makes up for it: While the cabins are closer to the north end of Big Sur, you can be anywhere in the area (including Lime Kiln State Park, which we highly recommend and is closer to the southern end) within half an hour to 45 minutes. Don't miss sunsets at Pfeiffer State Beach!

We ate delicious, hearty breakfasts both mornings at Ripplewood Cafe and were able to stop for snacks and souvenirs at the Big Sur General Store, just a few minutes (by car) south on Hwy 1.

Room Tip: Cabins on the west side of Hwy 1 are near the river, but the small, less-expensive duplex cabins 12A...

We spent two nights at this resort and stayed in one of the rooms numbered 12. 12A and 12B are the cheapest and they were adequate for us. Nice clean rooms, with clean bathrooms. The log cabin room goes very well with the location. Also, as we stepped out of our room in the morning, we were greeted by a group of deers foraging around! That was a great feeling to be so close to nature. Big Sur is an expensive place and this was the cheapest room we could find.

Room Tip: Ask for room 12A or 12B if you are trying to keep your costs down.

These are basic non-luxury cabins but nicely located. Be sure to get a cabin right on the river...you can actually hear the water from the cabin's deck. The cabin comes with a little kitchen with stove, dishes, and full size refrigerator. It gets cold at night, but there is plenty of bedding and a little heater. It's also true that you need to go up next to the store for WiFi but it's a short hop and one can be "unplugged" now and then! Best of all is the little restaurant which serves a fantastic, inexpensive breakfast. The crew who operate the restaurant are friendly, talented cooks, and totally bi-lingual!

Room Tip: Get a cabin right on the river; it makes a big difference.

Very basic. Clean though. A wooden hut. Shower is ok. Disappointing that there was no wi fi in the huts - only near the office / store. Would be helpful, as phone coverage for T mobile is non existent.
Everything in Big Sur is expensive, so no 'good value' anywhere. This place is ok for a couple of nights as base to explore the area.

Don't have high expectations and you wont be disappointed.
