This a very unusual First World War Memorial in the centre of the estate village of Sledmere. Sir Tatton Sykes formed a Battalion of waggoners from his estate staff and other locals to serve in France in support of the front line. He commissioned the memorial to commemorate all those staff who served in France.

A very unusual monument which commemorates the 1,000 men of the Waggoners Reserve raised by Sir Mark Sykes Bt of Sledmere House, in support of World War 1. It is located on the main road through Sledmere Village, near to the Eleanor Cross. It depicts the history of the Reserve from recruitment from the local farms to their action in France. Some of the images are pretty gruesome and have caused controversy but do reflect the attitude in Britain towards the enemy at that time. The Waggoners Museum, which is located nearby in the entrance courtyard to Sledmere House, is open from Sunday 6th April 2014 but is not open every day so check on their website. There is no entrance fee.
