“" A hidden gem with a magnetic attraction"”
Reviewed 27 February 2012

This was our second visit to Highlands and hopefully we will return many more times.
It is simply a lovely restful oasis where quality and care encompass the beautiful house and gardens, the pools, the food and the staff who work there. Carole and Jane along with their team make you feel very special, more like friends than guests, and nothing is too much trouble. The location is quiet while only being a 15 minute drive from The Waterfront down town or the winelands of Constantia or the beautiful Kirstenbosch Gardens.
Highlands is a true gem and the trouble is you just want to go back and back when there are so many other places in the world to visit; what a dilemma !!

There's lots of hyperbole on review sites like this, and I strive not to add to it, so when I say Highlands is a fabulous find I mean it.
Amid the increasingly brash and showy hotels and bars of Cape Town Highlands is an oasis of under-stated, old school luxury in the style of the great English country hotels.
And don't be put off by the phrase "old school" either. In this case it means a gorgeous colonial mansion in which guests meet over pre-dinner drinks in one of the courtyards or the bar as the sun sets; it means fabulous service and great food all delivered with genuine pride and warmth.
Highlands feels like staying at somebody's house - albeit a very grand house - and like such houses in a Wodehouse story guests meet, mingle and chat, exchanging stories and jokes, before they move through to eat on th terrace or the dining room. The place lends itself to that kind of atmosphere somehow.
The food is simply excellent. Traditional dishes, but created in contemporary styles with subtle African twists. I ate salmon one evening which ranks as one of the best fish dishes I've ever had.
Staff are informal, but ceaselessly attentive and helpful, adding to the country house weekend feel of the place. It really feels like staying with friends and they've through of numerous little touches to make life easier (such as teaming up with an excellent cab firm - you get the driver's number and he looks after you for your entire stay, with all his bills being added to your hotel bill, so you have no need to worry about having Rand with you to cover the journey).
The rooms are beautifully furnished, and well-equipped, and there is free wi-fi all over the property, including around both swimming pools.
Becuase it's a few miles from the city centre, in the exclusive suburb of Kenilworth, you are also untroubled by the shoals of sharks which circle the city hotels bothering tourists with offers of everything from cell-phones to religious salvation (or worse) - yet you're on the Waterfront by cab in 15 minutes.
Table Mountain is behind you, a stunning view, and immediately behind the hotel's beautiful grounds is a private school's cricket pitch which means, in the season, you can hear the thwack of leather on willow and the gentle applause from the pavilion. Lovely.
It's also not anywhere near as expensive as I expected, or it could probably get away with being. Lots of guests I met there were coming back for what is now an annual visit, and I can see why.
It's very obvious why Highlands is a five-star hotel in terms of the criteria used to mark these things, but it also has an x-factor which makes it very, very special and is on nobody's check list.
If you go to Cape Town and don't stay here, you're missing out. I'm delighted to have discovered it and I'll be back, a lot a hope.

This was our first trip to South Africa and Highlands was the perfect first stop on our Garden Route tour. The location is very quiet but the centre of Cape Town is just a short drive away. We can concur with all that has been written on previous excellent reviews of this establishment. Carole and all the staff went out of their way to cater for all our needs and to ensure that we had a memorable stay. Our room was spacious and very comfortable. Lovely gardens to relax in. Highly recommended by us.

We stayed for two nights in that beautiful country house which is located in a very safe and quiet area. You feel immediatly at home. The staff is very helpful and friendly. The location is perfect for doing tours to the penninsula as well to downtown or to the beaches. We will for sure book it again.

Having travelled the world for some 40 years I thought that perfection in hotels was impossible to find.
Highlands meets that criteria to the extent that one really doesn't want everyone to know about this little gem.
The hotel, rooms, gardens, pools, service, food and most importantly staff are of the very highest quality.
Carole, the owner, and Jane the manager run Highlands as a family, they and their team make guests feel cared for and special, a rare experience indeed these days.
We had a wonderful stay and will certainly return, hopefully for longer.

Annie, my wife, and I had a delightful stay at Highlands. The hotel has been so well designed with every attention paid to the smallest detail, which coupled with the welcome and service from the owner and staff ensured that we had a wonderful time. The location is away from the bustle of the city itself so it was an oasis of calm after exploring the local sights - table top mountain, vinyards, national parks and shopping trips. The restuarant served very good food, although when we were there it was quiet. The staff recommended all of the best restuarants and places to go in the area. Taxis were arranged, were on time and efficient. The garden room that we stayed is was a lovely suite with doors opening directly onto a beautifully kept garden. I don't usually write testimonials but we were so impressed that I thought ought to let some other people know about it.

I am used to travel and to spend a lot of my life time in hotels due to my profession - I am a consultant. However, I have never experienced such warm and personal hospitality as at Highlands. From the first moment on, you realize you are not an anonymous guest, you are somebody who are really welcome to come and to stay. If you would like, you will be introduced to other guests. If you do not, you can stay alone and enjoy quiet beautiful places which there are so many at Highlands. What a relief and lovely suprise to enjoy these tailor made service and hotel surroundings in our globalized and standardarzied world. What should I say? Initially I booked 2 weeks and extended to 4 weeks... And actually could stay even longer.
