“Right on the Beach”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 August 2014

Set right on a great sandy beach Nilaveli Beach Hotel was a great relaxing place to spend a few days on the beach as part of tour of Sri Lanka. Food and service are very good. The accommodation is spotlessly clean ... but the decor maybe starting to get a bit tired.

Room Tip: As close to the sea as possible

Stayed there during the month of august with family. Location is attractive and the staff is helpful. Couldnt beleive that they didnt offer a buffet for saturday lunch. And in the night you had a buffet without a single item of sea food. Being a beach hotel u should offer good seafood plates. At least fish. For the breakfast we had a good variety. Seems that the property is under utilised where there is good potential.

We stayed here for 2 nights on our 12 day LK tour after coming in from Habarana.

Some good things:-
Staff is well behaved. The large pool is great which can be fun for kids. There is a deep section of the pool and I must appreciate the life guard who acted quickly and helped saving a child who was under the 'care' of an unattentive sibling. The beach is very much part of the campus but the sea can appear a bit rough. Try to get some nice sunset pics. The beach facing dining area is great especially at night when a live band is playing. The a-la-carte options are quite good and one of the days it was Lobster night. You also have some squirrels who give company near the beach restaurant which can be quite entertaining.

The Bad (which needs fixing):

Main breakfast area has too many flies which is a major irritant. The breakfast spread appeared limited and can be improved .If compared with other 4-star hotels around Sri Lanka especially ones like Chaaya Village from where we had checked out the previous day. The staff appeared a bit overloaded as we saw the same guying at the reception and doubling as the bellboy. We were a bit unhappy at the pathway leading to the DELUXE rooms on the first floor as the place had the external look of staff accommodation rather than tourist rooms, especially due to the proximity to the high property wall boundaries. It did not really seem to be well planned. Our AC had some problems but it was fixed anyway by tech staff. The view from the first floor balcony is also not much. The location is also a bit far out, but again I dont think the hotel can do much about it. The WORST was lack of WIFI on the property which was quite surprising and an infrastructure failure.

The location is amazing. The rooms are unremarkable and, annoyingly, the standard rooms don't include safety deposit boxes. We stayed in two rooms and in both the bathrooms were not very nice and looked a bit dated/dirty in both cases. The food available at the bar was good but the menu is the same for lunch and dinner so this is quite limiting. The waiting staff are VERY slow and you need to be very careful with the charges because they presented us with receipts for stuff that we didn't have and although we refused to sign them when they were presented for this reason they still insisted on adding the charges to our bill at the end of our stay. The receipt system is very irritating as staff constantly bother you to sign receipts for lunch at dinner etc because they are never organised and this makes their slow service even slower and it is also pointless as they seem to bill you whether or not you sign the receipt. Wifi is only available in the lobby (at a daily cost) and it was broken for the duration of our stay. I think that it is unreasonable to charge for wifi when the use of it is restricted to the lobby.

This hotel is only worth staying at because of its location. The price is far too high for the quality of the hotel and standard of service. The staff are hapless and uncaring.

After a worst hotel stay experience ever in another hotel in trinco we drove direct to this place even without any reservation. Fortunately They had chelates for our family of four.specious room clean both rooms comfy beds.
great hotel, very clean, friendly staff, mouthwatering food, good selection of beverages at the bar if you want to sip a long drink relaxing in the evening .reasonable price. They would arrange a boat ride to famous pigeon island for a reasonable fee which we enjoyed immensely

Beautiful location in Nilaveli however, the hotel needs a makeover. Bathrooms are basic but clean and the rooms are spacious. The staff were friendly. Beach hut food was good. Swimming pool is a good size. Would definately go back. 10 minute boat ride to Pigeon Island which is a must for snorkelling!

We stayed for three nights as a break from our tour of Sri Lanka.

The room was number 15. Almost none of the rooms have a real sea view, as the buildings are located about 50 meters from the beach, with trees in between. The beautiful beach itself is about 30 meters wide.
We had a look at an upgrade room, which was less basic, but still no real view of the sea.

But we didn't come for the room, but for the beach and relaxation. And relax we did! Very nice beach area with a lot of beds and possibilities for shade.

The sea was nice and calm, ideal for swimming and cooling of. Swimming pool was also good.

Quality of food was good. We recommend eating lunch and dinner at the open beachside restaurant. One night we had barbecued lobster and prawns, very tasty.
Food oddity: the avocado and prawn wrap had the prawns still with their tails on them. Consequently you have to unwrap the wrap, fold it back again and struggle keeping it together. Free advice to the kitchen: remove the tails from the prawns.

A piece of advice to the hotel. The service at the beach restaurant is very, very slow. While it was not very busy, just a simple order of a bottle of whine and water came just in time for our meal. Very annoying.
The staff should focus on what they are doing and not do multiple tasks at the same time. Orders get delayed that way.

Nonetheless, all the staff was very friendly and courteous.

We went diving with the diving center located on the hotel grounds. Very friendly staff and affordable prices. The diving itself was not as beautiful as we expected, but two nice dives nonetheless. In between we went snorkeling and saw a couple of reef sharks.

The best stay of our holiday!
