Must have had great potential in the past, good structure and amazing garden space. Unfortunately except for the breakfast lady, nothing much exciting to tell about the place. Old and worn and not the freshest in cleanliness and smell. Cannot recommend this B&B to others.

Dear Valued Guest, Thank you for choosing The Thistlewood and sharing your experience on Trip Advisor.
In January 2012 our property was visited by an AA Inspector for our annual review, these visits to assess standards are unannounced and therefore unexpected, they can take place during any month of the year.
Here is a summary of the review: Thistlewood is a spacious and very well maintained property. Car parking and the garden create a positive first impression. This continues inside where the spacious hall and day rooms have lots of period features. The lounge/bar and dining room provide generous space and all areas are well furnished. New carpets and re-upholstered furnishings have ensured standards are maintained very well. Bedrooms and bathrooms are neatly presented and offer guests a good level of quality and comfort. The bedroom furniture particularly stands out with consistently good quality throughout and a convenient layout in each room. The complimentary wifi is an added benefit. Housekeeping is another strength with all areas showing good standards of cleanliness. Thistlewood continues to be correctly rated at Three Stars with a "Guest Accomodation" designator.
Please remember that The Thistlewood is a Victorian property with lots of wonderful, old original period features, unfortunately this is what appears to have been described as old and worn out.

I was there for one night, to see a football match at Manchester United FC.
It is not too far from the train station but it is a small station in a residential area so make sure you have a taxi company's phone number ready. I didn't have the number for a taxi so I walked there. It is a fair distance but walkable if you don't get lost like I did!

The room was very clean and decoration was decent.
The single room is small but has everything you need: tv, electric kettle, and hair dryer. Bed was comfortable and the quality of linen was also pretty good.

Was relatively close to the stadium and quite reasonably priced.
Took a taxi on the way to the match but walked back. I walked slow so it took me almost an hour but the weather was nice so didn't feel like a hard labour.

The property and the neighbourhood was quiet and I got to relax for the evening without an issue.
Breakfast was really tasty and staff are very friendly.
Definitely would recommend staying here.

Stayed at Thistlewood when going to football, easy to find and even though 45 mins walk to the ground this was via a good pub within 5 minutes and beat traffic afterwards. Staff friendly and very good value money in basic but more than adequate rooms with good food. Definitely recommend and will use again.

I stayed at the Thistlewood for two nights whilst in Manchester and heading back to London. For the price this place was great. Friendly staff, great breakfast with a few different choices, Kippers for example, if you have had your fair share of "full" breakfasts. Room was very clean although on the small side but hey, it was a single room.
I only have one issue, the water pressure in the shower in my room (8) was non existent. If it was not for this I would have rated higher and this was my only concern.

Room Tip: If you like a good hot strong shower in the morning avoid room 8

We had booked for a show at the Lowry Theatre in Salford Quays for our wedding anniversary & wanted to stay for 2 nights. Most hotels in Manchester city centre were very expensive but this hotel was exactly what we were looking for. Reasonable prices, very clean with good food. English breakfast was great but alternatives were available. We got held up in traffic on a Friday evening but when we rang we were told"no problem". Our room was on the front with big bay window which was lovely apart from some traffic noise but it didn't bother us. Taxi into Salford Quays was only £8. Perhaps not the hotel for 18-20 year olds but great for us. Fabulous weekend met some great people. Would definately recommend.

This is a large Victorian house, which once inside is remarkably quiet despite the busy road outside. The owner, who we only saw when we arrived, was friendly and showed us to our room, which was at the front with a very large bay window with a small seating area. The bathroom was compact but functional. The staff at breakfast were friendly and helpful, there was a good selection of cereals and a decent cooked breakfast. The dining room had a fantastic view of the wildlife in the garden. We chose the Thistlewood as we were spending the weekend watching cricket and it was in walking distance of Old Trafford Cricket Ground (40 mins). It was also reasonably priced for a weekend away.
