“Fantastic Safari Camp”
Reviewed 3 January 2006

We stayed here for three nights as part of our tour of India.

We arrived there in the evening having travelled all day from Varanasi. We were met by Lucy an english lady who was the manageress. From that moment on she always made sure you were a guest and not just profit.

We had a slideshow around a campfire given by the naturalist Hatsi, folowed by a freshly cooked dinner.

Early to bed as up at 05.30 to start the safari - game park opens at 06.00. We were lucky to have Hatsi in our jeep so tiger spotting was a plenty. Wonderful elephant rides to see the tigers close up. Breakfast back at the camp mid morning was fresh & hot just what you needed on those cold morning starts. Siesta time before lunch then off out on safari again at 15.00 until the game park closes.

The tents are luxuary and extremely comfortable. They are well sealed up as we did not see one insect or anything else in the tent. Hot water bottles are placed in the beds every night. The showers have hot water 24 hours a day. Clean towels, tents spotlessly cleaned everyday. We could not fault it

If you had any problem just tell Lucy and she would sort it out day or night.

I would thoroughly recomend Churhat Kothi to anyone wishing to see wildlife in India. Thank you Lucy, Hatsi & your team for the wonderful experience we had.

We have just returned from 3 weeks in India. Churhat Kothi is one of several hotels and guest houses at the Bandhavgarh National Park (reputed to be one of the best places to see tigers in India) in Madhya Pradesh. The accommodation is a series of luxury tents set in a pleasant natural grassy area with trees and bushes behind the main lodge. We were a little apprehensive about staying in "tents" at first, but they are really "rooms" with canvas sides and roof and have proper beds and furniture and are attached to your own private shower room with luxury sink and toilet (and this bit has proper walls). The food was extremely good. However, if you are on their version of "Jungle Plan" 2 jeep rides are included per day into the National Park, but beware that you are expected to take these on the day preceding the night you have paid for. Even our travel agent was un-aware of this. As the full tiger-spotting jeep rides leave Churhat Kothi at 6am and 3pm each day, it makes it virtually impossible to take a full morning drive on the day of arrival (unless you check in at 5am). On our first day our train was sheduled to arrive at 8:00am in Katni which is about a 2 hour drive from Tala, the village where Churhat Kothi is located. They then charged us US$30 per person (there were four of us) to take a jeep ride (as usual from 6:00am to 11:00am) on the morning of our departure. Also beware the price of alcoholic drinks which are much higher than we paid in the Oberoi Grand in Calcutta or the Taj Mahal Hotel in New Delhi. We had a great time, enjoyed the good home cooking and spotted two tigers during one of our jeep rides, but we left Churhat Kothi with the feeling that we had been taken for another sort of ride.
