“Always go the extra mile”
Reviewed 15 April 2012

All our unusual requests were always met with care and helpful solutions. Whether it was directions / special treats for us and the children / special touches that made us feel at home. A real home from home. Another guest there at the same time was on his 5th return and had just won guest of the year winning 8 nights accommodation for free. Nothing was too much trouble.

Room Tip: The cooler rooms are the Garden Cottage and the Klimt Room on the east in Summer.

My sister and I had booked a room in Nooitgedacht Guesthouse, about two months before our arrival in Cape Town. We also had to pay the full amount up front when booking, which the incurred extra costs as we paid from a UK account into a South African account.
When we got to the guesthouse, no one answered the door. We tried phoning, but there was no answer. As we were two young females alone in SA, our taxidriver refused to leave us there and stayed with us the whole time, until we could get hold of someone. He also took us to my friend’s mum’s house, however she wasn’t in. He then took us back to the guesthouse, and then we finally managed to get someone on the phone, and we could finally be let in. This was over an hour after we first arrived, so we tipped our driver R100 (the fare from the airport was R180). During this past hour we had also been making calls from our UK phones trying to get hold of someone who could let us in, or who knew where we could wait until we got hold of someone. No cheap calls, I tell you.
So when we get in there is a woman who puts us in ‘The Cottage’, a self-contained studio in the house. She didn’t know we were coming, she is just taking care of business while the owner is at a rave-party for a few days. She comes back shortly after and says she thinks she made a mistake, so we carry our baggage into the house into a twin room. However, shortly after that again, she thinks that was a mistake, and that we should in fact be in ‘The Cottage’. We start to settle in, come across a cockroach climbing over the bin, and a couple of hours later, the woman comes back and says that there has been a mix-up and that the couple who should be staying there have arrived. She asks us to pack our things quickly so that the couple can move in and so that she can take us over to where we are supposed to be staying. This turns out to be a completely different house a few minutes walk from there.
We pack our things and sit down and wait. As we had been travelling most of the day, we are quite exhausted, and want nothing more than to relax and go to sleep. After a while the woman comes back and says that we can stay the night where we are, as she can not get hold of the guy in charge of the house where we are supposed to be staying.
The next day she wakes us up with coffee, and asks us to pack so that she can get the place ready for the couple, whom she had put up in a hotel for the night. Meanwhile she has called us a cab to take us to the Waterfront, so spend a few hours there. During which time she brings our stuff over to the other house for us. When we get over to the other house, a few hours later, the landlord has literally just come back from being on holiday. The house is a mess. It’s dirty and messy, and there are no clean sheets or towels. The woman from the first guesthouse starts cleaning up and making the beds etc. But first she takes us back to the other house, so that we can lounge around the pool, until our room is ready. When we get back, she is just finishing up and, 25 hours after arriving, we can finally settle into our guesthouse.
On our last day, I phone the landlady of Nooitgedacht, who is now back from the rave, and explain that we don’t think is reasonable for us to pay full price for the first night. The woman actually has the nerve to say that she heard the other place was a mess, and since their ‘cottage’ was superior to the other house, we ‘should be excited to be accommodated there’, and she can not afford to refund us as she is a single mother, and they had to put up the other couple in a hotel etc.
More than I feel sorry for us, I feel sorry for the woman who was helping the landlady out. She had not been given any information, and had all this landing on her doorstep. She was very helpful, and tried to make it as smooth for us as possible. But all in all, my recommendation is to not go near Nooitgedacht Guesthouse.
