“A great stay even if you don’t care for golf”
Reviewed 12 June 2014

We stayed here (Apartment B10) from June 6, to June 9, 2014. (After our arrival we added one more night because we got a very good first impression of the apartment/resort). It was my wife’s birthday and we were presented with a free upgrade (from one bedroom to two), which was very nice because we used the spare one as a nursery for our 2 year old. On our arrival, there was also a complementary fruit basket, crackers, coffee and tea, which was also nice and helped to give that good first impression.
The apartment complex is located inside the large golf resort. It’s very well located for people that still want to enjoy the nearby beach (but the surf is aggressive and the beach has no lifeguard so its not advisable to go swimming alone in the ocean) It is reasonably close to the village centres and shops (you’ll have to take a car though).
There are several general amenities (even excluding the ones of the Marriott hotel also located in the resort) like a playground, a football field, a clubhouse with bar, lounge and restaurant, (with take away food – we ordered one night and it was very good even if a bit on the expensive side). Specifically, in the apartment complex, there is also an Italian Restaurant and a supermarket (well stocked) which is very handy since any others are some km outside the resort.
There are several swimming pools (with different locations, sizes and depths) and you can use any of them. Nevertheless, there is no internet wi-fi (only in the clubhouse) and if you want access you will have to rent a router for your apartment at extra cost.
We (3 adults and 1 baby) stayed in a large two bedroom apartment (with 2 baths) on the first floor. The apartment was very well cleaned on our arrival, and was equipped with all the house amenities (but no amenities that you might need for an infant, so if you don’t bring your one, the bed and tall chair will cost you extra). All bedding and towels are provided, except for beach/pool towels. The kitchen was very well equipped (dishwasher, full size refrigerator, washing machine, electric stove and oven, microwave, toaster and electric kettle). It also had most of the kitchen utensils and pans and even a hand blender. The 2 bedrooms were large and nicely decorated, one with two single beds, and the other with a large bed (suite), each one with plentiful space to store your things. Also, the living room was large with a Flat screen TV, DVD player and Stereo. The TV has a good variety of satellite channels, in all languages.
Relating to the checkout, the assigned checkout time is at 10H00 am, but on our arrival, because of the baby, we asked to leave later, and were told the next day that it might be possible to leave at 12H00 pm, which was very helpful to us.
In conclusion: This is a very good place to go on holiday with your family and small children. We stayed for just a few days, but got the sense of really relaxing.

Room Tip: Apartment B10 is very well located with a good sun exposure and an excellent view of the beach and t...

Stayed at Praia Del Rey for 7 nights with family and friends in a 4 bedroom townhouse near the beach (but not one of the beachfront houses mentioned). House was modern, spacious and had everything we needed.
As others have mentioned, the resort is very large and has 3 key areas in my opinion. The Marriott Hotel, The Golf Clubhouse and the Beach Front area - where we were located. This area had a lovely Italian Restaurant - Great food and Service. Small shop for basics also located here.
The Clubhouse was also very nice in terms of food and service. Hotel has a nice pool area but we were disappointed with the lunchtime food served here.
I'd say the main point to note for families heading to this resort is the fact that these 3 areas are spread out from oneanother. Walking from Beachfront area to clubhouse took us 30+ mins with buggy and then another 15+ mins to Hotel. You can of course drive between the area and the roads around the resort and houses are all in good order. Reception staff also very helpful and should get a mention.
The resort is well kept and the surrounding area is very picturesque. Obidos was 20+ mins away in the car and nice place for anyone looking for some history and traditional shops.

Our room overall was fantastic. Plenty of space, full kitchen and amazing terrace. All three rooms and terrace had a view of the ocean - fantastic!
However, we had to pay extra (very expensive) money for a baby bed and chair, when normally this is free for a 5 star resort...
Based on the fact the resort was located 20-25 minutes from any kind of super market or city, we expected their local shop to have some decent supplies, but that was not the case.
There are onsite restaurants, but for a family they were mega expensive. The only one, and the best one (actually it was very good) was Argento.
We ordered food from the clubhouse one night, with expectations we would get real food for the prices (10-15euro each) instead they prepared frozen food!!! How cheap is that? Needless to say they got us there!
Lastly, to use the fitness center for one day (located at the hotel onsite), they expected us to pay 15euro. Why was it not included for everyone, but only visitors of the hotel? I have to image we paid the same amount of money...
We really would like to recommend this place, but they nickel and dimed everyone, and come across as cheap and petty, a real shame for such a wonderful location and complex...

