“Good Hostel”
Reviewed 15 January 2013

We stayed as a young couple at Lighthouse Farm Lodge for one week. The hostel is situated in Pinelands area of Cape Town a short 10/15 minute train journey (around 5 short stops) from Cape Town central train station. The location was a nice change from the inner city. The views of the mountain were incredible. The Oude Molen Village is just over the railway station exit so good access to public transport. Trains are frequent and there is an up to date easy to read train timetable inside the hostel available for guests. It is advisable not to use the train in later evening so if you want to be in town it is advisable to take a taxi home. Otherwise if you have a car secure parking is avaiable at the accommodation in the back garden which is secured. The whole Ole Moulen Village is monitored by security guards and dogs which provides reassurance of safety. Wifi is available however an internet cafe and small shop are available within the complex which are both convenient - supplying snacks, drinks, airtime for South African simcards etc. We felt that the accommodation offered excellant value for money. The place was kept clean and the staff were a pleasure to meet and talk with. Laundry services are also available. There is a large fridge for all guests to share and convenient food storage compartments. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. A back garden area is available to enjoy also. There is a swimming pool area within the complex and land where locals play music and spend time in what appears to be community projects/work, which was good to see. The bathrooms are separated into male and female. They are very basic but clean. There were no problems with the female showers however the male shower may need some attention to help water drain better. We met nice people at this hostel and all of them were travellers. I felt that the owners were extremely helpful and flexible with our booking arrangements. Following the previous review on trip advisor for this hostel caused me some concern, however, my experience there exceeded my expectations and we enjoyed our stay. Thank you Helen and John.

Room Tip: There are 2 out of 3 functioning wings in the hostel. It used to be a building used for nursing acc...

When we first came in on the train, we were a bit nervous about having to ride it all of the time to go in and out of Cape Town from this hostel that was pretty far out in the suburbs. The owner was friendly enough and I have stayed on farm hostels before so, I was hoping it would be OK for the price. The place had the ambiance of a mental institution (which I think it had been at one time) the "double" we had reserved was single bunk beds. There were no nice communal areas, no real farm, the eco-village itself looked like a refuge for the homeless. We also learned that we were going to be living there with 20 young construction workers from Jo'berg that had already been there for the last 3 months. There was only one other woman staying there too. The guys went to bed at about 2am and got up again at about 5am, and we could hear everything! I didn't sleep more than those three hours. Bad sleep, bad ambiance, bad vibe and bad location.
