“Yet another brilliant family holiday”
Reviewed 26 August 2014

This was our second year staying at Haddon Grove and it did not disappoint! Great family holiday location and really friendly staff greeting on arrival. The swimming pool and games room are a real bonus and the biscuits, tea and milk ready for you on arrival are a lovely touch. Thanks for another brilliant week!

Thank you for your review - great to welcome you back to Haddon Grove Farm. You are the only group who has taken the whole site for a week in the summer, quite a challenge to accommodate over 50 people, so fantastic that you were keen to repeat the experience!

We are well set up for groups of all sizes with several cottages specifically designated for groups with space to sit up to 25 people together - giving the option of communal living as well as separate cottages for some personal space and downtime.

Our indoor heated pool is very popular all the year round and is a great place to relax after a hard day enjoying all the Peak District has to offer.

I hope that we can welcome you back to Haddon Grove Farm very soon.

Wonderful, quiet location (the traffic is relatively light on the main road). Proprietors tried valiantly to be on hand to help with anything. Amenities functioned and were well-maintained. We stayed a week, and not during vacation, so we were often alone and enjoyed the quiet.

This stay was part of a longer 25th anniversary jaunt through Yorkshire, Derbyshire, and North Wales, and it did not disappoint in any way. We were in Blackbird Cottage, and enjoyed the everything about it (except one very large spider that startled us both).

The only thing to be mindful of is that it is a long walk from Bakewell, and if you are unaccustomed to the schedule of English village life, you might miss out on a dinner or grocery shopping. Luckily, there is a large grocery store that is open late, and a number of pubs that serve food well into the evening. My wife and I had some wonderful, quiet dinners that we prepared at the property, which was enjoyable for the peace, solitude, and quality of the room.

Overall, very pleasant, relaxing, congenial, and picturesque.

Room Tip: Upstairs and further away from the road, but try to get close to the pool-house, as you will be able...

Thank you for your review, I am very pleased you enjoyed your stay at Haddon Grove Farm last year.

We are very well-situated right in the heart of the Peak District, a couple of miles from Bakewell. There is excellent walking from the front gate, such as Lathkill Dale which is a national nature reserve and has wild orchids in June.

There are half a dozen great pubs within a 2 mile radius of the farm all family and pet-friendly and serving food. However, we would recommend having use of a car whilst staying with us as public transport is limited outside of the main areas and buses only pass the farm a couple of times per day in each direction. There are a number of local taxi firms and bicycle hire companies as an alternative.

Blackbird is one of our most popular cottages and gets lots of positive feedback. We have just upgraded the bed with a luxury memory pocket-sprung mattress, so the rest and relaxation can only get better!

Thank you again for your helpful comments, I hope that we can welcome you back to Haddon Grove Farm very soon.

First of all I should say I understand why people have given these cottages a very good review and why they have won awards. The whole site is extremely well maintained and the cottages in top order and well equipped. We only had to mention we had found a tap stiff to turn off and it was sorted by the next day. The beds are also very comfortable, although the double beds are only standard width. We were also lucky to get Wi-Fi reception in the room, as it was close to the leisure centre, although mobile reception is only possible at some outside locations. Our issues are specific to us, although might be experienced by similar couples, and with the Percival ground floor Cottage specifically. You can hear every noise from people upstairs and we were unlucky enough to have a couple with a teething baby which kept waking us in the night. There was also a smell of damp in the cottage which was particularly noticeable on return to it, and things like towels never dried. The dog rules for the site are not very practical or friendly. Basically the rule is don't let your dog relieve itself anywhere! Try telling that to a dog. You are expected to walk down a dangerous high speed B-road and get it to do its business in a field, which is great for last thing at night in the dark. It would better to have a no dogs policy. We also didn't feel comfortable enough to use the small pool, due to the numbers of teenagers and young children in it even though it was still school time. In summary, probably a great complex for families but not for couples and a dog.

Room Tip: Don't book Percival if you are a light sleeper.

