This is all about the location and the view. Fog does roll in, but that can't be helped. When it burns off, you have a great view.

Rooms are clean and comfortable. A little dated, but not bad.

Bed was comfortable.

The price to quality ratio is about right. It is slightly per night than a typical hotel, but the location is amazing.

Restaurant was ok for both dinner and breakfast. Nothing special but not bad.

We stayed here in Dec 2012. We had high expectations but when we arrived for our 1 night on our road trip honeymoon the main lodge was shrouded in darkness. Our keys and an informal note (with no emergency phone no.) was taped to the door! We found our cabin, which although overall was cosy in appearance, was dirty and dusty. The small heater did not appear to work, so we were left in the cold without instructions or a number to call for assistance. In the morning we mentioned this to a member of staff in the shop but she didn't seem at all bothered! I definitely would not recommend as although the location is stunning the service and the cabins need a massive makeover! (or a new owner who cares about the standards of their accommodation and service).

.........Smack-dab in the middle of stunning Big Sur country, you will find this quaint throwback to the "Motor Inn" days of lodging with the history to prove it. It's been around since the early 1900's. With stunning views, comfortable accommodations, and a surprisingly innovative restaurant, it has all you need as a base to explore the beautiful surroundings that are within easy reach. It begins right outside your front door, and extends in all directions. The lodge staff is very helpful and attentive, and the accommodations, though rustic, are quite adequate. Peaceful and beautiful just begin to describe what you can experience at Lucia Lodge!

Room Tip: Try to book Cottage #10

My husband and I decided to pop into this random looking place for lunch and were shocked when we walked in. The restaurant has breathtaking views of the ocean! We were able to sit right next to the window and whale watch (yes they can see whales from their view point). I ordered their famous fish and chips- they are AMAZING. I would recommend them in a heart beat. My only negative would be they appeared to be short staffed (2 women) for a packed room of about 40 people. So getting our check took a little longer than I would have liked. I would recommend this place to anyone driving down the coastal highway.

Our stay at Lucia Lodge was maybe the best part of the whole trip.
The setting is gorgeous (right on the rim), there is a big choice of places to sit outside and enjoy the ocean views, the cabins are charming, cosy and equipped with everything you need, the beds large and soft.
Cabins 7-10 are the best located, but all 10 cabins are pretty inside and decorated with care.
Breakfast was good and abundant, varieties of pastries, muffins and cakes, yogurt, good coffee. What we loved about the restaurant was the classical music, real music (not the usual medley hotel lobby sound) and the huge windows which allowed us to even spot whales sprouting in the ocean during our breakfast.
Don't miss to sit outside at the entrance of the little shop and watch the different kind of tourists, travelers and locals who drive by and stop to buy drinks or use the restrooms, it's better than any play on stage, we had so much fun!
We'll keep the memory of this place deep in our hearts and hope it won't change until we can revisit.

There aren't words fabulous enough to describe this place - it is heaven on earth. The cabins are quaint, private and absolutely adorable. And the view... the view is priceless!! I stayed in cabin #10 - if you have the choice - this one is soooo worth it. It has a private seating area around the side of the cabin, as well as 2 lounging chairs in front. The view is spectacular and will take your breath away. The restaurant and store are just a few hundred feet up the road. The food at the restaurant was delicious and decadent. All of the staff was friendly and wonderful. I am so glad to have found this place... I can't wait to go back again!!

Room Tip: Cabin #10 is worth every penny - plus more!!

I need to first point out that expectations for this property must be very different from that of a Hyatt, Four Seasons, Fairmont etc... This is completely unique experience and therefore very difficult to draw comparisons in terms of 'bang for buck'.

Yes, you do pay a lot for what you get, yes the rooms need some work, but they are clean and the view is stunning.

I believe user "DonnTheHiker" stated it best in his rather thorough review. This is a place, a state of mind, a place to rest, a place to enjoy the history and culture of the Big Sur region.

Staff both at check in and the restaurant were friendly. The waitress at the restaurant had recently returned from a long vacation in Hawaii. I wish my wife and I had more time to chat with her because we had so many questions about Big Sur and her life growing up there. I'm from a small town myself so it's fun to draw parallels.

It is noted with the restaurant expansion/renovation that they are starting to update the property. It looked like they may also be clearing land for potentially more cottages? The lady who helped us check in said their business has started to boom now that they offer online booking. That should translate to money in their pockets which will certainly translate into improvements.

The area itself is void of cell reception. There is limited wifi, it worked fine for us. There is no in suite phone, tv, microwave, fridge etc... It's a comfortable bed, a table, and a wardrobe. The rooms were old but very clean. I believe this place dates back 100 years so that would explain a lot. The windows are single pane and there is no weather stripping so the in suite heater needed to be on all the time (this prevented my wife from getting a good sleep).

Yes, there are rooms with better views; however, the rooms that overlook the parking lot still have a stunning view of the ocean. Not a big deal to walk 30 feet from the room to the cliffside for a better view.

The restaurant was fantastic. The food excellent. A bit pricy; however, one must remember the remote location and cost for logistics.

Would we come back again? Probably. But not before trying out other towns such as Carmel or Monterey.

I truly wish we had more time to spend in Big Sur. Until next time!
