Visit this area often. Now there is bike hire we will be using on our next visit. Possible to walk in two directions, one towards Malpas and beyond, as far as you like on to Cwmbran and further. The other direction towards Risca and on to the Cwmcarn Scenic Park. The actual Canal is very overgrown as nature has reclaimed it, and it would be a massive project to get it operative again. Realistically it will probably only remain as it is now. That said, it is such a beautiful area to walk, and the views of the countryside are stunning, especially at this time of year. It is interesting to look at the contrast of how goods were moved years ago, and now on the busy motorway which skirts the canal in places.
Care is needed as there are the deep locks, but staying on the towpath presents no danger to man or beast, common sense needed and the locks are not 200ft deep but more like 14ft!
Lots of cyclists using the path as would be expected, but mostly careful and bells rung to warn walkers, and a cheery, hello and thank you.
A nice pub just over the road from the path on the Risca direction called the Rising Sun, was a nice stop off for a refreshing drink. Cafe at the site, which we haven't used yet. Friendly mini market shop if you need anything.
Well worth a visit if you want a pleasant walk, doesn't cost anything to park, picnic by the lake, a lovely place to visit. Glad there are places like this left where it is possible to enjoy a few hours without spending much money. A nice way to educate children about the Canal system that operated years ago.
