We traveled across the street from Post Ranch one evening to try out the Restaurant at Ventana. We got lazy last year and just stayed in our room, but staying at PRI much longer this time we adventured out to other places this time.

The restaurant doesn't seem that large up front, but once you enter you can tell it's a really huge space, both inside and out on the patio. We visited on a Saturday night and I was a bit surprised to see such a huge space relatively empty. I doubt they were at even one-third of capacity. The hostess also seemed really surprised we didn't want to sit outside when we said it was getting cold out as the sun set. The heaters aren't going to help that much.

On to the actual dinner. We both chose totally different items on the menu, which gave us a good view on a lot of what the kitchen was doing. Everything ranged from decent to delicious. The only thing I remember as sticking out as not that excellent was the sardine. I found it a bit over grilled, but other than that everything else was well prepared and tasty.

Service as a whole was pretty good. I was pleased with how easy going our server was with handling my girlfriend's food issues and easily had a dessert in mind as well. The only thing was that he never came back to confirm after saying he'd make sure all the changes he had in mind were good. The other thing that stuck out was that all the dishes pretty much just came out and were plopped down on our table. This certainly isn't a super expensive meal, but at the same time they are actively trying to bill themselves as a world class restaurant. The runners should know to introduce the dishes, especially in a multi-course menu where I've probably forgotten a lot of what was written about the dishes on the menu.

Minus some extremely minor service oddities, which were totally overshadowed by our friendly waiter and a waitress helping him out, it was an overall pretty good experience. Next time maybe we'll stop by for lunch to see what the view on the Ventana patio is all about.

While visiting Carmel, we drove down the beautiful California coast to have lunch at Ventana Inn in Big Sur. Looks like a great place to stay; peaceful and serene on the Pacific Coast cliffs. We sat outdoors for lunch with what would have been a breathtaking view, if not for the fog. Even though they were busy, we had several attentive waiters seeing to our every need. The food was delicious and the presentation clever. Our main waiter, Ethan, was just the right level of attentive without being annoying. The resort was impeccably clean. We will definitely return for more of this in the future.

After hiking the Andrew Molera Bluffs hike that afternoon, my husband and I treated ourselves to a wonderful cocktail and spectacular view at Ventana. Couldn't have been a better choice. The staff was very forthcoming in directing us to the lower deck where cocktails (no food) are served. Very relaxing, quiet after a long hike. Next time we will stay for dinner.

We had breakfast, lunch and 2 dinners here while we were staying in at the hotel Ventana Inn for 2 nights. The food is truly excellent - our best meal of our West of US trip altogether (including San Fran, Vegas, Yosemite, LA!). The only let down is the staff really - the reception staff as you arrive at the restaurant (apart from a lovely older lady) are quite rude and snobby. They seemed to have difficulties seating us both nights (even though we'd booked both nights for dinner...). We also really wanted to sit under the arbour (apparently 1st come 1st served) but that didn't happen. Once sat down though the waiters are very lovely, attentive and do the restaurant justice. Simply for the food this shouldn't be missed! The setting is also gorgeous and the heaters keep you toasty while sat outside - very romantic.

We ate dinner outside and had a great dinner. The menu has a nice selection and the service was excellent. The wine list is very good. I think it is a very good restaurant, but Sierra Mar across the street is better but also more expensive.
