We live in London but travelled to seek out this elusive place having known the new owners Cathy and Paul for years, our first visit revealed a truly unique bar and restaurant setting. We were late on Sunday but had a warm welcome, great service and a great choice of well prepared food and a modest drink due to the drive. Good food, beer, and wine, lots of character and a lovely courtyard to sit in the sun. We were rather lucky with the weather but may be even better on a rainy day!? Accommodation not far away so we will be back to try some more soon.

We live locally and used to frequent the dark Horse quite a lot.unfortunately the previous owners ran it down with dreadful food and service that made Basil Fawlty look great.
The new owners have however turned it round completely.
The location of course is still great but with new tables and chairs and a general make over it's now fresh and spotlessly clean.
The food is excellent and freshly cooked. We had to wait a while but rather that than to be served up pre frozen everything.
The menu is varied and a good child's menu (not the obligatory fish fingers).
The prices were reasonable which means we will be back again soon.
We'll worth a visit

6 of us went for a meal at the Dark Horse yesterday (4th May 2014) . The location and way that the restaurant had been decorated was excellent. The staff were very friendly and attentive, the menu was varied and reasonably priced and the quality of the food was first class. I will definitely recommend and will certainly use again. Everyone in the group enjoyed all aspects of the meal and we all agreed that it was probably the most enjoyable dining experience we had ever had. Thank you all at the Dark Horse.

Food was very reasonable, well prepared and friendly. So convenient if staying on the estate. A kids menu proved a hit with our girls and there were high chairs available for the baby.

Revisiting after several years. New owners since March 2014 so dont confuse with reviews from 2012 or 2013. The building has been 'freshened up' and retains it quirkiness with pre & after dinner drinks in the former horse stable booths. Service friendly but.......the food and presentation was disappointing. My wife had the stuffed pork fillet which was tough for fillet. I had lamb which was okay. Vegetables were pre-served on the plate - not in a side dish.Even high street quick meals come with veggies served 'on the side' now. I had the apple & blackberry pie and ice cream - once again just plain on the plate. It lacked 'finish' which could have been easily achieved with a light icing sugar dusting and/or fruit sauce drizzled or a mint leaf. It was a bit basic cafeteria'ish in its presentation. The serviettes were paper!! Would have expected cloth napkin for the quality trying to be projected. The spare settings on the table were not cleared which is customary. We had a Groupon voucher but without that discount I certainly wouldnt have considered full price as justified. The new owner apparently previously managed a pub but obviously hadnt honed her skills in respect of being a restaurateur. Overall a disappointing visit lacking 'finish'. Plenty of good pubs do better that this.
ps; ladies the car park is very course gravel and will ruin your high heels!