Thank you for your review and for feedback about your stay at Haddon Grove Farm. We have worked hard to upgrade and renovate all the cottages with new kitchens, bathrooms, furniture, central heating and new carpeting or solid wood flooring throughout. We also seek comments and feedback from our guests as we have had many good suggestions over the years which we have put into practise.

I am sorry that you weren't able to share your comments during your stay when we might have been able to address things for you as we always try to respond as soon as possible (as with repairing the stiff tap).

We welcome a wide range of guests all the year round, with a particular focus on families, groups and get-togethers. The summer period is always popular with most cottages fully-booked. By definition, a cottage complex will have more people around than a single cottage on its own, but we don't generally find that this is a problem for our guests. I am sorry that you were disturbed in the night by the guests in the cottage above. This is the only place on site where there is an upstairs and downstairs in different cottages. We do make this clear on our website and we have installed thick sound-proofing between the floor of one and the ceiling of the other. Unfortunately, we can't completely sound-proof the cottages. We are very sorry that on this occasion you were disturbed by other guests.

The cottages are stone built with thick walls, double glazed windows and insulated front doors which makes them cool in summer and cosy in winter. The central heating is not generally on during the summer (although it is available), so wet clothes won't dry easily inside without assistance. Each cottage has an airing cupboard where the hot water tank is situated where clothes can dry. The courtyard is south facing and sunny (as it was all week during your stay) and other guests made use of the drying racks provided to dry clothes and swimming things outside. Alternatively, there is a commercial sized tumble drier in the laundry and drying racks in the leisure centre where the pool dehumidifier makes for speedy drying. We air the cottage thoroughly between guests, but the windows need to be opened regularly to ensure the warm moist air generated by people doesn't build up.

I am sorry that there was some confusion about our policy on pets. We have lots of dogs (and sometimes other pets) staying at Haddon Grove Farm. We have some of the grounds as garden with seating and a children's play area and we ask owners not to let their pets foul in these areas. We also have a 1.5 acre field at the back of the site (which doesn't require leaving the farm at all) which is enclosed and available for pets to run around in and to use for their ablutions. Again, because there are often children around, we ask that dogs are kept on the lead in the main gardens to prevent any difficulties. They are welcome to run free in the field. The site is well-lit at night, so there shouldn't be any problems after dark. It seems as if these guests have been using other fields nearby but not ours!

Our newly-refurbished indoor heated pool (9m x 4.5m) is a good size for swimming. It is very popular all the year round, but is not occupied for much of the day. Even during school holidays when we are full and have lots of families, everyone seems to be able to find a time convenient for them when they can have the pool to themselves. Most people are out and about during the day enjoying all the Peak District has on offer so this can be a great time to swim. Often, the site is completely empty for much of the day. When families are away together, they tend to swim together, so the pool is busy then.

Once again, thank you for your feedback and my apologies that your stay wasn't completely to your satisfaction.

Just spent 4 days in blue john farm house. It was a perfect rewind for me,my mum, 4 sisters and auntie. We made full use of the indoor heated swimming pool after a long walk. The surrounding area was beautiful and perfect for walking. I would recommend these cottages to anyone.

We stayed at Monsal cottage 11-18th April this year and had a lovely week. Our two sons (aged 10 & 7) really loved the swimming pool and the games room. The whole family took advantage of the DVD lending library and as adults we appreciated the vast array of maps and local guide books to look at in the games room. It's only 5 mins drive out of Bakewell and very near to the beautiful Lathkill Dale walk.... The cottage was cosy too and picked up the wifi from the games room, which was a real bonus for us. We will be back for certain!

Our stay over the Easter weekend was fantastic. The place was perfect for us - cosy, clean and with great on-site facilities. The location was perfect for doing the Bakewell-Chatsworth walk and a short drive to Edale for a hike up Kinder Scout. After a long day on your feet there's nothing quite like a dip in a warm swimming pool and then crashing on the sofa. Lovely countryside, too.

Room Tip: The farm cottage complex is very well laid out so just pick the right size cottage for you.
