Owner description: The Churnet Valley Railway, is a picturesque heritage Steam Railway that runs through Staffordshire’s Little Switzerland, the Churnet Valley. It meanders alongside the Caldon Canal and the River Churnet for a delightful nostalgic 11 mile return journey. Kingsley & Froghall Station has ample parking and disabled access and is home to the award winning traditional Tea Room plus the railways Souvenir Shop, both of which are open on running days. Consall Station has no public road access making it very quiet and isolated in its situation beside the weir on River Churnet where the canal splits from the river. Nearby are the Lime Kilns and the Black Lion Public House. At Cheddleton Station you can visit the Railway’s Engine Sheds and its small Railway Artifacts Museum. Trains run most Sundays from February to October, and full weekends from Easter as well as Wednesdays from June to September. Additional services run on all Bank Holiday Mondays and school holidays.

One of many return visits for us to the CVR which we usually enjoy immensely, myself for the photographic opportunities and my husband, a steam railway enthusiast. This time, however, we were disappointed that at Cheddleton Station we were advised by one volunteer to go in the engine shed to see an engine being restored, but on getting there were told by another that we couldn't go in without a volunteer worker chaperone, we had no problems with the h&s issues, what irked was that no offer of assistance was offered, so, disappointed, we decided against purchasing train tickets and travelled by car instead to Froghall to await the arrival of the steam train and visited the excellent tea rooms!

My granddaughter and I went in 1940s dress, stayed for the weekend. It was just like stepping back in time. So much fun on the trains, the driver even let her blow the whistle. The staff were so friendly and helpful. All in all a excellent weekend. Thanks to all the staff....

Our visit now takes place with our 4 grandchildren at Easter time because the views are amazing not too many trees in leaf. Staff very kind and even allowed 6 yr old to operate dormant signal in the Consall Signall box which we had donated 30 yrs ago. Churnet Valley Railway have restored it since Blue Peters Simon Groom helped to move it .The cafe at Froghall Station serves amazing cakes! Where can you find a steam railway river canal and pub, would recommend Churnet Valley Railway to any family of any age !

We've visited the CVR a number of times now and every time we visit it is excellent. These people know exactly how to run preserved railways with excellently maintained locomotives, stock and stations. Each station is excellently cared for and you could easily be back in the 1950s on the line. We visited during the recent 1940s war weekend event (as last year's was excellent) and had a fantastic day out yet again.
Well done to everyone who works or volunteers at this railway. We hope you manage to reach your extensions very soon with the line as you thoroughly deserve it!
P.S. The ladies to run the railway's gift shop are so lovely and extra helpful!

A last minute decision to go to the Churnet Valley Railway on bank holiday Monday and very glad we did as it was well worth it. We were hauled by a steam locomotive from Cheddleton to Frogall and back. We did this twice as we had a rover ticket. Lovely tea room, friendly staff who were willing to talk to all even though they we probabally answering the same questions over again.
It cost us £9 as seniors and £11 for the full fare.