Let me begin with the positives. The staff in reception and all of the restaurants and shops are really friendly and helpful - excellent English and all problems we raised were resolved quickly.
We liked the atmosphere and food in the Clubhouse and Argenta restaurants. we had a 4 bedroom villa which was spacious and well laid out in the event of heat. Our weather was poor - 3 sunny days out of 10. The rest were grey which is probably why this area is known as the Silver Coast.
The negatives - flies and ants invade at every opportunity. Building and gardening work seems to be going on constantly and the gardening seemed hilarious to watch at times with so few doing so little and so badly. They start at 8am which seemed early in a holiday resort.
The villa was a real disappointment in terms of luxury - the furniture was all really uncomfortable. The fridge freezer seemed ancient with paint bubbling on the door. The villa we were offered was nothing like the one on the James Villas website which had a lawn area.
We got a welcome pack but why you need to buy salt, washing up liquid and cloths, dishwasher tablets was a bit odd. There was also no portable barbecue which should have been present.

Room Tip: Ask them to show you the actual villa you will be staying in rather than a glossy picture of a villa...

We stayed in the 3 bedroom beachfront townhouse (B02 & B07) for six nights. The first one we stay in (B02) had an overpowering sewage gas smell in the master bedroom. It was so bad we couldn't use the bedroom or ensuite. We complained about it immediately and were given one excuse after another from the reception staff. They told us that it was due to the way the wind was blowing and that we should wait a few days! When the smell didn't go away they eventually (after much complaining) offered us another villa that was nowhere near the standard of the beachfront houses. We were shocked at the way we were treated. No offer of a discount. The manageress was very unsympathetic and hardfaced - she couldn't careless about our holiday. We found out that the beachfront houses on both sides were available - but still the manager did not offer us one of these. It was only when we got our holiday agent in England involved that eventually we were offered another beachfront house. The most shocking thing was that once we moved into B07 other holiday makers moved into B02 the very next day - with the sewage gas problem unresolved! On the plus side the houses have great views of the sea and are very comfortable. If you are lucky enough to have no problems while you holiday here then I'm sure you'll enjoy your stay. But if you have a problem - don't expect it to be sorted out. Our whole experience was let down by poor management. Think twice about booking your holiday here - there are much better options available.

Room Tip: Don't get B02. There is a sewage problem and the staff know about it but still offer it to guest...

The Praia d'el Rey is a (very) large resort built around a golf course of which the Marriot hotel is one accomodation option. Most of the resort consists of villas and apartments which are run seperately to the hotel. We spent a week in an apartment on a promotional offer and cannot fault the accomodation as it was very good: spacious and with all required facilities including a washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, satellite tv etc.

Location wise it is a short walk to the beach which is large and clean but this part of the coast is very wild and windy - the sea is not really suitable for young children. The holiday apartments are largely located at the far end of the resort and a served by a small shop (ok for essentials but not cheap and a bar/restaurant). It is a long walk to other parts of the resort such as the hotel, clubhouse or activity centre.

It is a good 10-15 minute drive from the resort itself to any sizeable town or village with very little in between. The resort reception staff were very helpful in explaining where to go for what and I would recommend Peniche for supermarket shopping and Baleal for a good beach and calmer seas (although still popular with surfers) both of which are an easy drive away.

You definately need a car to get around but assuming you have one then it is a 20 minute drive to Obidos which is well worth a visit. For access to the lagoon take the back way out of the resort (not well signposted) as this leads to the south side of the lagoon with nice beaches and perfect paddling conditions for little ones.

Overall the accomodation is good but there is not a lot at the resort and it is a bit remote. However there are some great sights within an hour's drive. For a more beach focussed holiday then the beach itself is good but the sea is rough and there are no facilities. Much better options are Baleal, the lagoon or half an hour up the coast there is a great spot called Sao Martinho de Porto with a lovely sheltered bay, sufficient shops and restaurants and family friendly facilities.

Unless you have come to play golf I would probably look to stay at one of the other locations I've mentioned.

First the good points faultless apartments with everything you could ever need but you are not part of the Marriott complex we were a good 35 minute walk from hotel. The Beachfront bar shuts at 8pm and the on site shop is small and expensive . The beach is beautiful but we were were there 7 days and the red flag was up for 6 days . We were there with friends so our teenagers had each other but they were bored as you can not walk any where. I do feel that the website gives you a true indication of what you are buying in to. The place is fab for families with small children and couples. It's totally uncommercialised and very quiet but there is nothing there. You need to drive every where and there are some beautiful places like Obidos but no restaurants or bars other than the Marriott
