“Old but Good”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 July 2012

The Hotel Rica is situated on the hill above the town, about a 10 minute walk from the town center. We stayed overnight prior to boarding the southbound Hurtigruten Cruise. The local bus from the airport and to the Hurtigruten cruise stops at the hotel. This was the original tourist hotel in Kirkenes built in 1956 with a view over the town below. The room was clean and comfortable and even had a full size bath in the bathroom. We borrowed bikes and cycled around the lakeside pathways that are used for snow trails in the winter time. The hotel also had an excellent breakfast buffet so all in all it was old but a good. The hotel had only just re-opened for the summer season so the staff outnumbered guests when we were there.

My husband and I stayed here for just one night. We chose this hotel simply because of the free parking as the other Rica hotel in town had its car park full. The hotel facade is tired looking, in fact it looked more like an old hospital block than a hotel! Anyhow the room was adequate but terribly warm. Breakfast was the usual Rica standard with a good variety of hot and cold dishes. Overall we will stay here again if we were to travel on the Hurtigruten cruise from Kirkenes.

Room Tip: Ask for room not facing main street due to morning sun.

Location OK, but little uphill from city center. Were given rooms in adjacent buliding, which meant we had to go out and enter thru another door. Small parking lot. Rooms Ok, but not more. Toilet paper not refilled during 3 nts stay (no real need either) Towels not changed.
Reception staff accomodating. Lobby area OK. Breakfast OK, but all our mornings there were several bus travellers also, only two or three persons attending, which meant tables not cleaned quickly enough, food not refilled, coffee not refilled. I do not fancy grey lukewarm bacon. Dinner very good, though more expensive than at Surf&Turf Brasserie on main street.

We were put up in this hotel by Hurtigruten. Even though we only stayed one night, we used their lobby and internet for 48 hours. They seem to be a pick-up point for many activities--for airport buses, for snowhotel, for various tours. We stayed one night there, checked out, used their lobby for 3 hours waiting for snowhotel bus, left our luggage in their baggage room, and spent two hours the next morning in lobby waiting for airport bus. Their internet was available the entire time. They were cheerful and accomodating, even though we weren't technically their guests. For this reason, I have trouble talking about the negatives.

The smell of mold in the bath was so pervasive even a closed door couldn't stop it. It looks as if they have taken out a shower stall and put in a tub, with a gap between tub and floor. You can still see the large drain from what I am guessing was a shower. I would warn you against room 202 if you are mold allergic.

Food was very good. Breakfast was average for Northern Europe. Location isn't great--at least a 10 minute walk to center of town. However, since it seems to be the central meeting place for tours, I don't know that this matters, as there's certainly not much going on in the town of Kirkenes.

A 10-15 minute walk to the centre of town. Rooms are cozy, and the winning factor for the hotel is the great restaurant, probably the bets food served in the whole town.

King crab and monkfish are great ! Must try.

Smarting from the hammering the Australian dollar had taken, I booked an economy room at this hotel the night before taking a trip on the Hurtigruten coastal ferry.

The hotel is in an elevated position a pleasant 10 minutes' walk from the centre of town. It is located close to the Grenseland museum and has a nice outlook.

My room was very comfortable and clean, really the only "economy" things about it were (a) that it was not directly accessible from the main building - I had to walk a short distance across the car park, and (b) it had only a traditional keyed lock on the door (not a card key). The room had everything I needed, including free wi-fi and a mini-bar.

The main lobby/lounge was very comfortable, and the included breakfast was especially good - do-it-yourself waffles being a highlight.

I don't think there is any such thing as a cheap hotel in Norway, but relatively speaking I thought the Rica Hotel Kirkenes was great value.

We booked here for my birthday for 4 nights as it was somewhere I’d really wanted to go. The bus from the airport drops you off right outside (Just make sure the driver knows WHICH Rica hotel it is!! (There are 2). For one night we’d arranged an overnight trip to Murmansk during the trip, and when we asked the hotel if it was possible to ‘cancel’ that night’s booking and if they’d look after our un-needed luggage they couldn’t have been more helpful, and so we didn’t have to pay for an un-used night.

The restaurant was great, highly recommend the King Crab starter! Rooms were clean, comfortable and fine. Free internet access in the lobby, and free coffee/tea available in the bar all the time.

Breakfast was plentiful and tasty.

Whilst we were there, we met one lady who was stopping overnight after getting off the Hurtigruten. If you’re planning on doing the same, I would strongly suggest stopping on and seeing what Kirkenes has to offer. So much history in such a small town. The hotel is a short walk into the ‘centre’ of town, but buses are available.

Room – fine
Staff – always helpful
Restaurant - excellent

Things to see/do

Border museum, bombing bunker, statue to the Soviets, grave of the informers. And if there for more than 3 nights, you can arrange a trip over to Murmansk (Russia) with an agency in town. Arrange in good time, to get a Russian Visa.

  • Liked — Staff helpfulness
  • Disliked — Possibly 'too far' from centre. If I had to choose something...
