“Best place in Costa Rica for natur lovers and environmentalists”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 September 2011

Although i spent there only one full day, I was amazed of the positive vibrations I received from the people and the nature. I will go back for health reasons in November and will stay 3 weeks. Dr German and Dana were very helpful and I am looking forward seeing them again. If the Dr cannot cure me then the nature will. Already feel very good about it.

Durika was one of our most amazing experiences during our Costa Rica round trip. There is no comfort at all but you can feel the silence of this place. We stayed for 3 days at the "honeymoon cabin" - very simple, with cold water in the small private bathroom only. You get very nice vegetarian meals together with all other guests. If you want there are guides included in the price, all of them knows so much about the environment. Ask for Eugenio who knows Costa Rican birds as no one else we met! The community of Durika planted one million trees around the reserve and their enthusiasm can infect the visitors very easily! More you can read at our homepage "wehr-reinhold.com".

We decided to visit Durika as we wanted something a bit off the beaten track. We were also lured by the vegetarian food as we are vegetarians ourselves. The trip to the reserve is interesting - an hour in a four wheel drive uphill from the hot lowlands to cool cloud forests. Come prepeared with woolies! The accommodation is basic - clean twin/family rooms but no hot showers. We found this a pain as the temperture outside was cool and we would have appreciated hot water.

The reserve allocates you one of its residents to organise a programme of activites for you during your stay. We did a couple of nature walks, observed cheese making and shepherded the goats. Our children age 9 + 10 really loved the goats and spent several hours out on the hills with them.

The whole reserve is involved in 'good work' - reforestation, preserving local indian culture, alternative medicines and alternative energy which is interesting and commendable to see. The residents are all highly educated and clearly passionate about their mission to preserve this corner of costa rica and spread their message to the wider community.

If there was a down side to our stay (other than the showers) it was the food. We found the food quite limited - virtually vegan and not a lot of it. We were dying for a bit of 'rubbish' by the time we left!

In all it was an interesting experience for a couple of days though we wouldn't have stayed longer.

  • Liked — mountain views were spectacular
  • Disliked — cold showers and small portions of vegan food
  • Tips/Secrets — 2-3 days is plenty to get a feel of the place
