A good place to stay while on elective at nearby hospital. Vey friendly and accommodating staff, kitchen facilities, wifi etc. all reasonably priced. The only problem was the lack of heating/insulation-it was chilly in July! Cafes and supermarkets nearby, security escort service available

Room Tip: Rooms in the main house may have wifi

Spent 3 weeks here at the start of the summer and could not have loved it more. The staff are so welcoming and friendly and go out of their way to help you. The rooms are very comfortable and clean. Lots of interesting people coming and going.
I was working at Groote Schuur Hospital during my time there and the location is PERFECT for it. Literally a 5 minute walk. The surrounding area has plenty of restaurants and cafes and bars however it is slightly out of the way of central Capetown for other sightseeing. You can get a bus for very cheap or getting a taxi is never a bother.
Would really recommend this place for students or travellers wanting to spend more than a few days in Capetown.

I arrived in SA after a long long long journey probably like all of us do, so totally tired in CT and then it was so easy to made my way trough the new city (I´ve never been before) and finally I arrived here in the hostel! the welcoming was friendly and they just offered me to sit down and have lunch with them!! so I spend my first lunch with these great guys who are working there on a table and was listening to their stories! I´ll never forget this warmly welcoming!!! so I spent almost a week there. all around the area is safe, maybe not at the night time down the street where the restaurants are but its always on you and this area is full of tourists!! so all together it its safe no worries ;) the hostel is very clean! they offer very good food every day for dinner you just have to write your name down on a board an pay a little amount. they will help you to organize your day tours trough the city, and if you will climb up table mountain and see the sunrise, they have their own guide (best regards Nyasha ;) ) at all, this is the perfect place to stay and I visited a lot of hostels in my life on my journeys. this is a place where you will be an elephant or at least get green ;) I tried to come back before I left SA but it was fully booked those days.. :(

for pictures of this great place and more stories visit my blog on facebook "my life with my backpack"

enjoy your stay there!!!

I've never encountered such welcome, friendliness and sociable atmosphere as at the Green Elephant. Comfy beds, clean rooms (some ensuite), dozens of interesting people coming and going all the time, a cheerful helpful vibe and exceptionally accommodating staff, a simple bar with a blazing fire, cheap beer, a pool table and a great buzz, pizza night, laundry facilities and early check-in... I can't wait to return.

I had a fantastic experience at Green Elephant. I stayed at the backpacker before finding a longer-term accommodation, and was sad that I found one so quickly and had to leave! When I explained to Nyasha, the very cool hostel staff member, that I had found a place to stay and would be leaving a few days earlier than I had already booked, he was incredibly accommodating and did not charge me for the days that I wouldn't be there. I can't imagine this happening anywhere else. I was very impressed.
When I arrived at Green Elephant, my Mac wouldn't connect to the Internet. I couldn't figure out the problem myself, but when I talked to the owner, he let me set up with Ethernet in his office, and when his IT guy came later that evening, he sat down with me and completely fixed the problem. Again, it just goes to show that everyone there is willing to go out of their way to help their guests out. Thank you!

Room Tip: The upstairs rooms would probably be better just to be farther away from the doorbell noise.

I stayed for 2months in dorm and every staff is very friendly and they look like my family.
They welcome whoever visit here.
They have a hot shower which provided by solar power and they consider about saving energy and 3R movement(reuse, recycle, reduce)
I want to go back Capetown and I want to stay here.
I will go back!!
Thank you for everything!

This is a hostel with the most friendly staff you can ever ask for. The owner, Howard is just the nicest guy. I ended up renting the owner's flat. The Green Elephant is neat and offers a good price. Obs is a nice area to spend first few days in Cape Town. I highly recommend this hostel!
