Loved the location of the property and the amazing views - both from our room and the breakfast terrace. Saw lots of whales! Very retro so if you want all mod cons like flatscreen TV etc you are in the wrong place. Bathroom is quite frugal. When we arrived at dusk after a very long drive from LA on holiday weekend the Lodge was having a powercut so we checked in in the dark and also could not charge up any of our phones or cameras. Nor could we look at any info for the following day on the web as there was no wifi. By morning, however, power was back. We found it a little odd that the staff were not apologetic and we were not offered any kind of compensation at all (eg a glass of wine or some other token). After all, while this was clearly inconvenient and obviously stressful for them, it was also inconvenient for us. In any event, we were here for the amazing views, so we lived with it and did not let it bother us. And we would return for a longer stay. Restaurant is very good but takes last orders at 8.30 pm.

During the day the view outside our cabin was magnificent, and at night the sky was absolutely full of stars. Our cabin was a nice size, although the bathroom was a bit small but was perfectly adequate and to be expected of cabins built when these were. It was so peaceful to sleep with the fresh sea breeze coming in through the windows, with the sound of the waves washing up on the rocks at the foot of the cliff.

Room Tip: Try cabin 10 for the best view.

But in a very good way. Make sure to take advantage of all the grounds, including the tiny hike to the top of the hill, the chairs placed down below with table, to have a cocktail, and then enjoy the restaurant. The rooms are cozy, but not miniscule, room for stuff and to move around. But remember, most of all, enjoy the outside; it is fabulous.

Room Tip: The only rooms with NO VIEW are3,4, 5&6. 1,2 and 7-10, ocean view

Only stayed one night in Big Sur in only one hotel so I have no way to compare -do not know this area and every area has own customs- but to me the way the staff treats you is just an important as the room. In Lucia Lodge there was no such thing as helpful, extra nice or anything like that. They act like if they don't want you there. Maybe they don't? It is a secluded one of a kind incredibly beautiful spot that maybe makes people not want to share it with "outsiders" but...after a long drive and taking in the views on the way an average guest is on average expecting a bit more than curt brush-off answers to any questions and the only moment of real focus was when the credit card was used. So am giving it 4 stars despite the fact that the room and area are REALLY 5 stars.Would have given it 3 stars but cannot because the room was great. However the way we were treated ruined our mood a bit and we were there only one night for close to $300 and had no time to bring our wonderful mood back- it took hours it sort of took wind out of our sails for a while... Maybe if we stayed two nights but in this area one needs to book literally months in advance. So my advice is - stay at this place if you can-definately- the view and the area is heaven - has to be seen to be believed. But do not expect a warm welcome after a long drive and expect a different treatment you usually get in hotels. This place is off the grid so there is no internet or cellular (the place offers limited emails if necessary) but it only ads to the experience. The room is first class - very basic but with organic products in the bathroom , down cover on bed to die for (very expensive - the kind you find only in luxurious hotels) and view so spectacular it will be with you forever. Bring a camera.But...people book months in advance for this one night and bring their money and energy- would be nice to be greeted classy hotel style- with a warm smile.

Our cabin (#8) was one of the "front four," and the view out the window and from the chairs in front was spectacular. We lucked out on weather, clear mornings and all day in mid-August. The cabin is old, floors slope, bathroom is quite small but adequate (shower only), no TV, but WiFi worked fine, no cell reception on Big Sur coast. Very nice feature: comfortable queen bed with upscale comforter and pillows. Gas stove worked well for occasional heat. People at the Lodge were helpful, general store very expensive but handy, and we loved the restaurant (reviewed separately). An advantage of Lucia: it's near the underrated Limekiln State Park and the wonderful Sand Dollar Beach. Overall, it's five stars for the view and location at the price.

Room Tip: Cabins 7 through 10 are the expensive ones with Cliffside location, 1 through 4 have views over a sm...

We stayed one night in Cabin #9 at the Lucia Lodge on our way home from visiting Morro Bay and Hearst Castle. I really liked this place, it was perfect for one night. Loved hiking up the switch-back path to watch the sun set on their property.

The only issue I had was no coffee maker in the room, so it was an unhappy wait until 8:00 a.m. when they served coffee and breakfast in the restaurant. But the breakfast on their patio was really nice.

This place "is what it is", and it really was OK!
